Key points
â?¢ UK cocaine use approaching US levels as cocaine-deaths increase eightfold
â?¢ Amount of cocaine used overtakes ecstasy and speed among drug users
â?¢ 6.8% of Britons admit to cocaine use; 38 people died in Scotland last year

Key quote
"We have seen a marked increase in cocaine, especially crack cocaine, over the last four years to the extent that a number of bars and clubs are spraying WD40 on their cisterns to stop people using them to snort the drug" - Peter Anderson, Streetwork UK support team manager

Story in full BRITONS are the biggest cocaine users in Europe and are increasingly likely to die from it, the European drugs agency reported yesterday.

The class A substance is fast becoming the drug of choice for Britain's youth and its use is approaching levels found in the United States.

Its easy accessibility has resulted in an eight-fold increase in cocaine deaths in the UK between 1993 and 2001. Mentions of cocaine on death certificates in Britain rose from 85 in 2000 to 171 in 2002.

According to figures released by the Registrar General for Scotland, there were 38 deaths as a result of cocaine last year, up significantly on recent years.

About nine million European adults said they had used cocaine, but that figure hides large regional variations. Britain is top of the league, with 6.8 per cent of adults admitting they had tried cocaine. In Spain, the figure was 4.9 per cent; in Italy, 4.6 per cent.

The UK also had the highest proportion of cocaine users in the 15 to 34 age group - 11.6 per cent compared with 7.7 per cent in Spain.

The annual report of the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) said cocaine had become a "major element" in the European drugs scene, and cocaine-related death was a "serious and possibly under- reported problem".

The drug, which has overtaken ecstasy and speed among users, plays a role in an estimated 10 per cent of all drug deaths and could be responsible for several hundred deaths a year across the European Union, EMCDDA researchers said.

"Cocaine-related death is a serious and possibly increasing problem. In the few countries where trends can be estimated, they tend to show an increase," a spokesman said.

"These estimates now approach US figures, fuelling worries that cocaine is establishing itself as the stimulant drug of choice for many young people in parts of Europe."

The findings came as no surprise to drug workers in Scotland, who said their work with a largely transient group moving between major cities meant they spotted changes in drug trends ahead of official reports.

"We have seen a marked increase in cocaine, especially crack cocaine, over the last four years to the extent that a number of bars and clubs are spraying WD40 on their cisterns to stop people using them to snort the drug," said Peter Anderson, support team manager of Streetwork UK, an Edinburgh project which takes counselling on to the streets.

"There is easy accessibility and it is a very lucrative market for making easy money."

A spokesman for the Scottish Executive said: "Cocaine has a completely misplaced reputation as a glamour drug. But cocaine can destroy lives - that's why we are running an ad campaign about the dangers. We want people to make positive lifestyle options."

Coke is way too glamourised, like all the celebrities that are able to openly talk about using it all the time, and no one cares, no police enquiries, whereas, if I told the papers about me using coke, and spending hundreds on it every day (if they'd even print my story), I bet my house would be raided within a week!

Take that, Britons! Italy, cocaine capital of the world... And this is true, I go Italy often, and EVERYONE I know has done at least a line at least once...

Italian river 'full of cocaine'

The results suggested cocaine was in regular use in the areas tested
Scientists have found large quantities of a cocaine by-product in a river in northern Italy - suggesting consumption is much higher than previously thought.
The River Po was found to be carrying the equivalent of nearly 4kg (8.8lb) of cocaine daily. The Po Valley is home to about five million people.

The study estimated daily consumption to be about 27 doses (100mg or 0.004oz each) per 1,000 young adults.

The study was published by the web journal Environmental Health.

The chemical tested - benzoylecgonine (BE) - had arrived via the sewage system from the urine of drug users. A by-product of cocaine metabolism, it cannot be produced by other means.

The estimated daily consumption "greatly exceeds official national figures," the report says.

'Staggering' figures

The team says the test has to be refined before being applied on a vast scale.

The team, led by Dr Ettore Zuccato from the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research in Milan, said they were taken aback by their findings, whose economic impact they described as "staggering".

"The large amount of cocaine (at least 1,500 kg/3,307lb) that our findings suggest are consumed per year in the River Po basin would amount... to about $150m (£84m) in street value," the scientists wrote in the journal.

They said the figure of 4kg of cocaine equivalent carried by the Po daily indicated about 40,000 doses of cocaine per day for the region.

But official estimates indicated only about 15,000 doses per month for young adults in the region.

The team hope that in the near future, they will be able to develop similar tests in order to assess the true number of cannabis and heroin users.

I like the end of the article too... they want to find a similar text for weed... I'm sure if they ever did that text, they'd have almost no choice but to de-criminalize weed when they realize exactly how many people actually smoke :stoned:

Is it just me or does 171 people seem like not that many out of 6.8% of a population of over 60 million?
That would be over 4 million users, and those are just the people admitting to it.

There's not 60 million people in England...oh, my god, Imagine that. That'd be like New York City. Or is there 60 million people in England? Does that include standing room?

Just in case Shan Ross sees this, I titled it.

Cocaine is shit, it's expensive, associated with complete wankers and it doesn't even do all that much! You're paying purely not to have a comedown.

MDMA kicks coke's colombian arse, MDMA is the shit. I'm getting another gram this weekend...

MDMA? what do you think that is any better than coke? MDMA is strictly synthetic and even more addictive than coke. Whatever, not my life.

I'll be keeping it natural.

blastfast
11-28-2005, 01:07 AM
Don't be silly. MDMA is proven to not be physically addictive, it's more a scenario-drug than anything, like raves/parties etc. Coke can be used all day every day, you could do a 9-5 on it...coke is seriously addictive, much more so than MDMA.

However, this isn't the point. I was merely commenting on the 'buzz'.

Yup, MDMA is a great deal better than coke in terms of both the psychological and physical effects. The fact that it is synthetic means very little, except that it was synthesized.
