I AM USING CFL'S FOR MY VEG AND HPS FOR MY FLOWER. AND REALLY SEE THE SAVINGS IN MY POWER BILL. ONLY WENT UP $20 VERSUS $45 USING MH AND HPS. HOPE THAT HELPS.

Hps will strech the plants, because it can't get that close to the plants..!:(

So, use a few CFL's.. They are good for veg, but not that great for flower...!:) You need red spectrum for the flowering period..!:)

Hope that helped a bit!:D

PUFF, I CAN GET MY HPS WITHIN 6" OF THE TOPS OF MY PLANTS. AS YOU CAN SEE, I HAVE A FAN BLOWING DIRECTLY ON THE LIGHT AND ACROSS THE CANOPY. TEMPS REMAIN A CONSTANT 65/75 DEGREES. I HAVE A CERAMIC HEATER AS A BACK UP, (BECAUSE OUR NIGHTS HERE ARE ALREADY IN THE TEENS). MY CFL'S ARE ONLY USED AT THIS TIME IN MY VEG ROOM.

26/100 WATT CFL'S. MY LITE BOARD HAS 9 LIGHTS ON IT, IN A 2.5x2.5x6' ROOM

Metal halide is best for plants in their vegitative state and high pressure sodium is best for plants in their flowering stages but if you can only afford one go ith a conversion bulb or a Eye Hortilux Bulb which is a HPS bulb but with added blue and green spectrum
