hello, all Im thinking about starting to grow my own, and would need help from all you experienced folk.
If I put a dual spectrum 125w light, in wardrobe, for five plants, what type of fan would I need, also there is gaps in wardrobe doors, for dark period, how can I cover it up withouth doing any structural work, would a black sheet pinned over door help?
Tomatoes, no one ever said they were easy i spoze. :)

how big is this wardrobe? for HID lighting the rule of thumb is 50w per square foot.. .even more for flouro... i assume that is a 125w evl or other type of fluoro??
depends on how big the gaps are... you might be able to use weather strip effectively if they are small
a single 125w is no good for 5 plants.. id say 2 maximum... you can start 5 and keep only the best looking females.. but to finish all 5 plants you wouldnt get squat for yeild... you would be much better to stick with fewer plants
ventilation depends on the type of light you have, how much heat you have to exhaust, and the method of odor control... you have to do some work on the wardrobe in order to have proper air intake and exhaust.. recirculating the air inside the box isn't going to cut it, plants need fresh air just like you and me... if you use a carbon scrubber to control odor, then you need a stronger fan, etc
i grow with all fluoro and i use 3 computer case fans - 1 intake, 1 exhaust, and 1 inside for 'wind' ... i can get away with these weaker fans because i use an ozone generator for odor control, so there isn't any extra load on the fans (like pushing air through a carbon filter would create - requiring a stronger fan)

thanks for your repsonse. its appreciated. I think this is going to be more difficult than I thought. The gaps in the wardrobe are when you close the two doors, they dont quite eet in middle. As for the fresh air I was kind of relying on the gaps .The wardrobe is about 31/2 ft wide,by two ft deep.
I have children, so I didnt want to do too much damage to wardrobe doors, if you know what I mean.
thanks anyways,

well you can cover the front of the wardrobe if you prefer... but it has to be lightproof
and you can cut holes to install ventilation fans on the rear side, and just leave it an inch or 2 out from the wall to allow airflow... if your gonna use all flor, heat wont be an issue, but odor will always be, no matter how you choose to grow :twocents:

A 125 ISNT GOING TO BE WORTH THE HASSLE IVE VEGGED UNDER THE SAME 150W VERSIONS AND I WOULD VEG CLONES FOR A WEEK THEN FLOWER THEM FOR 8 ID HAVE 8 PLANTS EACH ONE WOULD WOULD YIELD AROUND 12G EACH GET A DECENT SET UP IF I WERE YOU SUCH AS A SELF CONTAINED GROW CABINET WITH AIR FILTERS FANS EVERYTHING YOU COULD POSSIBLE NEED NO SMELL OR ANYTHING BELIEVE ME A WARDROBE SET UP STINKS YOU CAN SMELL IT ALL OVER THE HOUSE

hi rastagal
I have a wardrobe closet (4 x 5) that I grow in. I cover up 2 holes at the bottom with a piece of cardboard and then tape over that. Keeps it nice and dark for budding. I'd also up the wattage. You're not going to get much with 125 watts. In the day, I open up the closet and turn on the fan. It works for me! Good luck.
peace,

Hi, thanks for that, the cardboard should be easy for me :)
If I get another 125w envirolite, would this be enough do you think?

if your only going to grow one plant, then the one 125w will be enough, but you may want to hang some mylar ($1.99 emergency blanket from the camping section at wally world, or any outdoors/ backpackers shop) so that the area is smaller... any more plants or a large area would require more light
if the grow area is much larger than the plant then alot of light is wasted, scale it down to just fit the plants you have and more light will be reflected back to the plants
ex: watts per square foot is a pretty good measure for light... you want way more than 50 since this is fluoro (50w per sq.ft. is the rule of thumb for HID lights)... but with just one plant you could hang a divider so that if you have a 4 square foot area now, it becomes half that, basically doubling the light / area ratio, resulting in much more light available for the plant
of course that is the cheap way, and it depends on how many plants you wanna grow.... personally i would use that 125w light in a maximum area of 2 square feet.... my current grow is a micro project that is only 1 square foot for a single plant, running 105w of fluoro light :D

Im hoping for three at max I guess, so I should get another light?

definately :D
unless you can cram all 3 plants into a 2sq.ft. area lol
50w psf of HID... that number for fluoro is definately going to be higher but the exact amount is debateable / dependent on the type of fluors you use
i try to keep a minimum of 80 psf with fluors, curently just over 100.. not to say that less wont work, but more will be better :D

and I thought this was going to be easy ....LOL
thanks for all the help, im still trying to process.
Ive learned over the last few days that my plant needs nitrgoen also.
I thought I could just stick seed in pot, and wait.
How innocent was I?

lol yep... not only nitrogen, either
ferts have 3 numbers, corresponding to an n-p-k ratio - nitrogen phosphorus and potassium
you want a fert that is high in n for now, but a week or 2 after you switch the lights to flowering, you want ferts that are high in p and k
and for the last 2 weeks, no ferts at all, plain water to wash the ferts away, fan leaves will yellow off at this point, completely normal - this means the plant is using nutes from its vegetation, and not the soil, flushing all those excess nutes out of the soil/plant will make your end result smoother and tastier
i would suggest fox farms grow big for now and big bloom for flowering, or earth juice grow and bloom... stick to the organics if ya can, the better the food, the better results :D

there has GOT to be an npk ratio on it somewhere... all ferts do
the rest of that is a bunch of marketing BS.. proper care (which includes proper feeding) will result in all of that too :)

OH.. heres why
diamond nectar is not a fert! plus it is made for hydro systems! if you want... use a very small amount of it... but what you have is just humic acid... it is made to AID in the uptake of nutes, but you definately dont need it
this is from the general hydroponics website :
" DIAMOND NECTARâ?¢
Liquid Premium Organic Humic Acid
Despite the low level of nutrients found in natural soil-based environments, plant growth nevertheless occurs because the smallest humic acids channel available nutrients directly into nearby vegetation. By accelerating nutrient absorption at the root boundary zone where minerals enter the plant, small particle sized humic acids optimize nutrient uptake in fast growing vegetation. Diamond Nectar applies the magic of the smallest available humic acids to nutrient rich hydroponic environments by grabbing these nutrient minerals and transporting them into plant roots for faster growth and higher yields. Diamond Nectar supercharges your nutrients in order to optimize the health of your plants and the quality of your crops.
Due to the natural nature of this organic product, variations in color may occur. Be assured each batch of Diamond Nectar is tested for consistent quality and results you can count on. "
you are using soil, so you need soil nutes ... if you dont have a local grow shop check out www.thegrowstore.com and get yourself some fox farm, earth juice, or biobizz ... remember you want 2 bottles , grow AND bloom :D

oops, bloody hell, thanks for that, I could have killed my baby!!!
I have a local garden center locally, I'll go over and see if they have anything.
I got all the hydro stuff, cos Im waiting on aerofarm, I just thought it would be okay for soil.
So, something with npk nit, poss, phos? yes?
Ok, think I got that!
thanks, you're a life saver.

yep thats right
its all good.. .we're here to help :)
for reference, here are the npk ratios on fox farms nutes
grow big (veg) : 6-4-4
tiger bloom (optional, flowering) : 2-8-4
big bloom 100% organic (flowering) : 0.01-0.3-0.7
the numbers themselves arent too important, just the ratio they appear in... high N for veg, high P & K for flower... any garden center will have grow and bloom ferts that will work for ya, just maybe not the ones i have mentioned :D

you're a sweetheart thanks a million for spotting that I was using wrong stuff. whw!
I went to garden center today and got food called baby Bio, it 10.6. 4.4. 1.7
I also bought a small oscillating desk fan.
Now I just need patience, its like watching a pot boil. I keep running in to peek at it. LOL
