I live in the crappy midwest, and was wondering if anyone else here knows about growing in these parts. I have the perfect land and spots to grow, but i know basically nothing about doing it. Can i plant the seeds directly into outdoor soil or do i have to start them in pots, cause i can't have them near the house or the rents will obviously see them. Here's some super noob questions.
1.) Can i pick seeds out of weed i've bought and use them? Where can i get some seeds
2.) How can you tell if the plant is female... cause males are 100% worthless right?
I know i'm not gonna be an expert grower after one year, but when next spring comes around (I'm guessing you'd plant in May for the midwest right?) i'd like to grow a few plants just to get a basis and learn. Any help is appreciated!

Hey Skarz....
1. Yes... although their germination success rate is questionable... But hey, free seeds? Try it! Where to get seeds? Try KindKid, he's great. Here's his thread http://boards.cannabis.com/showthread.php?t=23810
There are many more, but I like KK.
2. Plant is female.... Well, there are feminized seeds which increase the odds of getting a female... Or, you have to grow your plant and wait for the pre-flowers to show. You then compare what you see in the pre-flowers with pictures over here in the FAQ forum.
You can also, (as I'm going to do), 'clone for sex.' Which is, you have your plant on vegetative growth, and you take a clone for her/him... then, you put that clone into 12/12 light to force flowering.... Once the clone shows its sex (male/female), you know what sex its mother plant is.
Males 100% worthless? Well, I think that yes. But they look pretty.
Some people here sell males to unsuspecting and uninformed teen noob tokers... but that's just plain wrong.

Hmmm..... You want information on how to grow? There's two ways to go about doing that. One way is to go to a book store such as Barnes&Noble, Borders or Books A Million and buy a cannabis cultivation book such as The Cannabis Grow Bible by Greg Green or similar book. The other way is www.growchronic.com
The second route method is free but the infomation is very basic to say the least. If you want to become a pro I suggest buying a book on the subject as soon as it is possible for you to do so. Hope I was of help to you and good luck.

do you guys know any strains that will grow really fast, since our growing season in the midwest is short. Even if its not high quality... i need to start somewhere. Anything that will pump it out fast.

Maybe LowRider (lowryder?)...

or get an early strain, how short is your grow season(whens first frost roughly)? you could grow a few sets of lowriders as they go from seed to harvest in around 8 weeks, f*king amazing

take it easy, the mid-west isnt that bad. Good so- Great soil. Our season is as long as most of the other regions. Our last frost is around march 15. You'll have growing conditions in april... giving you from then until october to harvest. I dont kno about where you live but dont make the whole mid-west sound bad. Just pick the plant you like that most out of all the outdoor strains. <--- im not mad or being an ass.. just saying we are in one of the best areas to grow.
