I have watched cops since it's begining i only put it on when there is nothing on and i feel bad. A Marilyn Monroe flick...and an old black and white silent movie with Buster Keaton and what might have been Keystone Cops.

I sat alone in the dark and watched them. Buster Keaton made me laugh so hard I almost ruptured myself.

And you can't sit down and watch something for more than ten minutes without being urged to buy all sorts of shit you don't need. I had to watch about 20 minutes of MTV last week and I was thoroughly disgusted by what our culture has degenerated into. There's Carson Daly whoring out music videos for the record companies, and hundreds of screaming teens who are being taught that nothing really matters except the lives of celebrities. Just a few decades ago kids were screaming about the Vietnam War, about civil rights and about peace and love. Now they scream whenever the latest crappy pop musician comes out with another crappy album full of songs that don't mean anything. Whatever happened to ideals, to things that tried to send a message?

Cops isn't much better. Just a bunch of violent criminals who think they're better than all the other violent criminals because they have uniforms and badges and superior firepower. What is this teaching people? Shut up and obey the rules of the dominant gang or get your ass kicked, that's what.

So dont act like your all high and mighty just because you read, what do you want a cookie or a pat on the back??

And what about Family Guy, the Simpsons, seinfeld, or even the daily show, do you hate those shows too?

Hey, I didn't choose to watch TRL. It was on in a public place where I happened to be at the moment. And the people around me were very interested. Even those channels which are supposed to be educational have to be dumbed down to a large degree so the average Joe can follow along, and they can't present any ideas that might offend a significant number of people. And the commercials get very annoying very quickly. It's as if I'm reading a book and every ten minutes somebody takes it away from me and starts talking about how great their laundry detergent is. Fuck that.

I don't consider reading to be something that makes me "high and mighty". It's just something every person should do, like exercising or brushing your teeth.

Now that you mention it, my interest in these shows is certainly waning. I've been having a lot more fun since I turned off the tube and started living life. I've been learning to control my dreams, teaching myself several languages, stargazing, developing my personal philosophy, and even getting into Mongolian throat singing, among other things, all of which are infinitely more fulfilling than watching some television show.

I'm glad you agree with me. I too don't let modern music or television influence me. I observe it rather like an alien would, examining what it is and what it means about our culture. And frankly, it scares the shit out of me when I compare it to the popular culture of the past. Nothing means anything to anyone anymore, like nothing had meaning to me during my youth when I wasted so many precious years in front of the tube mindlessly absorbing whatever was on. I was lucky enough to break myself out of that vicious cycle and am afraid I might slip into it again if I observe too much too often.

It's rather unfortunate that you've given up hope in humanity, especially when there are so many inspiring historical examples we could be following. I don't blame you for giving up hope in the midst of all this mindless apathy, but I believe this is really specific to our era of mass media and systematized stupidification (is that a word?). Time and time again history has shown us that the human spirit when put to work can achieve freedom and spontaneity the likes of which had never been seen before. Even the majority. Impossible. And once we did, would our efforts to fix things succeed? The United States, like communism, are great ideas which just don't work. How do we know what will work? That leads us to anarchism, which I think is literally impossible to achieve, and if it is achieved, literally impossible to uphold. Government is inevitable. Power is an instinct. You can't ignore instincts. Plus what's to stop the next man from killing you on a whim? We would be unable to create any form of correspondence to people across the globe, because the lack of rules and regulations would prevent us from being capable of building a team coordinated enough to build something that sophisticated. In fact, any form of group bearing a set of rules would be contradictory to the essence of anarchism. Plus, the entire world would need to be anarchists, or the region who is would simply be overrun and taken over.

How was the anarchist Makhnovshchino able to successfully defend itself against several foreign armies before their communist allies betrayed and destroyed them? They clearly weren't defenseless. How was it that thousands of anarchist collectives and voluntary popular militias were able to defend themselves against Franco's fascist army in the Spanish Civil War for several years? People used to say the republic was impossible, that without the absolute rule of a monarch society would collapse into chaotic disorder. That didn't happen when republics were established. Same goes for anarchy. People say that with that kind of increased freedom, people would be allowed to murder and rape and pillage all they want, but this has not borne out in the anarchist societies of the past. You'd be hard pressed to find stories of mass murderers gone unpunished in the Spanish anarchist collectives, or in the anarchist communities of the Ukraine during the Russian Revolution. In fact, it has been one of the primary goals of anarchist societies to prevent people from asserting their domination over others, be it by rape, murder or government. Just because people weren't being bossed around didn't mean they were vulnerable to anybody who decided to assert their authority through violence. If anarchist societies were possible in the past, why is there any reason to assume they're impossible now? Government is certainly not inevitable, and power not a basic instinct. Government has been around for only about 1% of human history. Before that people generally lived as equals, without bosses and politicians, and were quite happy that way. But this is really a discussion for the Politics board, so I'll shut up now.
