It's 1996...I'm serving my mandatory service in the military...which if you're in the Greek military means you get 2 fire a couple of rounds every day while in basic training and then you're moved to your unit where you spent half your time tokin under the trees and the other half doing chores around the camp...
So basically it's all peaceful...I was having fun with cuz at the time I had just graduated from High School and had my whole life ahead of me...and i was in the Army! I would wear the khakis and everything and my days in the camp were going by ever so blissfully...
Then that May day came...
I'm up at 6 am as usual and head to the barrack's cafeteria to get myself a coffee and some breakfast b4 my company goes out on our daily up-the-hill running...I notice there's a lot of unrest around the camp this day...Military trucks and APC's(Armored Personnel Carriers) are parked in formation in the parking lot where only the officer's cars were parked...officers are screaming around like mad to the soldiers to line up! I'm impressed cuz I've never seen all of our vehicles out of their hangars b4 and the officers are usually laid back and relaxed ppl...
So I'm stopped by a guy from my company half way to the cafeteria! He's like..."No time for breakfast man they're lining us up and loading us into the trucks...Get geared up, go pick some ammo from Supplies and then head for the soccer court asap...if you dun get accounted for they'll rank you as a deserter!!!"
And then I'm like "Holy fuck!"
2.5 hours later I'm on a truck heading to the border aware of the fact that the Turks had landed marines on 2 minor Greek islands(I didn't even know where these were at the time...) and thus my unit was to deploy along the border and if full scale hostilities commence we' were to invade into Turkish territory...
I even had a jay on me for the ride but I was really really nervous about smoking it cuz I was thinking..."Awright boy, do u wanna go to war stoned?"

Thank God just 3 days after having camped along the border and facing the Turks getting ready for war on the other side when on patrol the whole thing was resolved peacefuly...

I was told later by an officer that was usually leading my platoon into patrol that at some point we had stepped into turkish territory and that the huge wall of bush we faced at some point was the camouflaged fence of a Turkish
camp....

Dude. That's kinda scary - the "oh-by-the-way we crossed into enemy territory and were staring right at their camp" bit.

Wow, that sucks. But your Army sounds badass in times of peace.
