If you think that smoking weed while you're pregnant is okay...think again.

Babies are meant to be born without Melatonin and have to rely on their Mother's Breast Milk to get it, the first 3 months, until their Pineal starts producing it naturallly, through Amino Acids.

Smoking Weed raises your Melatonin Levels 4,000%, two hours after smoking a joint.

This is off of Melatonin.com:

Should certain people avoid it?

Yes. "Those include women who are pregnant or nursing (since no one knows how excessive exposure to the hormone might affect a fetus or infant); people with severe allergies or autoimmune diseases (melatonin could exacerbate such conditions by stimulating the immune system); people with immune-system cancers such as lymphoma or leukemia (for the same reason), and healthy children (who already produce it in abundance). Women trying to conceive should also think twice about taking the hormone, since high doses can act as a contraceptive." As with any substance introduced into your body, if you have a medical condition you should always consult your physician first before taking melatonin.

:what:

That's not on melatonin.com (which is a commercial site, btw).

I know exposure to the sun raises melatonin levels, but never heard that pot did.

Now I'm no physician, but my mom did smoke a lot of pot when she was pregnant with me, and there is nothing wrong with me at all. I'm not saying it can't have any negative effects, but there are certainly enough counterexamples that I know of which show that it is possible to smoke pot during pregnancy and still have a healthy baby.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melatonin :
"There have not been sufficient studies done on pregnant women concerning possible teratogenic effects. This is an area that needs to be addressed."

Perhaps you're thinking of melanin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melanin), the chemical which determines skin color.

Perhaps you're thinking of melanin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melanin), the chemical which determines skin color.
Melanin, the pigment responsible for dark skin in some peoples and for tanning after exposure to sunlight in light-skinned peoples, is produced from the "natural" indole and amino acid, tryptophan. Melatonin, which is synthesized by our bodies only in the dark, blocks the synthesis of melanin.

Wait. So if smoking pot increases your melatonin levels, and melatonin blocks the synthesis of melanin, does that mean smoking pot makes you whiter? If so, I think I just found the explanation for Michael Jackson. :stoned: :stoned: :stoned:

Sheeeeeee-it!

That's not something I'd want to gamble with. I'd need %100 agreement in the scientific community that's it's absolutely harmless to even consider letting her take in second-hand weed smoke. You just don't mix foreign substances to a pregnant woman. Weed, alchohol, tobacco, none of it.

And you could bet your ass I'd be toughing it out right alongside her. It's just cruel to get baked when she's sitting inside twiddling her thumbs.

better safe than sorry though, id rather give up for 9 months than risk anthing going wrong. you would blame yourself if something was wrong with your baby & you wouldnt ever know if it was to do with the weed or just a coincidence.
when you're pregnant you should put the babys welfare before your own desires.

What are drugs doing to your un-united eggs and sperm?

Any guarantees that E, Shrooms, scripts, otcs, alcohol, coffee, or even pot won't affect a conception you participate in later in life?

Not to mention food additives, car exhausts, water impurities, etc, etc, etc.
:glugglug:

They also say on melatonin.com -
"Melatonin is one of the least toxic substances known. People have taken as much as 6 grams (600 to 3000 times the normal dosage) of the substance in carefully monitored studies with no sign of toxicity. Only four complaints regarding melatonin have been report to the FDA (USA's Food and Drug Administration). The only consistent side effect of high doses has been drowsiness and a slower reaction time. In the most extensive clinical trial to date a high dose of 75 milligrams of melatonin per day was given to 1400 women in the Netherlands for up to four years with no ill effects. The FDA reports that in the more than two years melatonin has been available for sale over-the-counter in the United States, no alarming side effects have been reported."

I did find a reference to the pot/melatonin study on the web, but not much on who did it or the methodology, but it was apparently an Italian study on 8 men.

i doubt weed raises melatonin of 4000%.

there are sleeping pills that are called melatonin (made with this hormone), and u take 1 and u fall asleep for 9 hours. plus, they dont recommend to take too often of those coz melatonin can disbalance the system.

so i guess if weed increase that much melatonin it would be bad for the body. which isnt the case. can u post a reveilable link where it is scientifictly proved that weed increase that much melatonin?

still strange. and many pregnant womens smoke weed and they have no probs. i think this site is bullshit

Italian researchers proved it in 1986.

11. Lissoni, P., Resentini, M., and Fraschini, F. "Effects of Tetrahydrocannabinol on Melatonin Secretion in Man." Hormone and Metabolic Research 1986; 77-78. At baseline, the mean value of their melatonin levels was 21.3 pg/ml. Two hours later, it was 904 pg/ml.

They're still not exactly sure what the enhanced melatonin levels to a fetus would do. I think it might make it crazy. Maybe not. Melatonin is good for you, essentially, and the recent discovery of it in 1986 should make us re-think our stand on weed, as a governmental issue. Nothing increases is better unless you take a straight shot of liquid melatonin... :what:

If God wanted you to be born with Melatonin, he would have given it to newborn babies. Newborn's are supposed to be born with none and naturally develop the production skills. It says that adolescents should avoid melatonin-enhancers because they are already producing it in high levels. I don't know what an overdose of Melatonin would do, it's not gonna kill you.

I don't see how this proves smoking cannabis during pregnancy results in harm to a developing fetus or infant. It just says "no one knows how excessive exposure to the hormone might affect a fetus or infant". Also, that babies "have to rely on their Mother's Breast Milk to get it" indicating the infants would acquire the hormone anyways through breastmilk (assuming the mother feeds the infant that way).
To use this as the basis for the argument that smoking marijuana at any time during pregnancy is a bad thing would assume that excessive exposure to melatonin negatively affects the fetus.

As for this Italian melatonin study, I don't doubt it but a study involving only eight men doesn't totally satisfy my skepticism.

Some people have to do research on their own if they can't believe an inkling of what someone else has to say, and if they don't believe it without disproving it, then there's no reason to dismiss the fact that they're ignorant, arrogant, and dyslexic.
