I've seen my roommates at college do it, I never asked them out it turned out.
I think it may ruin your pan, or give it resin stains and then you have to scrape your pan. I just pour hot water down my steamroller to keep it clean.

I've done it, just keep the windows open or your house will smell like resin for a while, not that that is a bad thing. that that?

be sure to have your pipe in the water from the get go, dropping a room temperature pipe into boiling water can cause them to crack. you can also line the inside of the pot with tin foil to minimize ruining your cookware.

how about you just put the pipe in a plastic bag..keep it in the pan..when it gets hot you scrape your pipe because the resin will be so hot it will slide off yoru pipe like butter. I did it this way all the time.

yeah if the pipes temerature drops 15 degrees or more instantly, then it can break if it hits that pan. so put it in the pan while the water is still cold. whey if you boil a peice, when the resin goes away, will the smoke?

the easy method we use at college:
1 rubbermaid container
1 micorwave
1 piece
a squirt of Dawn dishwashing detergent
NUKE ON 8 minutes
Smells like shit, but works like a charm.

Put ur pipe or whatever under hot water and the resin will just filter out when you pour the water back into the sink. At leeast, that's how i clean my bubbler.

I just boil mine to soften the rez up and then scrape it out with a paperclip or whatever is handy. If you want to remove the rez for cleanliness' sake, then after you scrape it all out, boil it in a big pot of water for an hour or so. It'll clean out the rest that you just can't get with a paperclip.

I wouldn't advise using boiling water on glass.
