How do ppl have accents?

People that first populated those towns would have come from another country/place that used that accent and over the years it has just evolved and changed a little, like the words and things they used to use in Shakesperean times that we neglect in today's world:D

Now my heads spinnin and im tryin to think of why when I go down south my southern draw is alot more apparent then when im back in Michigan. I mean, I always have it alil bit but, nothing like when I get around my family or when I go down south. Also a giant can throw a midget between 300-400 yards i do believe, IIRC:D

I think its probably because people are generally lazy and don't pronounce words as they're intended to be spoken, over time others pick up on these words and imitate how they're spoken.

Just like groups of friends tend to use the same sayings and if you hang around with certain people you tend to pick up similar facial expressions, people in general like to copy weither consciouslly or not.

It's the people not the area. However a certain group or groups of people talk in a certain area and however a person is raised or however long he/she is in that environment will determine their accent.

To English people we have an American accent.

And to us they have an Australian accent.

I always knew those English mates were Canadian.

We adapt to our surroundings, we develop an ear for the way people talk in order to understand them, and whichever accent has the most play in your environment (which also tends to become the accent you most understand) is more than likely the accent you'll pick up. Any other way of talk you hear will be an "accent" in your world, because that way of speaking/pronounciation is not the form of speak you understand the most.

There's also North Country people, up across the lake from Burlington, VT; the people from the Lake George Region; Capital District; Catskills; Ogdensburg Area; Long Island are totally different from Brooklynites, who differ, tremendously, from people in the City (which is what Manhattan is considered); Just above New York City is a people in their own Right, I can't remember the name of the place, right now; Then you have Amster-Rico-Dam, which is my Hometown, where a number of Italians, Polish, Irish, Lithuanians, Puerto Ricans, Germans, Mexicans, Arabs (the Mini-Mart, etc.), etc. settled. Amsterdam, NY was the Rug Capital Of The World, in like the '50's, and it's the birthplace of Kirk Douglas (Sr.).

New York is a great state, it's too bad they won't allow me to drive there, anymore.

What's really strange is to hear a foriegn accent in another language. For example, someone from France will have a noticable French accent when speaking English. But they'll also have it when speaking a language other than French or English. Say, Chinese for example.

I spent a semester in China learning Chinese. I lived in the foriegn students dorm with folks from all over the world. A lot of them didn't speak English so if we wanted to talk it would have to be in our butchered Chinese. It was hilarious hearing all these people speaking Chinese but with a French, English, Japanese. etc. accent. And, you would know what the accent was when they were speaking Chinese as easily as if they were speaking English.

Same here; being around family or unfamiliar places causes my accent to get very thick and syrupy. I have very little drawl thanks to acting classes but certain words like bayou, poison, scissors will always remain heavily mispronounced. lol
