This planet has put up with much worse than us. It’s been through earthquakes, volcanoes, plate tectonics, solar flares, sunspots, magnetic storms, pole reversals, planetary floods, worldwide fires, tidal waves, wind and water erosion, ice ages and hundreds of thousands of years of bombardment by comets, asteroids, and meteors. You think a few plastic bags and aluminum cans are going to make a difference?
The planet isn’t going anywhere, folks, we are! We’re going away. Pack your shit – we won’t leave much of a trace. Thank God for that. Nothing left. Maybe just a little Styrofoam. The planet will be here, and we’ll be gone. Another failed mutation; another closed-end biological mistake.
The planet will shake us off like a bad case of fleas. And it will heal itself, because that what it does; it’s a self-correcting system. The air and water and earth will recover and be renewed. And if plastic isn’t really degradable, most likely the planet will incorporate it into a new paradigm: The Earth Plus Plastic.
The Earth doesn’t have a particular prejudice against plastic. Plastic came out of the earth. Perhaps she sees it as one of her many children. It could be the reason the Earth allowed us to be spawned here in the first place. She wanted plastic, but didn’t know how to get it!
Philosophers say, "Why are we here?" The planet says, "Plastic, asshole!"

It's not hurricanes or dead catholics we should be worrying about, and it's not the earth reversing it's spin or shifting it's axis either...
Everything we've built in society depends on a CHEAP source of energy. Everything created now uses oil. It doesn't matter what it is, you can't mass produce much of anything (or travel) without oil. Consumerism has gotten so bad now that the media, as well as our great political leaders, all overlook the fact that OIL is running OUT and has been for some time. They are already pumping water into some of the major wells in Iraq to get the excess remnants out. Granted, there are still huge oil wells in Alberta...
Despite that, though, it has been predicted that within the next ten years, we will see a worldwide oil shortage. It makes sense. Since before I was born, gas prices have been going up. How they are now is a perfect example of the unrest in the oil world. By Christmas this year they are going to be even higher, and by the end of next year... Well, you get the idea.
What this means, though, is that the modern working class, or middle class, will be completely eliminated. Only the excessively rich are going to be able to afford the fossil fuels that our society has made a necessity. Furthermore, it means the people are going to be forced to function as parts of communities or localities... Importing your pizza pops won't be possible anymore, agriculture is, once again, going to be the most important part of our survival (Which is a whole other story considering the condition of most of the soil nowadays).
This all could have been avoided if the oil companies hadn't tyranted the energy scene. I know a man who made a carbeurator for his car that gave him 100 miles to the gallon... A HUNDRED MILES TO THE GALLON
SHELL OIL bought it for a few thousand and it was never heard of again.
If Volkswagen had come out with their new hydrogen combustion engine 10 years ago, and plans were made to actually implement the energy source, We could have avoided this disaster.
But there is nothing at this stage in the game that we can do to stop this from happening unless everyone starts seeing it for what it is. And I guarantee you the oil and car companies, media, and politicians won't.
Anyway that's my story..
ermitonto
10-22-2005, 05:56 PM
Yeah, peak oil (http://www.oilempire.us/peakoil.html) is going to fuck things up for sure. It won't be the end of the world, it won't even be the end of civilization, but it will change society drastically, marking the end of the age of hyperconsumption. Our lifestyles simply aren't sustainable, and the proof will be delivered in the coming decades.

man oil is a big part of all the pollution goin in the world, but pollution may not be only the cause of our extinction. first, yes pollution is a major cause of hurricanes and all, which multiplies exponentially since few decades, but we have our ressources too. more than hundreds of millions of ppl each year die coz they have no water.
what about wood? we destruct forests everyday. we kill like 100 species everyday (not sure bout that number). anyway, soon we will be too much, too much pollution, too much ppl, too much war, viruses, hurricanes, lack of water, space, more poverty everywhere, etc, etc
those are all causes of our problems
the system is just not working
everybody is too indivudualist, they refuse to see the truth: capitalist is NOT working. yes it SEEMS to work for NOW, but we dont consider all the repercussions on the next generation of all our consuming madness.
all this is bullshit. i hate our system, i hate how we kill and exploit ppl, i hate how world lost all his spirituality, all his meaning to life, how ppl became so blinded by this system brainwashing everyone. i hate how everyone think happiness is found around them.

"To speak of 'limits to growth' under a capitalistic market economy is as meaningless as to speak of limits of warfare under a warrior society. The moral pieties, that are voiced today by many well-meaning environmentalists, are as naive as the moral pieties of multinationals are manipulative. Capitalism can no more be 'persuaded' to limit growth than a human being can be 'persuaded' to stop breathing. Attempts to 'green' capitalism, to make it 'ecological', are doomed by the very nature of the system as a system of endless growth." —Murray Bookchin

There was a prophecy, I can't remember who the prophet was, but it was in a book that included Nostradamus and Lady Nadia. It said we will be experiencing fires, floods, earthquakes, and man-made disasters around the time of an Armageddon, or something like that (I read this 6 yrs. ago, or so), and this is sort of what we're going through. Most of the prophecies about the future, say there's life after 'this coming event' (whatever it may be), actually, all, I think. They all said that there would be major catastrophies before this "once in a lifetime, I mean, Universe" event. I'm not too clear on it, but you get my drift, you can look up all the prophecies, I'd like to hear them, again.
My view is that we're at it, and we can, not only make it through it but, make it better. None of the prophecies said it would be a "second-coming" or third, or whatever...
I think the people alive back then are us. I'm starting to believe in re-incarnation.
edit: when I say there was a "prophecy", up top, I mean, this is what "all" the prophecies, about today on, say. Not all. But all three or four that I read.
ermitonto
10-22-2005, 06:23 PM
But you have to remember that there isn't a single time in the history of man when there wasn't fires and floods and earthquakes and other disasters. They're just part of life, and there's no reason to believe the disasters of today are any more meaningful than the disasters that have been occurring for billions of years.

Oh, really? The Aztecs? THE FUCKING AZTECS? These were people who thought a stomachache was caused by a family of goblins living in your stomache. SO NOW WE TRUST THEM IN KNOWING WHEN THE FUCKING WORLD ENDS!?!
Oh, and the Tsunamis, violence, wildfires, and people dying. Yeah, you see, that stuff has happened before. It'll happen again.
If that stuff means the world's ending, how's this? My kitty just had kittens! They're adorable! I could just play with them all day! And I'm about to get a nice 1/8 of some GOOD shit! And look outside. Do you see the storm that ISN'T happening?
Therefore, the world isn't ending. If bad stuff = end, then good stuff = not end. The equation looks the same as before. There's good shit happening, and there's bad stuff happening.
And hey, it's amazing how much easier breathing is when you PULL YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS!
Oh, and I respect your opinion and all that.

Man, I never really thought about it. But the lady at work got me believing a little bit. We argued for about 2 hours and she proved a bunch of valid points that started to scare the shit out of me.
The size, strength, and number of hurricanes
-climate change perhapse? I'm no scientist, but even if that's not the cause, remember that we're hearing about all these events more than ever. only recently do we get a national brodcast of every mudslide, flood, drougt, hurricane, plague, and crop circle. regardless, some excessive hurricanes doesn't mean the end of the world.
The tsunamis
- What was there, like 2? there's a reason we even have the name tsunami, because they've happened before.
Wildfires
- not uncommon at all.
The Pope Died
- yeah, they tend to do that.
Mt. St. Helens is now active
- my memory isn't too fresh in regards to the geological history of the earth, but I think there's been, oh, a couple volcanoes active in the past 6 billion years or so.
The new "flu" strain that is said to kill millions.
- yep, just like the one that killed millions in the 1930's (perhapse it was 20's), or the black plague that wiped out 1/3 of Europe (I recall everybody was pretty sure that was the apocalypse too), or the massive floods and famines that have killed millions of chinese for the past several thousand years... nuts, I'm pretty sure there was one other historical event involving the death of many people, otherwise the past has been mostly rainbows and fully bunnies.
The massive earthquakes
yep, historie's had its share of those.
The violence
all this terrorism and 2 small wars certainly is a lot of violence. certainly, it is unmatched by the crusades, ww2, ww1, chinese cultural revolution, nazi extermination of 11 million civilians, rawanda, 50 million killed/disappeared in soviet russia, multiple warlords in africa, ghengis kahn who conquered more land than anybody in history (all the way over to poland) and slaughtered all in his path on the way, the thousands of years of warring shoguns in japan, the roman/barbarian wars, the massive middle eastern wars to assert dominance in the cradle of civilization (babylon, now iraq), the US civil war, all the other civil wars, the brutal occupation of ireland and scotland by the british, vietnam, korea, russo-japan wars *deep breath*. yep, nothing in history as bad as today.

that whole "bible code" stuff is old and disproven. you can proably take a stephen king novel and splice the letters into some secret message. after all, who's the genious who figured out how to do this? to actually write an entire holy book with all the word of god fully conveyed througout, but somehow all put together with entire other messages spliced into the original messages. you'd have to get together the most crafty and intelligent people in existence to make that work, the kind of people who can decipher military codes in 5 seconds by looking at it.

It just seems that a pattern is developing, and with the Ozone layer thinning out, it's creating weird precipitation patterns, so the hurricane's will, probably, get worse.
But there's another reason for some hurricanes, and that has to do with Plate Tectonics, sending waves that becoming Tropical waves, then storms.
Also, an earthquake, deep in the Pacific, is responsible for the Tsunami, in Japan. Haley's comet misses us, on schedule, I don't think it's in the stars to destroy us. Our atmosphere burns up a lot of what space don't deteriorate. The Asteroids are the closest thing floating around that would crash into us.

There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink."
For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.
The Samaritan woman said to him, "How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?" For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.
Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, `Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water."
The woman said to him, "Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep; where do you get that living water?
Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, and his sons, and his cattle?"
Jesus said to her, "Every one who drinks of this water will thirst again,
but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst; the water that I shall give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

I'm not getting into it when people say no, what are you crazy? But, I think in ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^your post.
Jesus was talking about Herb.
Jesus said to her, "Every one who drinks of this water will thirst again,
but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst; the water that I shall give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

How do we really know that the climatic changes we are starting to see now haven't happened before ? Why do you think they call them the Dark Ages? And what happens to a car when it runs low on oil? The head cracks, who's to say that we aren't doing the same thing to mother earth? And wasn't the Bible that we are all spoon fed from birth revised by King James? Was this ppiece of litrature written to control the masses and prevent sex out of wedlock, or worse yet only for procreation. Whose to say that Jesus wasen't just a really good con-artist? Just a little gristle to get hung in your teeth. The world we live in is more than we know.

as you get older and older the bible, and the world at large becomes a moot point as you begin to enter your own personal world ending. when people mention the end of the world, old people just smile at you, knowing it all makes no difference.

One time a friend and I were playing with the Ouija board, and it told us that the end of The United States would come in 2044. When asked what the cause would be, its response was:
An oil drum will not be refilled.
That is really scary!! i believe it though, of course oil would be the U.S.'s demise!

According to James Redfeilds The 10th Insight
well he claims to have made multiple voyages into the Otherworld, Afterlife Dimension..whatever you want to call it.
According to this book when one orgasms it opens a portal there. Then for a breif moment you feel a little bit of what it feels like there. Pure ecstacy.
The book says this portal is how a soul enters a womb. Seems plausible to me.
So, no need for all that stuff really. Orgasms for eternity!!!
However, you can supposedly create entire worlds and live there for an indefinate amount of time. This is where Hell sets in..people make up these hellish realities, unaware they are creating them..for a long time..
anyway, you could create a masturbation sex world, i suppose. :stoned:

I completly agree....but....i reckon its just the media getting peop-le worked up about things they shouldn't be.....I dont think there was a mass frenzy at the black plague because nobody knew it was going to happen untill it hit....with the bird flu we know its comming.....but the same was said for BSE (mad cow disease) and that never even happened....
I dont even think this will turn into a pandemic....it doent spread from human to human yet....and even if it does mutate into a disease that can be spread from human to human you need to have the flu in order to catch the Avian influenza.....and flu normally only affects the old and young....
Also there is sweet FA we can do about any of these tragedies....if its going to happen its going to happen...its just nature taking its course
and that quote posted by ermitonto sounds pretty close to me.....amazing quote :)

I was thinking about the end of the world, or the end, as "we" know it. The ancient Aztecs smoked a plant mixture that contained DMT, a chemical that causes deep hallucinations, but more importantly it frees the inner self and lets it roam in the cosmic innervers. They would speak with beings they called "gods" and can be seen in their carvings from the temple "of the smoking god". Their calendar ends in 2012 December to be exact. They depict not a cataclysmic disaster but the liberation of the soul.
eather way, i'm ready bring it on!

Well, not quite.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya_calendar
The turn of the great cycle is conjectured to have been of great significance to the Maya, but does not necessarily mark the end of the world. According to the Popol Vuh, a sacred book of the Maya, they were living in the fourth world. The Popol Vuh describes the first three worlds that the gods failed in making and the creation of the successful fourth world where men were placed. The Maya believed that the fourth world would end in catastrophe and the fifth and final world would be created that would signal the end of mankind.
The last creation ended on a long count of 13.0.0.0.0. Another 13.0.0.0.0 will occur on December 21, 2012, and it has been discussed in many New Age articles and books that this will be the end of this creation or something else entirely. However, the Maya abbreviated their long counts to just the last five vigesimal places. There were an infinitely larger number of units that were usually not shown. When the larger units were shown (notably on a monument from Coba), it is expressed as 13.13.13.13.13.13.13.0.0.0.0, where the larger units are evidently supposed to be 13s in all larger places. In this age we are only approaching 0.0.0.0.0.0.13.0.0.0.0, and the larger places are nowhere near the 13s that would match the end of the last creation.
This is confirmed by a date from Palenque, which projects forward in time to 1.0.0.0.0.0, which will occur on October 13, 4772. The Classic Period Maya obviously did not believe that the end of this age would occur in 2012. There will be a Baktun ending in 2012, a significant event being the end of a 400 year period, but not the end of the age.
Well, not quite.

that is, according to christianity. TBH I believe in nothing, maybe A god, but to me christianity is only one of the tens of thousands of religions. Most all religions say that if you dont believe in them, your going to some sort of hell. So what gives it any bette than 1/10,000 chance of being the correct one? Only reason my dog tags said catholic was because navy had a one hour catholic service and half hour for jewish. Every other one was even shorter lol. Hour of free time = a helluva lot better then scrubbin. Either way, we both know that debating christianity for the purpose of converting one another into our own belief systems would be as pointless as takin a dump in a urinal. To be religously prejudiced (not you, just in general) is just plain old going against everything america was created for. That is, if your from america :P K Im done rambling.

But then I realized. NEVER has it happened all in such a short time and WHILE Republicans were in office.

When I was really young, I considered my self a Republican, because 'R' is a deeper letter than 'D'. Deeper in the alphabet. I thought being a republican sounded better than being a democrat. Other than the politics, that's been my mental vote for the past twenty-six years.

I am independent. Meaning, I don't vote for Democrats, Republicans, Independents, Communists, Dictators, Virgins, or Potheads.
I like to complain alot about it though.
Voting REALLY HONESTLY in my opinion, is worthless because the people don't decide anyways.
A president can win an election without a majority vote by the people.
if the poles reverse themselves would that make my back yard my front yard? wow, that might be pritty crazy i hope we just get a earth quakes and tsunamis or somthing.
