hi whoscarl. Here's a few measures that will probably remove it. if it doesn't, let me know and I can give you some more in-depth procedures. this program is spyware btw.
1. go into your ad/remove programs and check for new.net and 180searchsolutions. if either of these are in there, remove them. also, if you don't recognize any of the programs, feel free to post them here and I'll let you know if they're legit.
2. download ewido free anti-virus from www.ewido.net . this is a wide-range anti-malware program. do NOT use other anti-malware programs unless you check with an experience person first, as most on the web are spyware themselves.
3. go to www.trendmicro.com and do their free online scan
4. download winpatrol from www.winpatrol.com. this program will list all running processes in your computer and notify you if a new process has been added, asking if it's ok. once installed, you'll have a little black doggy icon in your bottom right-hand corner called "scotty the watchdog".
5. make sure you have all the latest windows security updates and service pack 2 installed. both available at www.microsoft.com

lol, well I sort of agree with you there. the anti-virus is very weak (regardless of what the amateurs who think it's the holy grail of anti-virus say), the maintenanc programs are somewhat decent, and disk doctor just doens't seem to work for anybody. there's free anti-malware programs out there that are much better, such as ewido which I REALLY recommend you and everybody get.
as for the uninstall issue. my answer is yes and no lol. sometimes this will totally remove it, sometimes not, depending on how deeply it's imbedded itself. regardless, it will at least make life more difficult for the malware trying to do it's thing.
the whole norton problem I'm not really sure about. obviously, yes you should try reinstalling it. once you uninstall it however, go into start/run/chkdsk /f . when it says it can't run, do you want to run it on next start up y/n , hit Y and press enter, then reboot. then after it's all done, reinstall norton (assuming you still want it).
also, 2 programs I'd recommend is zonealarm free version, which is a pretty good firewall. and if you're willing to buy a program, I'd recommend getting webroot spysweeper, which you can find in most retail electronics stores.
if you're still having trouble after all this, try the trendmicro 30 day trial anti-spyware, which is best in my opinion. plus, I can walk you through a manual registry edit (which will no doubt find other crap).
