Here it is. My First Draft in all of its Glory and Splendor. read!
Marijuana
By Jake Martinez
In our society there are many forms of Crime. From the Speeder caught unawares while he was simply dozing off on a long, boring drive, to the Mass Murderer sitting in his basement killing small animals in some sort of Sadistic Ritual. Most of our Laws in this glorious United States of America have been made with the good of the people in mind. Some of them, however, aren??t so Justly conceived. I do not wish to dive into every one of These laws; I do wish, however, to have a word with you all about our current Prohibition on Marijuana. There is a separated opinion on Marijuana in the U.S. of A. A person will either believe that it is a Horrible drug and should never be used by any person for any reason; or they will believe that it has some good medical and industrial uses, as well as some very good recreational ones. There are rarely any people who don??t have a solid opinion on the Cannabis plant. I am certainly not one of those people. Marijuana has been proven to be less harmful to your body than Alcohol, Tobacco, and most Prescription drugs. It can also be used to aid our Industry and Environment.
First, I??d like to speak with you regarding Marijuana and Tobacco. Tobacco is one of the only Two legal and morally acceptable recreational drugs in our society. It also contributes to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Americans every single year. 1,200 people are going to die today in our glorious Nation because they can??t resist to have one more smoke. Why is this allowed? For what possible reason could we have to keep Tobacco legal? That is a discussion for a later time. However, knowing that Tobacco is extremely dangerous is imperative in order to understand my argument. Tobacco use, over time, causes many forms of Cancer as well as Respiratory and Circulatory troubles. Marijuana, while it may still cause these Troubles, does not cause These adverse effects as efficiently as Tobacco. Some of you may have heard the phrase: ??One Marijuana Cigarette is equal to Five, Ten, Twenty, etc, Tobacco Cigarettes.? This is only a Half-Truth. While the amount of Tar in a typical Joint is much higher than that of a typical Cigarette, there are other Factors to consider. One: When the Marijuana is good quality, only One joint is typically needed to get ??high?. Even some experienced users with an Extremely high tolerance can sometimes be surprised when they get some High Quality bud. At most, with Low quality Marijuana, a user would smoke Five Joints (.5-1 gram of Marijuana in each) to get a good ??high?. With Tobacco, however, once your tolerance begins to build up, it may take whole packs of Cigarettes to experience the ??high? of tobacco (Dizziness, Hyperactivity, etc.). Not only that, but the active chemical in Tobacco (Nicotine), broken down into an extremely Volatile chemical in the series of chemical reactions that gets you High. Marijuana??s active chemical, Delta-9-TetraHydraCannabinol (THC), does not. It goes in as THC, and comes out as THC. ??Why is this?? you might ask. Our bodies have a special part of the nervous system called the Cannabinoid system. This system is responsible for Calming down nerves that might be having some problems. And guess what? Our bodies produce THC naturally in order to do that. Using Marijuana is just supplementing your own bodies with more of it. Your body doesn??t necessarily need all that THC, and it doesn??t want to simply store it for later, so it Decides to use it all as fast as it possibly can. This is what causes the feelings of Euphoria and whatever other pleasant feelings are associated with a Good ??high?. Therefore, although the Tar in One joint is greater than the Tar in one Cigarette, a Marijuana user will stop after just One to Five Joints, but a Tobacco addict may smoke a pack of cigarettes?and not even feel ??high?. If that is all true, then why is Tobacco legal over Marijuana?
Second, I would like to speak with you regarding Alcohol and Marijuana. Alcohol is the other One of the Sacred Two legal recreational drugs in our society. Why is this, when alcohol also contributes to so many deaths a year? Alcohol acts directly on the Nervous System, altering Nerve signals of all types. Alcohol causes nice people to be Angry, and Angry people to be Murderous. It makes even the Best Driver in the World look like a First Grader with a Death Wish. Sometimes, people get so lost in the Addiction they drink Ungodly amounts of alcohol on a daily basis. Much of My family is dead or dying because of this Evil chemical. Over time, Alcohol use begins to permanently alter our Nervous system. It also wreaks Havoc on our Liver and our Circulatory systems, causing diseases such as Hepatitis, Cirrhosis of the Liver, and Hypertension. One last thing about Alcohol is that it is Quite possible, and Quite easy to Overdose on it. A little too much, and the alcohol permanently shuts down your Nervous system. A little less than that, and you spend Hours nearly paralyzed, running the risk of vomiting, but since your body hardly able to move, it gets stuck in your throat for you to Choke on. There is not one Single reported case where a Human has overdosed on Marijuana. The amount of THC needed to kill 50 out of 100 mice in a clinical study, when administered to them all at once, can not be practically administered to a Human unless the Intent was to kill them. It takes about a Gram of Pure THC in your blood at the most to get High. Anything past that is not only Pointless, but can cause Panic Attacks because it Greatly alters your perceptions. It would take about a Kilogram of Pure THC in your blood to kill you. Generously assuming that Marijuana is 20% THC in weight, and that smoking it gets about 50% of that into your bloodstream, you would have to Smoke 22 pounds, roughly, to kill you. And all of that must be smoked in such a small amount of time that your body doesn??t finish using up any of the THC until the last bit of those 22 pounds gets through your lungs. That is a massive amount of marijuana, especially considering that someone would have to be pretty much breathing nothing but Smoke for 2 hours to even get an eighth of the way there. A person would die of Smoke Inhalation first. I couldn??t tell you how much Alcohol you??d need to Overdose because it??s very dependant on Weight and Liver Capacity, but I Can tell you that it is Very practical and easy to reach. And if you didn??t reach it, you??d have to deal with a Killer Hangover the next time you wake up, and Many I have interviewed can tell you from Experience that Marijuana never causes any sort of hangover. Paranoia, perhaps, but never a hangover. If all This is true, why isn??t Marijuana Legal, but Alcohol is?
Most States in our Great Nation have Illegalized Marijuana, but Some of them have kept it Legal for medical uses. Marijuana certainly won??t Cure any illness, but it can make them more bearable. In Chemotherapy Patients, a Huge loss of appetite is usually experienced, sometimes to the point of not eating anything for days at a time. In the few states that have medical marijuana Legalized, a doctor will prescribe Marijuana or Pure THC for them to get over the pain of cancer and Chemotherapy, and also to give them the dreaded ??Munchies? that some people hate, but is a lifesaver for an Anorexic or a Chemotherapy Patient. Not only that, but by supplementing our Cannabinoid systems with THC, we allow it to do Its job more effectively, Thus greatly decreasing the amount of pain We feel. Compare the negative effects of Marijuana I have Already told You to the negative effects of Prescribed Barbiturates, Tranquilizers, and Painkillers. Most of them have horrible side effects, Extreme dangers of Overdose, and are highly addictive as well! Plus there are all of those Anti-Depressants that, ironically, cause suicidal tendencies! THC is naturally found in our bodies, has few side effects of its own, and greatly relieves stress. I have heard of Many times when people have come close to committing Suicide, but changed their mind after a little bit of good Bud. Not only that, but even at the Black Market price of Marijuana (5-15 Dollars per Gram), it is extremely cost-effective compared to prescription drugs that cost Hundreds of Dollars per Bottle. If what I speak is the Truth, then why isn??t Marijuana more commonly used in Medicine?
The Prohibition on Marijuana has many negative effects in and of itself. We spend hundreds of millions of dollars a Year to stomp out Marijuana Use, but there has been no decrease in its usage. Quite to the contrary, Marijuana Use has actually increased. Most of the Billion dollar Drug War budget goes to fighting Marijuana. Marijuana use, over time, causes Slowed Brain Function, Lowered Sperm Counts in males, if Smoked it causes problems related more to Smoke Inhalation than to THC, and can sometimes cause feelings of Paranoia, which are Spawned from the fear of being Caught by the Police. Right now there is a Four Year Old girl being abused by her Methamphetamine Addict Mother and her Drug Dealing boyfriend. Why don??t those Billions of dollars go to stomping out that drug, which can be Created by anyone out of household chemicals, instead of something so Miniscule as Marijuana? Many times every day, Easy-Going Potheads are Burned by Black Marketeers and are getting ready to hunt those Treacherous Swine down and get back what is owed to them. If Marijuana was legalized, someone looking to get High could simply drive down to a convenience store, ask for a Gram of Good Herb, pay a greatly reduced price than that on the Black Market, and get High with no Consequences. The only thing that has thus far come out of the Prohibition of any substances is a Black Market to sell them right under our Governments noses. I??m not advocating for all drugs to be legal for, with the exception of Marijuana, Illicit Drugs are Illegal for a Reason. But why not take a large Chunk out of the Black Market, and Take Over their Racket to our own profits? Is it really Logical to keep something Illegalized simply because we think it??s connected to Crime, when it only is because we made it illegal in the first place? Is it Logical that several states have Already decriminalized possession and use of Marijuana in small amounts, yet the Federal Law allows the DEA to overrule the states? ??Any Powers not Specifically Granted to the Federal Government in this Document is Given to, and Only to, the States Themselves.? When, in the Constitution, did it ever State that the Federal Government had the Ability to infringe upon States?? Rights? Why don??t All of You think about what I??ve said Here for a few minutes, and Reconsider your Opinion on Marijuana law in this, the Glorious United States of America.

ok, a few things. one, alot of unnecessary stuff is capitolized, but its not like ur getting a grade on this so i dont think it matters, two, i think the conclusion should be a little more powerful. if someone who isnt exactly the sharpest pencil in teh box, read this, tehy might have a hard time understanding exactly what your facts are saying and take it as a biased opinon. a good powerful conclusion stating basically that "posion is legal but natural herb isnt" would be better in my opinon. otherwise, its increidble, do you give permission to anyone who wants to use this to spread teh knowlege?

about the capitalization, that's my writing style and also how i show emphasis on words. read it articulating the odd words capitalized, then it'll make sense.

No paper's ever "perfect." I'm about to run (not literally) right now, but I'll be on later and if you want I can help touch it up a bit then.
Oh, by the way, we spend more than "hundreds of millions of dollars" on marijuana prohibition. We've been spending an upwards of $40 billion a year on this "war on drugs" turned "war on marijuana", aka The Return of Reefer Madness.

Rights? It is Legal for a person to drink Alcohol to the point of Death, but it is Not legal to smoke a less harmful, completely natural Herb.

I hate to burst your bubble--
It's a very mediocre paper, man. You have a plurality of things to fix and a lot of work to do.
First off, it's generally not powerful enough. Who cares if all your facts are right, it's not attention grabbing. As mentioned earlier by some poster, a paper, especially one this long, needs to grab a reader. As the cliche saying goes, it's quality not quantity.
Second, there seems to be some subtle contradictions in your paper. Swearing off alcohol and tobacco, and how unjust it is that those drugs are legal and then constant glorification of the US-- your praising a country that's apparently dumb enough to outlaw an herb and allow a poison.
Oh, and for those who really pay attention, habitual adulation for this country gives off this impression that true Americans agree with you, and anybody else isn't quite as worthy. It's subtlety.
Third, don't ever defend a point by blaming another. It's almost cowardly to say marijuana should be legalized because legal drugs are worse for you. Preach as to why pot should be legal, not about why OTHER drugs should be illegal.
Fourth, cite the sources you borrowed from. Nobody's going to listen to a pot advocate guilty of plagairism.
Fifth, good papers make a point, not compromises. Take out all statements like, "true, pot can be as bad, but..." or "marijuana, over prolonged use will affect your health just like..." Admittance of fault renders your point weak. It seems like you might even be concealing facts. Your goal is to change minds. Instead of saying, "ODing on weed would require 22 pounds", say, "it is physically impossible to OD from smoking marijuana."
6th, Make this paper MUCH shorter. It's boring. I'm not talking about grammatical mistakes, but it's just... dull. Fix it up, make it much shorter, stick to concise, positive statements.
---
That's all I can think of off the top of my head, but I'm being honest with you. Don't distribute this paper out, it needs tuning.

Nice job. I think that your paper is very well written. You may want to look at another means of spreading around your information, however, because nobody's really going to listen to a pothead that's littering his school or community with his propoganda. Just my two cents.

I might be misunderstanding you, but if your refering to the paper,I would like to meet the shallow individual who was convinced of anything by such a poorly written paper. Christ, take some criticism, don't just blow it off. 99% of the people who read this won't give a shit about what you have to say so at the very least, fix your paper.
Think about it-- I'm FOR pot legalization, and your paper didn't convince me of anything... imagine somebody who's against legalization?
Be real, you think you can write perfect papers in one shot? Honestly man, thinking this paper will do anything short of pissing off some faculty members is absurd. Listen to criticism before you listen to your supporters, or at the very least before you pass this thing out.

okay this isn't a paper meant to sway anyone one way or another. it's meant for someone to have all the facts before them, and then make an honest decision of their own. i've shown this to hardcore anti-pot people, and as long as they weren't busy laughing in my face for being so extreme, it made them think a bit. and yeah the subtlety about giving glory to this Country so many time was meant to sound slightly condescending. quit judging it as a persuasive paper, it's a research paper with slight overtones of persuasion. to zooted999: the paper's there, take the liberty of fixing it yourself. if you think you can handle it without messing it up, that is. already no one belives me that i did this myself :( they think i cheated. and plaguirism is only a problem if i take things word for word. all the research for my paper came from everything i've picked up and looked at the past few months. and one last thing, if i were to get to zealous for my point, i would conceal more facts. i didn't conceal one fact for why weed should be illegal. i even held back some things that are good about it, like industry (paper, rope)

I find it extremely ironic that you clearly want advice, yet you ward off the only 2 posters who gave you any sort of criticism. I was under the impression that posting your paper here was so you could get some feedback, and it seems that anything short of praise, you deny. I wanted to help you out, but it seems you'd rather ignore the problems.

we'll see void, we'll see. the first step to getting a law changed...is to create a buzz around it. if everyone on this site made massive amounts of copies of this paper (and zooted's if he does one) it'll show the government and lots of people that one of their laws is...well...wrong.
Oh yeah we'll see, and if I went to a press conferance where George Bush was giving a speech and went naked with 3,000 other naked people and made a buzz about it, I'm sure we would prove to the government that clothes are overrated. You'll see, maybe then I can type up a high school status essay on why clothes are overrated.

Okay, this is my final take on this.
I understand, at 15 years old your convinced you can right a wrong all by yourself because the world, although sometimes messy, really is a just place where Democracy overrules any unfair laws.
I'm sorry to have to be the one to break it to you man, but I would venture out and say that 99% of the time, this isn't true. Individually, you can't make enough noise to change anything besides your curfew hours-- understand that, to change a national law, you need millions of supporters, not just your friends from high school.
I'm asking you to look at this rationally, and take as little offense as you can:
1)You refuse to take the only criticism you get, and this from SUPPORTERS. What about the people who are actually AGAINST legalization?
2) You won't admit fault to something as trivial as plagiarism. This sort of immaturity will cause your point to be overlooked. The fact that your only 15 doesn't help.
3) Just because the paper might be a good paper for a 15 year old, that doesn't mean that it's a good paper overall.
Finally, there's this:
Do you know what makes a good activist? Someone willing to pay for what he believes in. An activist capable of change is the one willing to serve life in prison, be publicly denounced and/or be willing to put aside anything he's worked for, just so that he can support what he believes in. Honestly, are you willing to risk jail time which would consequently damage your chances at a stable job? Are you willing to put aside whatever your parents have done for you simply so you can follow something you believe in? Somehow, I don't think so. I think it's easier to sit back, write one essay and claim to be an activist-- this is fine, by all means, we need open-minded people willing to speak out, but be realistic... understand that your more likely to get drug tested for such a paper than to actually change the mind of even 1 anti-pot person, let alone the national law that plagues this country.
Be practical. Be rational.

the reason alcohol and tobacco are still legal is because of big business. think of how much money the big alcohol and tobacco companies rake in a year, then think of how much tax is placed over both of them. alcohol and tobacco will never be illegal as long as they're popular enough to bring in billions of tax dollars

P.E.N.G.U.I.N.
10-12-2005, 08:47 PM
my solution is print this version and spread it. I DID NOT PLAGUIRIZE ANYTHING! when i worked on that essay the only internet window i had open was for the cannabis.com boards. print this version, spread it. then i, or whoever decides to take over for me because they think they can, will make another one with more information. it's hard enough to get people to read 1 page, let alone 5 or however many pages it'd take to write about every aspect of marijuana. so, unless the pessimists keep giving me shit, i'll keep going. oh, and zooted, i know i can't change the world and that it's very unlikely that my best efforts are going to get up to Capitol Hill. but...you've gotta take into account that this will catch the attention of people with better brains and bigger balls than i, and maybe they will do something about it. I need your help for it to get anywhere out of Tooele, UT though, and i don't think the One person who will eventually take the final stand and legalize marijuana is one of my peers. so help me out
