I'm new here so take it easy on me. I'm setting up a room so I can help some friends out and myself with medical use. I'm going to use clones so that is covered. I'm not going to use hydroponics but the standard way as I like to think of it in a 5 gal pot. I've done a lot of reading and it seems the best is a Metal Halide1000w ballast with a (blue) 1000w blub to veg. the plant and I'm looking for a 940W conversion blub to flower. I know lots of blubs use the same technology in making them but I would like a consensus on what make is best Phillips, Hortilux, etc. I have a friend who is going to teach me the ins and outs of what he has found from his trial and error. But he has his oppinion on what is best I would like some outside oppinions also. I don't like the hoods or reflectors he is using I like the square retangle kind better than the round ones. The square seems to put out more light then his. Am I wrong here? OK now I need to know what kind of reflector I should get there are so many. Is venting through the hood the way to go? It seems that there would be a lot of wieght to pull up when I need to raise them by hand. He uses fans and 8" tubing to push the air around on the floor plus regular fans on stands and a 8" tube at the top of the room to suck and vent the air outside. OK now what kind of fans with tubing should I get and what size 6 or 8"? He uses CO2 by turning off the fans and just turns the CO2 on blowing around the room for about a minute then turn the fans back on in about 15 minutes. I wondering if I should get the CO2 system with timers?
OK now where do I find all these items. I have searched the net and I can't find the particular ballast I want Diamond model DMH1000 and the 940w NH940B(F)CE conversion blub is the one he suggests to use. If there is better or cheaper ones that works great let me know. InsideSun (or bulbs hydroempire) doesn't have what I want but have read here that what they do provide are good. They don't have a 940 w conversion blub. Now is this conversion bulb a HPS? I do know it is a Metal Halide ballast Hortilux 940w BT37 conversion bulb I read that on the box when I was there last but it didn't say it was an HPS. I would like to use an HPS they seem to work better a better yield as I have read.

Is all HPS bulbs long and not the bt37 size?

OK I think that will be good for now.

Any help would be greatly appreicated.

Thank you all for all the info you can provide.

WOW... uh......
hang a 1000 watt bulb.. HPS or MH.. does not matter.. seriously it doesn't if you have never grown before.. just get a glass cover for your light fixture and make sure you hang it properly.. (i would recomend HPS)

then get a bunch of 5 gallon pots..(4-10) mix soil with perlite... 70% soil - 30% perlite..
this will prevent over watering which a lot of newbies DO!!!

put your clones in the soil...

Keep the light 24 inches from your pots...

lower the light 2 inches everyday... get the light as close as you can to the canapy (tops of the plants).. if your hand can't take the heat, niether can theplants.. this is a great test..

get tons of air flow.. ocilating fans, exahust fans... and people who talk a lot...
if you have adequate and proper airflow you should beable to get the light within a couple inches of your canopy... lower light slowly over time so plants can get aclemated

keep the light on 18 hours a day.. when your plants are 12 inches tall, take clones..

wait 1 week.. and then flower (12hour light, 12 hour dark)

you will have a shit load of weed!!!

good luck and easy on the bulb stuff..

I love you

Garden Knowm thanks for your info, can you tell me why I move the light down on the plants until I'm inchs away "to get the light within a couple inches of your canopy"? I would say to get as much light as possible but wouldn't 12" be good enough enough light?

Why doesn't light (MH or HPS) matter if I haven't grown before? What I read MH for vegging and HPS for flowering? Are you saying I won't get a good results from my 1st trip out so it doesn't matter what I use? I want the optimum experience so I want the best advice. That's why I asking all the questions from the masters.

Yes watering is important and feeding with Nitrogen a couple times a week right? Watering everyday but not too much water keep them wet but not soaked not to worry. Yes and lots of air flow.

I love you too Man

Every 12 inches, the lumens froma light get cut in half.. maybe this isn't true...

BUT---- a BUD/NUG that is 2 inches from your light, will be 5-10 times bigger than a bud that is 12 inches away.!!!!!!!!!!! di you hear me... 10 times BIGGER!!!!!!!!

Like lady said.. if you can use both. do it.. but.. if you are new and want to do some great growing... get a 1000 watt hps.. a coouple good gfans and growthepplant until it is 10-15 inches tall.. then clone that LADY... take cuttings, lots of cutings.. let her recouperate for about a week, until she is 12 inches tall... NOT TALLer..

and then start to flower..

NO you DON'T WATER EVERYDAY...

you water heavly and then wait until the top 3 inches of soil are dry.. then you water heavly again..

aim to keep room temp 75 degrees!!!!!!!

NOW YOU KNOW!!
i love you

you want to move the light closer over a week period of time (even though there is no such thing as time)... This will give your babies time to acclimate to the intese lighting...

having - lights close to your plants, with adequate airflow is the single most imporatnt thing you can do for your plants...

Thanks everyone for the advice on how far to put the lights and watering but I was asking for an
1) oppinion on what brand name (bulbs) is better if there is one?
2) what kind of ballast to get (1000W)?
3) good brand name of fans and size (room size of 12'x17')?
4) what kind of hood and model #?
5) CO2 blown from the tank or using a CO2 system with timers?
6) where to buy lights(websites)?
7) Does any of this matter or not?

everyone has an oppinion I would like to hear them. Thanks

BetterGrowHydro... I give them an A++

As to what to buy; honestly, I buy the costliest shit around. If there's a $100 ballast and I'm comparing it to a $400 ballast, it's a now brainer. $$$ = quality (usually)

First I ever heard of that. My shades are 22 inches away. Any closer and the tops of my plants will burn.

22 inches... wow...
But don't you have 8,000 watts...

And don't you flower your plants when they are 5 inches tall?

If you get a good amount of air blowing between your lights and your canopy you should have no problem lowering your lights..

22 inches!!!!! Doesn't sound right..

Is that how far away they are when you start growing... and then the plant grows up to the light?

It was your spelling that was off.... it's "grow", not "groe" No problems.

As to the 'Dead or Alive' turtle thing from Garden, just watch out for him. When I've got my grow, he's going to use a picture of it as his avatar! You'll see. He loves me. I know it. As I've said before, there's nothing that can penetrate the bullet-proof turtle shell!

I give you this for reference:

The idea is to get your lights as close as possible with out burring your plants. That is why you have a temperature probe to installed at the top of your canopy to monitor the temperature under you light at the top of the plants. That way you don't burn them up from heat and they get as much lumens as possible even the lower parts.

Thanks The "groe" was a miss print do to fat fingers. After writing this I tired again with the search but this time I put the words together bettergrowhydro and did find the bghydro site and found lots of valuable info but again the best ballast is the same as most other sites 1000 MH SSI so I guess that is the one to go with?

So that takes care of question #2 now I just need the other 6 questions answered if possible.

thats sites prices are ridiculous compared to insidesuns

I just back to check if the prices where that much of a difference and BetterGrowHydro was cheaper by $20 on most items. As Turtle said you get what you pay for so he is right it's a no brainer. BetterGrowHydro has a better stock also more of a selection with a better description of what you are buying. I'm still looking for a better price but so far BetterGrowHydro is the best. If anyone has someplace better to go let me know. I always look for the cheapest for the best.

I'm looking at the customized kit under 1000 MH System with the Cool SunGro reflector, 1000W MH SSI ballast, 1000 MH Hortilux Blue bulb and the 940 HPS conversion Hortilux bulb for a total of $650. Sounds like a lot but InsideSun doesn't compare with the quality of any of the hoods and as I said the ballast were $20 more plus the bulbs were $20 more.
