Do fans like that create a lot of noise if attached directly to the outside end of a box? If they do, any suggestions on silencing it? It's not that I want to hide anything, it's just I prefer to have my grow box somewhere in my room and I have ADD so if theres light leaking or too much noise comming from it then I'll so sleepless the entire growing time. :( I'm crossing my fingers right now hoping they're pretty quiet. Please someone make me happy.

Thug,

Hello fellow ADD-strained Human Stoner :)
I have no experience with the Dayton fans, or the fart fans... only normal floor/pedestal fans. I can't tell you if they'll be very loud (the Dayton and the fart fans), but dude, they ain't going to be quite. There are people (Better Grow Hydro, amond others) that sell 'mufflers' or 'silencers' for the air system.

Initially, my cabinet was going into the closet of my room... but after thinking about, specially that, noise - that cabinet is going into the closet of the other room. Remeber, you're not only going to have the fans making noise... you're going to have the air pump(s) and the water pump(s)... if your setup has them.

Here's a pic: I went looking for fans, and in the local hardware store, found one of these fart fans... it's 8"... and I snapped a pic of the box... you can read the text. In the right of the box, you'll see kind of a 'noise level rating'... Well, that fan, aparently is noisy as shit.

I have an idea for less noise: I still haven't tried it, so I'm not sure if it'll work (less noise), but here it is::: instead of using 'fart fans' and the kick-ass Dayton fans, I'll be using normal floor/pedestal/wall-mount fans. The ones that are 16" or 18" (typically). Now, I'm going to take one of these fans, and build a carboard box (yeah, like the one Harddon is talking about when he says "creepy school kids"). This cardboard "box" is really a cone that goes from 18"-->4". You can do it any size (18"-->6"). Again, I'm not sure how this will work out as to noise levels, but it sure is cheaper than the fart fans.

Other interesting thing, CFM: I don't have measurements on the pedestal fans (18") levels of CFM, but I'm fucking positive that it's 4-6 times (at least) more than the fart fans. The fart fan I uploaded in the pic has a CFM rating of 180CFM... and those are ideal conditions... ducts, corners, elbows, bends, etc etc all wreak havock in the airflow. Fluidynamics (yikes!)! Thank god and the angels for the MaryJane, or I wouldn't have been able to make it through Fluidynamics in college... and forget about Fluidynamics 2 without chronic! lol

I hope this helps.

PS: I didn't upload the pic because my WiFi router is made by Belkin, and it's the biggest, costliest piece of mother fucking shit in the planet. Belkin, FUCK YOU!

The reason I believe it is quiet is mostly because of this box build.

That person did so much work to make that box super stealthy and I don't think she/he would have spent all that time making it look like a simple desk if the exhaust was making enough noise you'd think a hurricane was comming (especially for 24/7 running). I really want to go with one of those fans simply because of space. I will not have enough room to fit in an 18" fan plus the cardboard box crap (lol) and the control/motor sections of that fan. Thanks for any info.

Hey Thug,

I saw the box... and now I understand... definitely, if he's using that fan, it can't be making shitloads of noise...

As for your setup, go for it man... it's a proven and kick-ass fan. As to my situation::: fortunately, I'm able to do the big 18" fans (or 16") and all the cardboard crap and stuff...

Let me know how it goes dude! :)

After reading a whole bunch of threads on OG about those fans I've come to the conclusion that they make a considerable amount of noise due to three following factors.

Vibrations
Echoes
Air Movement

Most the people have suggested the following to take care of these.

Vibrations: Most have the fan simply sit on the floor of the chamber. To have it hanging from something (strings, cords, etc.) would eliminate the vibration factor due to the strings absorbing all the vibrations and not transfering them to what they are connected to (typically the ceiling of the chamber).

Echoes: This noise is basically the noise that the machine itself makes regardless of if you're holding it in your hand or if it's drilled to the floor. Knowing people in my family who are into sound equipment and studios I know theres a material used in Car Audio that is called Dynomat that you can line the walls of the chamber containing the exhaust fan in. You can also use other things ranging from a cork type material to styrophoam to egg cartons (the cardboard kind).

Air Movement: This noise is caused by the airflow itself and doesn't really create too much noise in itself. But if the exhaust fan itself is connected directly to the ouside of such a box then you would probably hear it (and you also wouldn't be able to have it hanging from strings if it's touching the outside). This can be fixed by adding ducts or something to connect to the fan to then bridge the connection to the outside.

Also another thing that people pointed out was that if you get a bigger fan it would make less noise if pushing the same amount of air as a much smaller fan. This is because of the bigger fan needing much less RPM to match the smaller fan hence reducing the noise level.

The reason I'm pushing the silence factor is mostly due to completing the perfect stealth box. Of course people would notice a ginourmus bix sitting in my closet, but that's not what I'm talking about. What I'm talking about is that if done properly, when you approach this box, you will not smell anything (maybe fresh air from carbon scrubber), you will not see anything (no light leacking), and you will not hear anything. This in turn would allow for growing without ever needing to take up too much space or be annoyed by certain parts of the grow.

Thanks for any ideas/comments.

Man thats an awesum grow box....

that is cool.

those squirrel cage fans make a racket.

You can go to home depot and get the inline 6 inch fans...they are fairly quiet...as quiet as you will get unless you run 10 comuter eshaust fans.

You can hook a variable speed control to it also. They have low static pressure so dont try and push them thru too much...

other wise, thats about as quiet as you gonna get.
