Whats the general view on antidepressants here? How long exactly do they take to work? Is there a chance of them working after one pill? Or is that just a placebo until a few weeks have passed?

No they don't get you high, but they do stabilize your moods, and you are able to get through the day feeling sane and normal. I took the anti-depressant Zoloft after both of my pregnancies, as I suffered from postpartum depression. They take about 1-2 weeks to kick in, and it really works. I was much happier while I was on them. There are sexual side effects with Zoloft though, and you feel really numb down there. But, it suited me just fine because believe me, sex was the last thing on my mind following the birth of my kids. I was on it for probably 1-2 months and then I slowly weaned myself off of it.
Limpbizkit did make a good point though - smoking weed makes you happy as well. At that point in time, I wasn't able to smoke because I was breastfeeding, but as soon as that was over, I smoked a bowl and boy did I feel happy :)
There are many types of antidepressants, and some don't have sexual side effects. I think Wellbutrin (sp?) may be one of them. Go see a doc and have him give you the options.
Good luck.

I was prescribed Lexapro and took it for about 3 weeks before I stopped. A friend of mine made me realize that those kinds of pills create a horrible psychological dependency. He told me that I could look at a piece of fruit and tell myself that eating that fruit would make me happy, because that's basically what those pills do to people.

It's like you take them everyday because your mind believes that you can't be happy or go through life without them. <---- and that's bullshit.

So the fact that i accepted all my problems and was no longer depressed, the day after i took my first pill, is just a placebo effect?

Alll antidepressants are differant. Dr.s prescribe them for differant reasons. I have MS, (multiple sclerosis). One of the symptome is depression. It is very real and not something you can just shake off. In my case there is a chemical imbalance in my brain from the lesions the MS causes.

Lexapro is known to cause some dependency. Zoloft had hardly any side effects nor did I feel dependent on them after I quit taking them. the only thing was the sexual side effects. Anti-depressants DO work, it is the only thing that got me through post partum depression. It was the best thing I did for myself. I personally believe that you should only take them if you're in a situation that's causing you excessive stress/worry/fatigue. Just to help you get through the tough phase. Then you should definitely wean yourself off of it.

Unlike a joint, they last more than just the time of the high. You can't live life high.

Antidepressants don't fake emotions. If you are genuinley sad, you will still be sad. They just remind you how to be happy as well. They allow the seratonin to get back to the brain, where it was once not allowed.

I'm not taking prozac, i'm taking an SSRI.

I posted about this on another thread, but you simply have to be careful when starting an anti-depressant. Monitor your moods and attitude closely the first couple of weeks. If you notice disturbing changes tell your doctor immediately. They make countless numbers of medications and if one thing doesn't work for you there is no cause to give up. MOST PEOPLE experience side-effects on the first anti-depressant they are prescribed. Usually it takes 2 or 3 medications before you find one that works without side-effects.

Always, always talk to your doctor before starting or stopping a med.

WRONG. i used to be on lexapro and it just made me a walking zombie. id much rather smoke everyday than have to take an anti deppressant. and thats exactly what i do, i smoke everyday and every chance i get. balances me right out.
