I don't know how many of you use Hushmail. I've had quite a few Hushmail accounts; I get them for different reasons but then it takes so much longer to log in to the site that I don't use it that often and then after a couple of weeks my account expires, so next time I need it I just make a new one...
The reason it takes so long to log in is that first of all you type in your email address in the box on the home page, then every time you log in it takes you to a page that's asking you to upgrade to a premium account, like they don't like people having free accounts. To skip that shit you have to click a link on that page, and you're taken to a new page which says something about how the applet is loading, please wait, it may take up to three minutes. So you sit there for fuck knows how long, depending on the speed of your internet connection, until, finally, a box pops open asking if you can trust the source, or something, so you click yes. Then you're taken to another page which asks for you to 'enter your passphrase'. Then, finally, you can check your inbox. Compared to hotmail this takes way too long, and of course you can check your hotmail account without ever having to log in, just sign in to MSN.
Anyway, so I was wondering... Hushmail is supposedly secure, and alot of people (especially people in the mail order business and such) ask you to use a hushmail account to communicate with them, or they use one themselves. But is it actually secure? How do we know that all this encryption engine stuff isn't just bullshit? It might just be a normal email providor, they just make it appear to be really safe by using words like passphrase instead of password and 'authenticate' instead of 'OK'.
I would imagine that the chances of anybody actually being able to intercept or trace your hotmail account are extremely low.. so why go to the hassle of using something so crap as Hushmail?
So, what do you guys think?

Howdy GhostToker,
I wouldn't trust Hotmail to be secure from the feds,I'm pretty sure that Microsoft is and therefore Hotmail, quick to cooperate with the authorities. Convenient doesn't translate well to being secure..so when I want secure coms,I use encryption. I always have to kill several trojan attempts on the way into Hushmail,so that tells me the feds are there snooping around,I have a port protection program, that ain't one of the popular , off the shelf programs, that the feds have probably already compromised..I'm sure it frustrates them alot..lol.
The bottom line is that ya have to use encryption for secure coms, anything else may as well be posted in the public square. If I could afford to,I'd use a secure, anonymous proxy too..I just don't want to make it easy for the feds or anyone else...lol.
Have a good one !

Torog is right; if you're really concerned about your e-mail security, Hotmail is not the way to go. And even if you don't want to use Hushmail anymore, Hotmail dwarfs in comparison to Gmail. I use Gmail for all my e-mail purposes since I don't discuss sensitive or illegal activities in my e-mail. It's fast, easy, has no ads and you get more space than you know what to do with. I can send you an invite if you want.

I have a Safe-mail.net account, and use Mozilla Thunderbird to sign in. As far as I know encryption only works between you and someone else with an account that supports it. When someone with a safe-mail, hushmail or perfectlyprivate account e-mails me it will start with:
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
followed by the message itself, and PGP signature.

ermitonto, I did have a gmail account but I forgot it.. lol... if you could send me an invite that would be awesome. :)
Basically, i'm lazy. I want a safe email provider that you don't have to give a fucking blood sample to access. :)

Hushmail is legitimate and has gotten many words of praise from reputable encryption firms. Just look around. The hassle it takes to access Hush makes it very worth it, IMO. Going through several stages like it does makes it far more difficult to fake the login: signed ssl certificate, signed java applet. Being that every outgoing (and incoming if you are smart) message is encrypted means nobody is going to see anything if they were to glance at the message en-route. Personally, I am glad they are around.

Lemonboy you are absolutely correct !!
A few extra clicks are well worth the price of security.
...so you dont get squeezed (Pun on lemonboy, ha)

I agree wich ya jonny.....it is well worth it.
But I don't like the fact if you don't check it all the time....you loose your account...even though it's free.
It's such a fucking pain in the ass to create a new account all the time.
But whatever

exactly, likem..... I've had so many fucking Hushmail accounts; they're cool to have but they keep expiring! And they keep expiring 'cause I can never be assed to go through all the hassle of logging in.. lol
Anyway.
