mogul base metal halide socket

hey guys, i already have a reflector and a 400w metal halide bulb. i was wonderin if it would work if i just buy a mogul base mh socket and plug it into the wall. i know i suck with electricity... but don't hate.

I think you have to have a ballast to start up the bulb and regulate the power to it.
