Those of you that are looking into buying an X-box 360, which one will you buy? The one with the HD for 399 USD, or the one without the HD for 299 USD?
I'm getting the one for 399. One because I already payed for it. And two, because I know I will use more than one memory card for saving my games, and 2 memory cards adds up to the extra 100 dollars, that is pretty much infinite space. Besides, you get other stuff too, and the HD already has some games on it, and you get a free head set.

Do you know if the hard drive version will still be able to utilize memory cards?
also, we're always hearing about all the graphic and speed improvements, but I've yet to hear anything on AI. I don't suppose anybody's heard anything about more advanced artificial intelligence?

I have heard stuff about the AI. Well, Sony said that the AI is going to be a lot more adavanced than previously, and they said that like every NPC will have like their own programmed intelligence. So say you're playing a war game, some characters will choose to run, and some will stay and fight. That's the example they gave. Microsoft then said that the 360's AI will definitley compete with that. So as for AI IMO, it looks good. And for the HD memory card thing, yeah you still can which is cool for when you wanna take a file with you to your friends or something, that way you don't have to bring your whole 360.

Also the game developer are in control of the AI a lot. Some games, like TES IV: Oblivion are taking advantage of the AI upgrade, while others, I'm sure, will have AI that still only competes with the current generation.

elder scrolls oblivion will definately be the first game I get, I'm rather excited about that one. it was the first 360 games I'd seen, and I nearly cried at the sight of the graphics :D

the far reaching backwards compatibility is great, but otherwise we know squat about the system so far, so don't jump up and down just yet :(

Well, your spending alot of money on the latest friviality to come on the market, and your lining up to buy a limited production run at the sellers listed price, ahead of time....
I just think if you want a house, and a nice car, a business or an education based job or seomthing you really should think twice about what your doing when you sink money like that into a toy.

24th is my birthday this year. I wish I could get something like that for a gift still. But nah, I'm paying for it with my own money. And most def. man, Oblivion is going to be great. I loved Morrowind, I played the hell out of that game, and I still do.

No man, I have money to pay for stuff lol. I don't need more money to pay for my car, and I'm moving out in a year when I grad. and I'm fine with money.

You just just like going around busting people's balls, don't you? If the thread isn't addressing you or your interests, STFU.
As for me, XBox 360 looks really damn nice, but I think I'm gonna hold out for a PS3 instead. I'm a big big big fan of Metal Gear, and the fourth one looks a-fuckin-mazing....

true, but I think I'll eventually have both anyway :D I love gaming!
Xbox 360 comes out November 22nd. I will not get one seeing how I dislike microsoft and dislike that the xbox 360 will be packed full of DRM shit. Windows xp was the last Micro$oft product I will ever purchase or use.

one could argue the same thing for those who buy marijuana for recreational purposes.

I won't buy either edition of the new Xbox. I almost bought one (of the original) several times since it was released, especially after Live! was introduced. I have abstained because I have always considered console gaming inherently behind the times. I'd rather spend $300 to upgrade my graphics card every few years in my PC than replace a console. A console with absolutely no resale value I might add.
Consoles are quickly becoming simple, modular computers. I think it is a better investment to build one yourself at this point.

computers are definately better...if you have a fat enough wallet...i'm gettin the 400 dollar x-box 360 and am spending nearly 1/4 of the money i made workin all summer for it...it'll be worth it though...definately gonna pick up madden 06 and ball that against some chumps online...i already got my 360 pre-ordered so i plan on gettin the system at midnight then smokin a couple bowls and then ballin some madden all crunked up...i can't wait :D

i find the ps3 is a giant compared to 360 a joke.....oh how people know nothing about hardware
im getting $400 one just because all the accessories seperate are like $220,better AI is capable on 360 also, search around for elder scrolls oblivions AI every npc has its own priorities and does them how they want, they were having troubles with guards and stuff because theyed leave there post to hunt just because they were hungry and another time the whole town decided to eat at the same resteraunt and everyone got looted by a robber
personally PS3 offers nothing interesting to me,built in hub wtf i dont want that,7 bluetooth controllers again dont care, besides the controller looks like a double sided dildo

Some form of "artificial intelligence" effect is required in every game where you battle the computer. It isn't real intelligence, though, so I think perpetuating it as such is a mistake. Games make reactions based on user-input. This is nothing special. The Xbox, especially, is a nice piece of obsolete x86 hardware with fancy built-in features that have existed since USB was added to mainboards. I'm pretty sure I had a 166mhz Pentium with on-board USB...
By MS's own statements, the Xbox is gearing up to take a more central media role in the household, away from pure gaming. I'm just not interested in a console hacked together to play media center for $400 only a month before Christmas.

so sony is throwing in stupid useless features like 7 controllers dual 1080P displays(which is impossible for it to run, that would take insane memory bandwidth)built in hub, multiple usb plugs ect

CPU
misleading,SPE's have no branch prediction and can only handle speacialized data(ie vector processors) vector processes are about %20 of all game processes left to the CPU,rest is general data, vector processors speed slows down by %80,which means AI and physichs(general data) will be run on something similar to a 640mhz processor that can do 7processes at once
xbox360 side of the story is that it does have branch prediction, and they are general proccesors so they can tear through AI and physics code like butter, one might say it lacks vector capabilities but each of its 3 FULL FLEDGED PPC CORES(read spes arent full cores)have a VMX-128 unit for vector processing and allows the cpu to take a much less major hit on preformence
memory
xboxs 512mb of shared 700mhz ram may be slightly lacking compared to the 256mb 3.2ghz ram in bandwith department(specs show the 3.2ghz ram is on like a few GBps on xbox in bandwith)but the ram is high latency, and if ps3s cell has to make a call to the video memory it has to go through a north bridge to the gpu to the memory and back, where as xbox cpu and gpu can directly changed any data in the ram at any time without this latency loss
storage
not much here, neither console is standard HDD so it affects almost nothing
Display
sony-very misleading, sony did not say any game had to do any resolution what so ever, its up to the devolper to decide if they even want to go HD,and further more PS3 physically doesnt have the videp memory bandwidth to do 1080p not to mention 1080i
microsoft-720p is required by devs, this was stated, another thing is 4xAA is also automatically accomplished by the GPU,the onboard EDRAM has 256GBPS of bandwith and can handle Z-buffers without the main video ram being bottlenecked which is an extreme preformence booster, consider that that high resolutions AF,and AA can be used with less then 1/3 preformence hit then what would normally occur
Network
sony has 360 here on this one no lie, wifi isnt standard on 360
audio
no detail, but yes both do 5.1
disc media
sony-blueray does have lots of storage capabilites(well over 50GB can be on a disc) but 1x speed blueray drives are hard to produce now,95% chance ps3 will have a 1x drive, this creates tranfer speed issues thus loading issues and with no standard harddrive this is a big down
xbox-DVD9 yes can only use 9GB,but devs havent really complained any media can be compressed to fit this, majority xbox games only used 4GB and over the years it has shown that roughly from generation to generation the storage used doubles so most games will probably be 8GB in size,of course theres an anonomly of games that will use more
blu ray has a native transfer speed of 54Mbps (6.75MB) while DVD has a native speed of 11.1Mb (1.3875MB) thus it appears at first glace that the bluray drive in the Ps3 will have a transfer rate of almost 5x that of the x360, but wait, thats not true. the x360 drive runs at 12x effectively bumping that to 133.2Mb or 16.65MB nearly 3x faster than that of first gen bluray at 6.75MB.

forgot graphics
sony here is doing an odd approch, they are leaving the polygons processes up to the CELL insted of the GPU,this in turn means more load being put on an already struggleing processor, less room for advanced AI and physics
sony essientially is doing just what happend with ps2
ps2-claimed to be able to produce toy story graphics(basically render, like you know movies like shrek,no way playable)
ps3 is set up where the cell is going to be able to take polygon freeing up the gpu for more beautiful visiuals, basically THEY WANT PRETTY TECH DEMOS
as far as the gpus go,ps3 better shadeing capabilities, xbox better PLAYABLE graphics
tschmidty32
09-23-2005, 08:39 PM
so looks like in short...the xbox 360 will be better if you like shorter load times, better PLAYABLE graphics, and better games (mine and the majority will agree with me on the games part). Xboxy360 will be better.
