Well, my plan was to go to college next September. I was going to go this year, but I got offered what I thought was going to be a good job, and I chose that instead. But the job turned out to be the worst job and the worst paying job i've ever had in my entire life, and I quit.

So instead of waiting around for a year to go to college i'm going to go up some time this week and speak to a careers officer and see if anybody has dropped out or whatever so that I can start now. The year only started recently so I haven't missed much, and basically i'm not gonna get the kinds of job I want until I do this and then go to university.

Anyway, so yeah, there you go. :)

Hey Az, you're at Highlands now, right?

Az.

yeah im there at the mo....im also at hautlieu which is a bit weird and the people there are crap....but highlands is cool....

What do you think my chances are of getting in this late? lol

Az.

i honestly dont know...
i think it depends on what course your thinking of enrolling in...I believe its up to the tutor as well, wether they think you are going to take it seriously, catch up with the work you have missed etc etc
But there may be a deadline where they stop taking applications....

your best bet would be to go up there and chat to one of the careers people...

what are you thinking of taking?

Hmm.. well I gotta do the return to school course, you know? I think it's called the access course. Basically I wanna retake my GCSEs or get the equivalent of A levels to go on to uni.

haha

I don't think you will be able to start now.

You would probably want to start in the Spring.

Yes, absolutely get your but in school....

Just look at the 40 year old men walking arround that didn't get a college degree...Do you wanna be there.

There are exceptions to every rule.......and I don't think that college makes you smarter......but what it does get you is opertinuity.

You're making an exelent choice.

Even if you have to wait till Spring...

GHoSToKeR
09-20-2005, 07:51 PM
Well, I think the college i'm talking about is a different kind of college to what you guys have in the US. It's a smaller college and it offers less courses, and I don't think you get a degre there. Alot of people go to this college before going on to getting a degree... It's a higher Education College, if that means anything to you. Az. knows all about it, he goes there! lol

But yeah, I know I have to do it, it's just a matter of when. I could try and get in now (which will probably be too late to do but some people might dropped out or whatever) or have to wait another year, which I really don't wanna do, even though that was my choice.

Thanks. :)

i think youll only be able to start on the second session. u cant just enter in the middle of a session. which means u should enter there in winter if theres still places.

i started college 1 month ago and i like it.

anyway good luck man

I think you can enter into it...but, I'm not sure if you'd have to pay for the whole cost of the semester, or what...but if you can pass the finals with a half-semester of notes, then go for it. Go back in January, it will make your New Year's Eve better.

and I don't think that college makes you smarter......but what it does get you is opertinuity.

It makes you smarter by juggling your schedule and making you think in class. It gives you a chance to get the opportunity.

It won't get you a job. But if you can complete school, you'll have a world of options.

thats true but if you have to go to a class to be made to think you proubaly shouldn't be there.

I suppose it does help with time management......but that can also be learnd at work.

To say education makes you smarter would be wrong. True, it does cram you full of facts and figures, and it does help you to understand a lot of different concepts, etc, but I believe that intelligence is something you're either born with or without.

But at the end of the day, does it make any difference? If you're born not so smart but then get a high level of education, are you any different to somebody born smart but with no formal education? Hmmm.... I shall meditate on this. Actually, i'll make a thread on this because i'm bored. :D

Thanks for the replies, guys.. :)

Hmm.. well I gotta do the return to school course, you know? I think it's called the access course. Basically I wanna retake my GCSEs or get the equivalent of A levels to go on to uni.

I'm not sure of all the qualifications they do
bnut the course im doing is AVCE, i know they also do GNVQ which is a much lower qualification....

my year was the last year they are doing AVCE (which at the end of 2 years gets you 2 A levels) and they are now doing BTEC instead which consists of just coursework (no exams) and it gives you 3 A levels after 2 years.....

you can also re-take GCSE's there if you want...(i re-took my maths GCSE last year...

However if you become a student at highlands....you can apply to go to hautlieu and do AS/A2 levels....so if you wanted an A level in say....psychology (as i do) you can apply to go to hautlieu (as i am) you dont have an interview its almost like they automaticly allow you to go,
i asked whether i was going to have an interview a week before term started and they were like "no you dont need one".......

but yeah as i said i dont know of other qualifications they give you other than
BTEC (3 A levels....was called AVCE which gave 2 A Levels)
GNVQ <---i dont know much about this other than it doesnt reallly qualify you for very much other than to go onto a AVCE/BTEC course...

hope this helps
:)

I always think of it like this: Our brain is like a computer's hard drive. Some people have bigger hard drives than others and some people have faster CPU's than others. Education is just what's loaded on to your hard drive and can come from college or from life.

If you can't get in this semester I suggest learning from life while you wait. Do some travelling, maybe experience a different culture. You won't regret it. I waited several years after I graduated from HS to enter college and value every minute of it. Not only did I have a better understanding of the world around me but I also really knew what I wanted to do when I did go back to school. Anyhow, if you can't get in try to find some way to make the time off valuable to you.

And then again, some people's hard drives are clearly infected with a virus ;)

Thanks for the advice, Fengzi! I appreicate it, man!

The problem I have is that, for certain reasons, I didn't get the GCSE results I was capable of getting, and it's really starting catch up on me.

I don't know if you American guys know about GCSEs, but they're the only real exams you take in our equivelent of High School, Secondary School. You do the main subjects, such as Maths, English etc, and you get to choose a few subjects you also want to do on top of the standard ones. The results you get in your GCSEs literally effect what you can do for the rest of your life, unless you want to retake them, which some people do. Your results effect what jobs you can get and what higher education you can go on to, such as college or university.

Anyway, I was predicted getting all [B]A* (A+), A and B grades, but because of circumstances I fucked up, and didn't care. Now it's starting to catch up with me because i'm sick of having shitty jobs that I have no interest in. I find it hard to hold down a job because I get so mind numbingly bored with all the jobs I have that I lose interest (losing interest is a real problem for me.. lol) or because i'm sick of being belittled by 30 year old, single men who have absolutely no future other than bossing around people younger than them for crap money for the rest of their life. I know this sounds ignorant and arrogant, but after a while I can't put up with it. So, instead of trying to stick out these kinds of jobs for the rest of my natural life, I NEED to retake my GCSEs, get the results everyone knows i'm capable of, and then go from there.

Anyway, so yeah. I don't really have much choice in the matter. Well I do, but it depends on if I wanna struggle with crappy, meaningless jobs for the rest of my life or actually do something I enjoy and make good money in the process. Plus I love to learn, so it should be a trip! :p

Okay so it's a community college!

And yea, I have that effect, man! haha :)

Getting stond and reading books all day for a living would be ideal. But alas, I can only do that in my spare time.

I wonder why I keep using the word alas?

ive got a kid headed to college very soon, she is in last year of high school.
next fall .
ghost i dont know of your situation ect, family whatever but as a dad i can say this,Keep your ass in touch with those you need to,its a big worry that we dont hear much from the kid,and a big help to them to know your thinking of them and if your in touch regular, they will rest easier.

here is a idea
buy enough postcards to write ya mom every week, pre address them, you can scribble a note to let her know you thought of her,
example.

hi mom,
