Hi All,
My first post here. New to 420 and had a question. Does it help with mild depression? I'm usually a little depressed and was wondering if it would help. Haven't smoked yet, still looking for a connection, but wanted to know other's experiences with it, if any. I'm hoping it will help pick me up a bit.
Thanks.

I think marijuana is the kind of plant that you'll get what you ask of it.
If you believe that marijuana is something that makes you less motivated, depressed, etc, thats probably what you'll get.
If you believe that marijuana will mellow your mood out, and you believe you can be productive and functional while having a good stone on, thats what you'll get.
I know smokers who are successful, savvy, and organized, who smoke before doing housework or important tasks with no difficulty, and they smoke everyday. I know other smokers who smoke also everyday, however its in their dirty house, and they are depressed and unmotivated where doing even the simplest of tasks is difficult for them.
For me personally, I do believe weed to be a natural anti-depressant. I know others who strongly disagree, I really think it depends on the person and the attitude going in.

I find it very hard to control depression with weed. It is it's nature to cause peaks when consumed. These peaks can be comforting but they don't last forever forcing you to consume again. You want something that is going to make you feel better in general and won't produce a peak and valley effect on your moods. I would see a doctor and just be honest with him about your issues. Depression is a serious medical condition that should be treated by a doctor.

I'm BiPolar, and found that MJ is a FAR better mood stabilizer for me than any of the damned prescriptions my shrink has put me on. When I'm manic, it brings me down enough to be able to concentrate. When I'm depressed, it brings me up enough to seperate myself from it. If I'm depressed about a particular situation, I'm still depressed, but at least I'm able to see past right now and think of possible ways to change my situation. If I'm suffering a clinical depression brought on by my illness rather than a situation, it brings me back up closer to middle ground. I've also found it to work WONDERS for me when I have an anxiety attack. My prescription anti-anxiety meds just make me go to sleep. MJ alleviates the anxiety, but still leaves me functional, and I can clean my house, cook dinner, etc. This doesn't work for everyone, though, since it affects everyone differently. My sis also has severe anxiety, but when she smokes, she gets so paranoid it only gets worse for her.
My advice, if you care...if you are trying MJ for medicinal/psychiatric use, have a trusted friend nearby the first few times. If you are depressed, there is a chance it will make you more depressed, and you'll want that friend there to help you through it.

i think that if you are depressed you need to change your life style not just smoke pot to make you forget about your problems. what you need is a sport you can get in to. a better job/school and maybe a new group of friends because usually if your friends are happy then your happy. i think that if you have depression something like mushrooms or more activity during the day would be better. but marijuans is one hell of a great drug

Cannabis is probably a bad idea if you suffer from depression. Supposedly, Chronic use will cause your dopamine receptors to (temporarily) atrophy, causing you to get less pleasure from "life". This is the reason that not smoking weed when you've been chronic for a while sucks and makes you irritable.
I would recommend picking up an active hobby like hiking or juggling or something like that.. Maybe get religion. I don't know, I've never had a problem with depression, I guess it probably shows.
You might try Kanna, it's a natural SSRI.. Quite potent, though, so careful.
i wish i could go to china hahahahahhaha bahahaha...not really i think id get scared and run away... but asians make me laugh ahahhahaha

I have been on anti-depressants for years now. I will admit they help a LOT. But somking weed decreases my depression even more. And who ever said it will just make you want to smoke it more and more....it's not like that for me....although even if it were who cares?? I smoke once or twice a day. It makes me have a completely new outlook on life. Now I think my life rules. I am happy with who I am.

My husband is a chronic depressive, bad enough that he is on SSI for it. He has found that sativa types of pot are better for depression than the couch-lock indicas. He starts getting depressed and I stick a joint in his mouth and all is good. We both are medical marijuana users - I had a head trauma as a child and have 24/7 headaches unless I'm smoking. We gotta legalize this stuff, folks. The goverment spends $4 billion on prohibition--couldn't that be better spent in Louisiana and Texas? Write or email your congresspeople.

"I think cannabis has a lot of potential in the treatment of mental illness," says Lester Grinspoon, emeritus professor of psychiatry at the Harvard School of Medicine. He says that it can be an effective treatment for bipolar disorder and depression.

...well sure the marijuana will aid your sadness...for a limited period of time...until it has become smoked up, only then will depression fluctuate into something heavier, because a common withdrawal symptom released by marijuana is ironically, a depressed/uninterested (urge to smoke a shitload more) type mindset.
So in the end, it will become a cycle,
You Smoke.
You Stone.
You Burnout.
You Depress.

it can make you really happy while ur "high" n your depression will just vanish, sure thats fine. but with some people like me, the after effects can make your depression 100x worse n the only way to feel better is to smoke more and stay high...or jus cope with it till it fully wears off.

So the final answer is it depends on people...it depends what you are looking for, it depends if you have a tendency to abuse, it depends of your philosophyn life, it depends of your age...
personnally it helped me a lot, as i saw things out of the path of my every-day life...Pot will affect you in the way it should, so if you are still depressed after smoking, it's just not for you and you should stop smoking it...But on the other hand, prepare for a good mental ride and happy toking!
-Peace out

It helps my depression...one word of caution, however: if you use it for depression, and you run out, you will get REALLY depressed.
