I've spent HOURS reading every thread in this discussion and others. My mind is melted. You give give some damn good advice!

Here is what I need from all you grow grow masters out there. I want to grow 2 Northern Lights plants. I want keep it very simple as this will be my first time. Not interested in spending massive amounts of cash on a first try. But I'm not interested in massive failure either.

What is the basic kit one will need to grow? I just want something in my basement that will get me started. Can one grow with a few seeds from seed direct, a pot, some soil from Home Depot, a water jug, and one light? Do I really need complicated fans and wooden boxes?

Like I said, my mind is melted from reading everything. I tried to figure out what I needed without posting this simple response.

SIMPLE is GREAT

2 - 5 gallon pots..
1 - 400 or 1000 watt bulb (if you have the power and can afford it you really should go 1000)
Good dirt
watering can

start growing : )

The power? How much more will the power bill be a month for a 1000 compared to a 400?

Don't I need two different types of lights? One for vegetation and one for flowering?

floro cool tubes are ok for vegging...
CFLs would be better... just get the right spectrum
MH would be the most efficient, but also the most
initial cost... and the hottest...

HPS is a good light for blooming...

if you can get an HPS it would be suitable for
both stages...

if we are really keeping it simple...

get decent soil... not miracle grow...

otherwise, just some big pots and good water...

its tough to say how much a 1000 watt bulb will be in energy costs. But in San California, a 1000 watt bulb costs about 30-40 bucks a month to run.

An HPS light is fine if you want to keep it simple. (High Pressure Sodium)....

You will want to make sure your water is PH'ed at 6.5 - 7.0.
You can purchse a ph test kit for a couple bucks at the hydro store...

this is a perfect simple kit..

and if you wanted to grow Hydro, simply replace the soil with straight perlite(even the self watering units are good but ice cream containers are just as good) and feed them hydro nutes, a great yield with no Rez heat/cooling issues.
I have no pics of that style of growing, but beleive me, it works if you have the time to spend a few minute every day giving them a water, the self watering units are ideal if you want to fuck off and leave it for a few days
