Anti-rape condom aims to stop attacks
Thu Sep 1,12:02 PM ET
KLEINMOND, South Africa (Reuters) - A South African inventor unveiled a new anti-rape female condom on Wednesday that hooks onto an attacker's penis and aims to cut one of the highest rates of sexual assault in the world.
"Nothing has ever been done to help a woman so that she does not get raped and I thought it was high time," Sonette Ehlers, 57, said of the "rapex," a device worn like a tampon that has sparked controversy in a country used to daily reports of violent crime.
Police statistics show more than 50,000 rapes are reported every year, while experts say the real figure could be four times that as they say most rapes of acquaintances or children are never reported.
Ehlers said the "rapex" hooks onto the rapist's skin, allowing the victim time to escape and helping to identify perpetrators.
"He will obviously be too pre-occupied at this stage," she told reporters in Kleinmond, a small holiday village about 100km (60 miles) east of Cape Town. "I promise you he is going to be too sore. He will go straight to hospital."
The device, made of latex and held firm by shafts of sharp barbs, can only be removed from the man through surgery which will alert hospital staff, and ultimately, the police, she said.
It also reduces the chances of a woman falling pregnant or contracting AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases from the attacker by acting in the same way as a female condom.
South Africa has more people with HIV/AIDS than any other country, with one in nine of its 45 million population infected.
Ehlers, who showed off a prototype on Wednesday, said women had tried it for comfort and it had been tested on a plastic male model but not yet on a live man. Production was planned to start next year.
But the "rapex" has raised fears amongst anti-rape activists that it could escalate violence against women.
"If a victim is wearing such a device it may enrage the attacker further and possibly result in more harm being caused," said Sam Waterhouse, advocacy coordinator for Rape Crisis.
Other critics say the condom is medieval and barbaric -- an accusation Ehlers says should be directed rather at the act of rape.
"This is not about vengeance ... but the deed, that is what I hate," she said.

I think it's a good idea, but I find it very sad that women has to wear one of these to protect themselves. It will treat that rapist like the women would feel. Tearing open his third eye, I'm for it!

Well what happens when you get some vindictive man hating bitch who wants revenge for being treated like shit by some asshole you don't even know and will never meet? A guy I know was accused of rape by this girl after he dumped her, he was arrested and everything, but he was released when the cops found out he had been in another country for the entire long weekend in question. This product has its merits (and personally I think rapists shoult be castrated ) but you can't set out to intentionally hurt someone its against the law( As is rape and Ive already made clear my feeling on that hatefull crime)
But for all I Know that news item was a wind up.

That's a good point. This device won't take your dick off though, it will just, slice it up a bit. And if some bitch did do this, I'd get one of these rapex things, turn it inside out, and give her taste of it.

No different than carrying mace or a knife or gun to protect against potential attack.
It is fully legal to leave your house with the intention that if someone tries to hurt you you are going to fuck them up. Its called self defense and security of person.
Sounds like a great idea to me. Anything to deter and help apprehend these sick bastards.
Although I think rather than surgical removal of the thing they should just yank it off like a bandaid, dump some alcohol on it and send him to jail.

Controversy in South Africa over device to snare rapists

A medieval device built on hatred of men? Or a cheap, easy-to-use invention that could free millions of South African women from fear of rape, in a country with the world's worst sexual assault record?
Dubbed the "rape trap", trademarked "Rapex", the condom-like device bristling with internal hooks designed to snare rapists has re-ignited controversy over South Africa's alarming rape rate, even before plans for its production were announced in Western Cape this week.
Some say the inventor, Sonette Ehlers, a former medical technician, deserves a medal, others that she needs help.
The device, concealed inside a woman's body, hooks onto a rapist during penetration and must be surgically removed.
Ms Ehlers said the rape trap would be so painful for a rapist that it would disable him immediately, enabling his victim to escape; but would cause no long-term physical damage and could not injure the woman.
Some women's activists call the device regressive, putting the onus on women to address a male problem.
Charlene Smith, an anti-rape campaigner, said it "goes back to the concept of chastity belts" and would incite injured rapists to kill their victims.
"We don't need these nut-case devices by people hoping to make a lot of money out of other women's fear," Ms Smith said.
But Ms Ehlers contends that South Africa's rape problem is so severe women cannot wait for male attitudes to improve.
"I don't hate men. I love men. I have not got revenge in mind. All I am doing is giving women their power back," Ms Ehlers said. "I don't even hate rapists. But I hate the deed with a passion."
The United Nations says South Africa has the world's highest per capita rate of reported rapes - 119 per 100,000 people. Analysts say the total, including unreported rapes, could be nine times higher.
Ms Ehlers sees her invention as particularly attractive to poorer black women, because they often walk long distances through unsafe areas to and from work. She foresees women inserting the device as part of a daily security routine.
She said a majority of women surveyed said they were willing to use the device, which will go into production next year and sell for one rand (20 cents).
Ms Ehlers said she was inspired after meeting a traumatised rape victim who told her, "If only I had teeth down there."

Once some rapists get their dicks cut up on these things, the rapists will inspect the women's vaginas before plunging in. If the woman IS wearing one, they will beat, rape and/or kill her.

Yes, that is legal. Anything over 5inches, just the blade, is illegal. I carry a knife with me too for protection. Pretty sad if you ask me. But people here punch other people out over nothing, so...

in the US some states do have laws regarding blade length for hidden pocket knives. if you have it displayed, you can carry a machete though heh. Anyways call the police dept, or a lawyer or somethin in the area and ask for the local laws.

i think its a stupid idea. for it to be effective the women would have to wear it everyday. and like people in africa can really even afford it. if your a girl, stay out of a bad neighborhood and carry a weapon.

THats a disgusting device that while the intended use could be awesome, the potential for abuse is horrible. Simply put, start castrating every rapist you find. If the punishment is so horrible, most people will learn not to do it. Don't make the women responsible for "being in the wrong place" or "not carrying a weapon". Beat the shit out of the dumb prick males that think this is an acceptable practice. If they wanted sex that bad, fine they made their choice, chop it off so they can never have it again. Or, as a first offense, brand it on their foreheads for everyone else to see, like the scarlett letter.

The law USED TO stipulate a blade length as a measure for an illegal weapon as apposed to a legal size to carry.
That has not been the case for a long time. I actually called the OPP to check this one out for myself some time ago.
The law states that any knife any size is considered a weapon once it is concealed. How it is handled by the police is determined by their assessment of your state of mind, intent, and the situation leading up to their involvement.
If you carry it openly it is perfectly legal even if you carry a damn sword. You may be stopped and questioned so the police can assess public safety but if you are all cool youre good to go.
I found it odd since carrying a big ol blade on your belt in plain sight is more likely to cause a disturbance than a concealed one.
The size used to be 6" blade, with no stipulation as to handle /butt length but that went out more than 10 years ago.
This is Ontario law. Once you use it in self defense you can only use it to secure your person enough to remove the harm to allow for your escape and must not be used unless other means are not viable ways to protect yourself from the threat. Your level of force also must be in response to a similar level of force. You cant stick a guy for punching you. Stabbing is considered deadly force and you can only use a knife to repel deadly force or if you have reason to fear your life.
Oh yea...no butterfly knives or switchblades allowed
I used to carry one on my belt for protection years ago until I got jumped by 4 guys when I was in a leg brace and on crutches and the fuckers got it off me. I was so goddamn close to a stab in the lungs when one of them stopped the guy. Since then I dont carry shit that can be used against me. Wise words. Nobody can use my own body on me so I rely on it instead.

That was invented in the US in the 80's, when our inner cities had a similar epidemic. Nobody used them then because it was like walking around with a dildo hanging out of your joy tunnel.

Good point. We finally agree on something! :p
I don't know how I feel about this device... potentially it could protect hundreds and thousands of women all over the world, which we all know can only be a good thing. However it does have the potential to put the woman wearing this device in even more danger than necessary. At the end of the day, it's not up to me to decide if these things are 'suitable' or not because i'll probably never know the trauma and agony one can go through due to being raped.
