In California, specifically the Bay Area and Los Angeles, it is never shocking when gas begins to near the $3/gal mark. At my local gas station, it was $2.99/gal when I drove by today. I miss living in Houston where gas was $1.30/gal heh.

It was up to 6.17 a gallon here in Atlanta.

In Montreal yesterday, it reached $1.35 per litre, which would be about $5.13 per gallon, and that's regular unleaded gas... I need to put at least 93 octane in my car, so I pay about 1.45 a litre

Howdy FLESH,
Daggum..what kind of car do ya have that needs high octane gas ? Usually high octane gas is for high-compression engines and high-performance motors. Does yer owner's manual call for high octane gas ?
Have a good one ...

What is the purpose of getting high octane gas? I've always wondered does it improve performance of regular cars? What exactly does it do?

It is pretty much the exact price here in aus per litre but premium unleaded is more.In one car we have its old and takes super which is the leaded petrol because cars that are older than 20 yrs can use regular. But super is cheaper but worse for the environment.

I hope to God you are kidding with us. If you are joking, for future reference please keep in mind that most people on these boards are prone to bouts of paranoia, namely myself. So based on your post, I'm going to trade in my SUV (I know it sucks for the environment so keep your comments to yourselves) for a scooter.

For fuel to combust it needs an Oxygen level so it can ignite..
Basicly theres More Oxygen molicules in hi Octain fuel so it firers Harder at the stroke..
BTW..regular unleded petrol here in Australia is $1.20 per litre exprcted to hit $1.60 soon..

Think about it! This is all a huge scam by the oil companies! What percent of gas does the US actually produce? Like 3% or something, and out of that 3 percent like maybe 10% was damaged in the hurricane so therefore shouldn't gas prices go up by .3% (very negligible amount). So WTF why are the prices skyrocketing? Because every one of out nations leaders has money invested in oil companies and they dont give a shit if were gettin ripped because it just makes them richer.
I think we should have a fucking revolution and guillotine these shitbags!

Howdy dazen,
High octane fuel is used for high compression engines..like the ones that can be found in sports cars and race cars, also aircraft motors. Chrysler used to make alot of high compression engines..the Hemi,is a high compression motor, for instance. It can improve somewhat, the performance of a regular compression motor, but you'd need to change the spark plugs out with some 'hotter' plugs..to git the advantage. There's also a danger, that the motor ain't esigned to handle the hotter combustion temps that high octane fuel generates and damge could result..like scorching of the cylinder and valves,as well as the pistons. Back in the '70's,we used to put 93 octane fuel in our hotrods, along with a gallon or 2,of 'jet' fuel, which ran about 104 to 118..I think. I hope I helped to explain better.
Have a good one !

I worked it out, 3.78 litres in 1 US gallon X GBP£1 X 3.78 US$1.84= US$6.95
US$6.95 per gallon we pay
So if i did it correctly that's how much we in England pay for petrol, sometimes slightly less, sometimes slightly more.

You're all complaining about petrol, we pay just over double what you're paying right now, & that's normal here!
This country sucks!
