Well i just got a suspened license for not wearing a seatbelt and speeding that happened a while ago. So it is suspended for 90 days starting Sept 1st. I am wondering if buying a radar detector is really worth it? Are the chances of the Cops reading the radar detector very likely to happened? Whats a good trusting one to buy?

What's up oreo...here's something I actually know a little about. I too had problems when I first moved to SC. Seems like there's a pig on every corner in this town. So, one of the first things I did upon my arrival was get a really good detector. After much research I found that one of the most important features is POP detection. I'm sure you're aware of how a few of the coppers now-a-days love to hit the POP button on their BEE radar units and boom, that's it, you're nabbed. Well...Beltronics makes two Vector models with POP detection. It's a great feature and will improve your chances of detecting those suckers nearly every time. I myself bought the Vector 995 model from Circuit City for $300 since it was rather inexpensive. Here's a link to beltronics' site and the same model:

http://www.beltronics.com/vector995.html.
I also decided on this model because it's software upgradable meaning I can send it to bel in the future and get it upgraded for free. Of course, it sports every other feature there is and looks pretty sharp to boot. Check out the link and maybe even do a search on eBay to see if you can save a few bucks. Good luck and keep that hammer down bro!

Defs:
Reprogrammable Processor (Software Upgradable)
Using the latest technology in "flash" microprocessors, the Vector 995's software is upgradable to address new threats in speed measurement devices.

POP Radar
Short radar bursts too quick and short to be detected by non-pop capable detectors - fairly new and not used widely. Still very dangerous

Or you could respect the safety of the other drivers and pedestrians around you and just take your lumps and drive safely instead.
You may well be a pro driver but there are sooo many people that are not and when one pops out in front of you and youre zipping along at warp speed all your good driving skills are not going to make you stop.
Speeding is not worth the lives it costs families everyday.

Although I am guilty of speeding, I gotta agree with FunkyMonkey to a certain extent. A little speeding at 3 A.M. fully sober on the freeway will never really hurt anybody. But going 50 in a residential at 3 P.M. on a warm sunny day is just ridiculous.

Anyway, what radar bands are the cops around you using? Make sure you get a quality detector that can detect all bands. Nowadays, the real high-tech cops can detect radar detectors as well.

but as far as detecting those pigfuckers its a totally good investment we have some sneaky pigs around here

Well..i do respect the laws, the only reason why i got pullled over was because i was late to class so i was speeding to school and bow i got caught. Im a delievry guy first of all so i kno not to speed in any residential area BUT i still need a detector because im often on the highway to go pick up my girl whom is carless at the moment. Im not trying to get one cause im a speed demon or a racer, i need it sooo when im driving on my restricted license(lincense i get so i can goto work and school) if i get pulled over when im not at work or school they will suspend me for a year...so ya that would suck...it sucks, dont tell me to obey the laws because i have no choice, i have to drive theres noway around it. Im not sure yet about buying one yet but thats why im asking

on New Years i took part in a very long road trip, it stated with the 5 hour drive from North Bay ontario to Guelph Ontario where i crashed at my place, the next day i then had the 10 hour drive from Guelph Ontario to Westchester NY, crashed at my gf's moms house and the next day me my gf and a few friends did the 20 hour drive to New Orleans. We brought along a radar detector because its a long ass drive and going 10-20 mph over the limit WILL save alot of time on such a long trip. Anyways the thing worked fine and i would recommend that they really only be used on long trips. If your worried about getting nabed they are only illegal in some states and when you enter said states they always make sure to tell you to turn them off (atleast on the way from Westchester to New Orleans). Like i said the thing worked great but i would only use one to shave a few hours off of a very long trip and if you plan to use one to drive at ridiclous speeds then your a moron (thats a general statement). Also along the way i noticed that a GOOD portion of this road trip had the roads watched by the air from helicoptors and the like, in which case im pretty sure a standard radar detector wouldnt work worth beans (their were always big signs stating such, i love signs).

Before investing several hundred in a radar detector, check your surroundings and your police force to see if it is even worth it. If they employ state-of-the-art detection methods, it probably won't do much good buying a detector. If your PD is slightly behind, by all means.

Tru, Fairfax County VA is a very populated area, too many police, i imagine that they have up to date technology with all the money around here...

What if the cop with the radar detector also has a radar detector detector ( I dont know the technical name) Just an option to consider.

If the guy who hit my father wasnt speeding, or drunk for that matter, he might not be dead today.

Just check with your local laws to make sure it's not illegal to have one. Most places it isn't.

A good radar detector will be able to detect something like 80% of cops sitting on the side of the road. But just remember, if a cop pulls up behind you while you're speeding then hits the radar gun, obviously your detector isn't going to be able to pick that up fast enough for you to slow down.

If you drive on the highway often and prefer the fast lane, it's a good investment. But even with a radar detector, it's about 50/50.

Couple of points...if you're doing 50 in a residential...you don't deserve a ticket...you deserve to have your license revoked. I've got 2 little ones and if I see that shit I'll personally take your license and your balls! Additionally oreo...detectors are illegal in VA so if you get caught with it, no matter how much dough you spent...it's gonna' go down the tubes when they take the damn thing from you.

I think we can all agree that speeding is not the "right" thing to do in any situation, however, getting pulled for doing 6 or 7 mph over the speed limit because some pig is trying to meet his fuckin' quota is just bullshit.

Nuff Said! Be Safe!

Yeah I agree with a few kms or mph over the limit on highways etc. Hell on our 401 its damn dangerous not to be going 10 km over in the slow lane! When I hit the fast lane I pop up to 30 over and hit cruise. My thing is I play it cool till I find a few people clockin at a good pace and let them get ahead enough that if there is a speed trap theyll either hit their reds or get nailed. I use them as my radar detector.
In town I dont speed at all, not 1 km over. Too easy to get into an accident.
On my street I dont tollerate it. Im like the fuckin one man neighbourhood watch vigilante on my street. My neighbour had a teen buddy who loved to peel out and race down the street, sometimes the wrong way, regardless of if my kids were out front or not. 1st time warning, 2nd time threat, 3rd time I yanked his ass outa his car when I caught him at the light and pulled him onto the street and told him I was going to make sure he understood quite clearly that he would not speed like an ass on my street again or I would go animal on him. Some neighbours pulled me off and hes been a good boy since. I was planning to slam his gear hand in his door and break his fingers. His rubber marks came within feet of my kids. Im not a big man or a violent one but when it comes to my clan and my castle Im a fuckin wild dog.
I dont need to lose anyone else to assholes so I get kinda hot about it real fast.

anyway. Just relating why I feel the way I do. Not forcing it on you just offering it up for consideration.

Just obey the traffic laws. I drive the speed limit and everyone I litterally mean everyone passes me, but I don't care because they are not going to be the ones paying my ticket. Plus you use less gas, and that means driving the speed limit is better for our environment!

Sorry to hear that Funky...i dont speed in neighborhoods like i said, specially with all the kids around and plus if i did i could lose my job. I am on the highway a lot and thats what i am the most worried about running into cops. Cops are always trying to get someone on the highway so i have to watch out. When im at work i dont use the highway so i will be fine since im getting a restricted still.

FunkyMonkey

Yea , I wasnt necessarily just directing it at you since you posted about highway speeding. I kinda figured though that the thread would attract a lot of views and many opinions about speeding and it was a good opportunity to pass on some real life stuff to maybe make even one person think twice about how fast they are going to head home or off to work etc.
Thats not to say that Ive never been a teenager buzzed on acid racing down the qew with the needle buried driving like a nascar driver trying to get home before my buzz hit too bad for me to drive. Ive done some dumb ass shit and miraculously never hurt anyone thank god. (12 or 13 years ago)

401 is a joke i hate driving on it, my sister lives in london and i hate the 2 way trip, where ever i go when i drive i just follow the speed of traffic, unless its late at night and im on back/major roads. not in residential areas
