View Full Version : Worried about your memory?

I'm not a huge toker, just been smoking at very least a bowl a day for a year now, but I've noticed that my memory is SHIT now. I've never had the best memory, but seriously sometimes I try to think about shit that happened years ago, weeks ago, even sometimes days ago and it's all cloudy and I can't remember for the life of me, and this is while I'm sober too. Christ, sometimes I can't even remember something that happened a few minutes ago.

This isn't the worst thing in the world, but it would suck if my memory got progressively worse because of weed, especially since I'm a college student and remembering the answers on the tests can be quite helpful sometimes. Do any of you worry about this or notice your memory getting worse? Christ, I'm afraid I'm going to get alzheimer's someday, now that would be very depressing and tragic.

The possibility of getting alzheimers from weed worries me too, there's really been no study's on it that I've heard of. all I can say is the brain attrophede's and has greater chance of alzheimers from lack of use, which is why they say you'll have a considerably lower risk if you read a lot, learn instruments, etc.

but, from the sounds of it you're just permafried, as I have been at times too. just go off for about a week, and about 3-4 days into that week you should be back to normal. however, I know how hard it can be when you've become accustomed to smoking every day.

Weed will only affect your short-term memory with lots of usage. My memories still fine, and i have been smoking everyday for a good 4 months now lol.

It's my 10 second to 3 min memory. Makes me so mad sometimes.

My view on the matter is that Cannabis only effects my immediate memory. For instance, i'll be sitting on the couch watching a movie, and i'll get up to go take a shit, while i'm on the crapper, I can't remember what movie was I was just watching. Eventually it comes to me, it just takes alittle longer for me to remember. I know i'm not going to be smoking all my life. Once I have kids to raise, i'll have to give it a rest. So i'm really not too worried about my memory.

mrdevious is right...your just permafried. If you smoke weed every day, your body never really goes back to "sober" beacuse of the amount of THC thats constiantly being added to your body and mind. The effects of one smoking session can last up to a day afterwards...thats not staying high, just a cloudy or spacy feeling that lasts for hours after your intial high is over. So all you have to do is just stop for a week or so, and you will feel your memory comming back and a true sober feeling again. I have smoked ever day solid for several months at a time before, my memory and everything got really bad, and I just had to stop for a few days to get back to baseline, and my memory became clear again. Also, if you're in college trying to get a degree and everything, mabey you shouldnt be smoking everyday? Try to smoke less often and you will find you mind will stay alot clearer. Sorry that was long, but I hope it helps.

ive smoked for over 30 yrs now and have never had problems with memory unless i am streesed out about somthing or preoccupied with a good or bad thought that is stuck in my head..that whole weed messes up your memory thing has never actually been proven..nor has any of the other rumors about negative side effects from cannibis use ..the fed's know this and that is why they have steadily refused to allow legitimate researcher's to conduct any study's ..and is also why the DEA is being sued this year by researchers trying to prove once and for all that the govt is wrong on this issue and we are right...

Jim, you've been smokin 30 years so i'll ask you. Are your colds more amplified due to smoking? acouple weeks ago, it started out as a scratchy throat, then it turned into a cough that lasted about a week and a half. And i was coughin up so much plegm. this isn't a 'worried' question, it's just an informative question.

Actually, Nixon set up a commission to research the effects of marijuana and advise him on what path he should take regarding its legal status. The commission gathered much empirical data and concluded that the potential harms are not significant enough to justify the laws against them and that cannabis should therefore be legalized. An angry Nixon threw the report out without ever reading it.

Check out this shit!!

Nixon wanted a "Goddamn strong statement about marijuana ... that just tears the ass out of them." Shafer was never appointed to the federal court. Nixon's private comments about marijuana showed he was the epitome of misinformation and prejudice. He believed marijuana led to hard drugs, despite the evidence to the contrary. He saw marijuana as tied to "radical demonstrators."

He believed that "the Jews," especially "Jewish psychiatrists" were behind advocacy for legalization, asking advisor Bob Haldeman, "What the Christ is the matter with the Jews, Bob?" He made a bizarre distinction between marijuana and alcohol, saying people use marijuana "to get high" while "a person drinks to have fun."

He also saw marijuana as part of the culture war that was destroying the United States, and claimed that Communists were using it as a weapon. "Homosexuality, dope, immorality in general," Nixon fumed. "These are the enemies of strong societies. That's why the Communists and the left-wingers are pushing the stuff, they're trying to destroy us." His approach drug education was just as simplistic: "Enforce the law. You've got to scare them."

I've been tokin for 30 years also and don't have any memory problems....unless I'm really fucked up! :D

i saw that..the laguardia report from 1935 said the same thing ...the feds have known this all along and still have continued to arrest and opress weed smokers in the us..i think every one involved in the war on drugs should be tried as a war criminal and should be punished accordingly...that means every cop who shot an inocent person in a botched drug raid should recieve the death penalty and the politicians who have kept the funding going for this assinine war should be given life in prison...and the informent's that have profited from the war on drugs should be deported ....preferably to beruit or some other fun in the sun kinda place ..

yes ...i think it's actually better ...i smoke when i feel like it and when i need relief from my arthritas ..when i was younger i was using weed and many other drugs to escape from problems that i should have been dealing with and as a result of doing that i ended up using harder drugs..it wasnt the weed that lead me to use them it was my running from problems that needed confronting that caused me to seek out more ways of escaping reality..now that ive put that behind me and dealt with those issue's i can truly enjoy the weed instaed of depending on it for dealing with problems that it isnt intended for...

I have trouble remembering events unless something strikes the memory, I also get mixed up when it comes to remembering who said what. Like the other night I was thinking of a conversation I had with somebody and thought I must have dreamed it until I finally remembered the person several minutes later. Might be from the pot, might be from the ecstasy, who needs a memory anyways.

Other than that I have always been able to remember alpha-numeric strings, passwords, combinations and the like quite well.

right on ..a idle mind is a useless mind....and exercise does help with memory....i had a work related injury a few yrs back and was stuck in bed for like 8 weeks and by the end of that period my mind had turned to mush from constant use of pain killers.. and television... the more you just sit around in front of that idiot box and veg out the more your brain is going to shut down...lack of good mental stimulation and physical movement will do far more damage to your memory than cannibis ever will....

Like ezjim, I'm a long term smoker-23 years. When I was young I'd smoke morning, noon, and night, and couldn't remember shit. Now, however, I pretty much only smoke at night and don't have any problems remembering things. Except, of course, things that happened while I'm stoned.

My guess is that weed really only effects your memory when your under the influence of it. It just seems like its killing your memory when its really just surpressing it. Like me when I as young, I suspect that many smokers are in a contant state of either being high or being burned out. Maybe not always high but never really fully clear headed either. Think about it, we all know we do stupid shit when were high like forgetting where the lighter is when we're really holding it. Well, if we're high for 70-90% of the day it's no wonder that we think we've totally lost our memory. Right?

Who knows, maybe I'm totally wrong. It just seems logical to me. So I wouldn't............... uh.......what what the question?

Nice feedback guys. My memory issues are mainly stupid little things that happened minutes ago.. but sometimes I worry when I have problems remembering certain things, events and people from just a few years ago. I should take a few days off... but I know I won't. I've been trying to clean up my life a bit (smoke way less if not quit altogether, actually work hard on school so I can graduate) but I always end up falling back into these patterns... smoke everyday. I even see a school counselor.

But anyway, I go back to college in a little over a week, so of course the first week will be spent partying my ass off (finally out of the dorms we are, ... shall be toking up in our houses and whatnot) but after that I plan to really buckle down and work on my studies so I can get my English degree. I want to only smoke on weekends and maybe a few weeknights (not DAYS like last year when my grades took a nosedive) when I'm done with homework. Heh, sorry to ramble guys... once again thanks for the feedback.

i'm with you, man.
the instant you tell me something i can forget, but maybe that's because i'm not listening...or not.
i've always been good at remembering where things are and stuff of that nature, but recalling moments in history of my life is a little more difficult...sometimes.
