There are no laws in science, there are only theories. A theory is a tested hypothesis with positive results which are only refuted in the 0.0005% category (ie: NOTHING is technically considered impossible, just so implausible that the thought of basing an assumption or your life on it is incredulous).

The word law is used to explain to laymen that its "almost immutable" because if you say the word theory they automatically dismiss it as unproven (which it of course has already been, ie: Theories of thermodynamics (not laws) , Theory of Evolution (sorry evangelicals its time to suck it up and deal with it ;) ), Theory of electricity, etc , etc, etc......

(I apologize once again for the long winded rant ;) , well long winded compared to everyone else :) )

Well said. The reason anybody calls scientific theories "laws" is because there is a big difference between what the word "theory" means to a layperson and to a scientist. Laypeople often use the word to mean a guess about why something is happening. If it is proven, the layperson does not call it theory, he calls it fact. But in science theories often have huge mountains of evidence supporting them, and we can be almost certain that they are fact. Creationists like to use the argument that evolution is "just a theory", implying to the layperson that it is merely a hypothesis about how species might have come to be. It is indeed a theory, but so is the idea that the Earth orbits the Sun.
