Guys I have been up and down through all the message boards through out the net lol,and there are so many opinions out there about lights, growing, ect.
So I want to see what people here on this board think. You have heard all the hype about hoods, reflectors, how they reflect all the light down wards and they increase the light available for the plants!,and so many people recommend them! but yet there are those who say hood/reflectors create radiant heat on the up side which is not good for your plants! then some say just hang your bulb verticle over your plants paint grow area flat white/or mylar!.....................
The arguement is:
a light with a hood reflects more light towards your plants but a light hung verticle over the plants with a good reflective source on the walls and ceiling can match the hood or reflector in lumen's????
So there you have it, anyone got any thoughts on this?????...Personaly I thought a hood or reflector would be the way to go! am I right? am I wrong?...what do ye think?

well either is fine its just about maintaining temp in the ur space... but yeah i think hood reflectors are superior due to the fact that they reflect more light, but should only be used in a well cooled area..

actually, you want lights hung horizontally...I have 2 lamps and 1 is vert. MH
It has served it purpose, but when i removed the hood and let light bounce all around, I saw faster results with my grow...another thing is that when you strip all the hoods and hardware from your lamp, you can move it around easier and also, you can switch from vert. to horizontal lamp/bulb...I'm going with the Agrosun Gold MHbulb w/enhanced red spectrum, this is better for all around veg/bloom growing...hope this helps
P.S. you can't turn a verticle bulb on it's side +or- 15 degrees it will blow up, you have to buy a horizontal bulb

Can you take a horizontal bulb and hang it down wards? or same rule applys?

true, especially for enclosed growrooms, but hey my plants are bedside so i can look at them when I go to sleep :) so ya kinda need the reflectors for situations like mine unless you wanna go blind

Can you take a horizontal bulb and hang it down wards? or same rule applys?haven't run into that problem, so haven't researched it, but, I think there is bulbs that can be mounted both ways.

Lol. Actually no my lighting schedule is fucked up plus I'm in Veg. right now so It's 18/6... Kindof a pain in the ass to get around if you ask me.. But just looking at my little babies lulls me to sleep. For some reason all my dreams lately have had to do with harvesting, I wonder why? :D

Check this out,my grow box is about 4 1/2 feet wide and 5 feet long! the height is 5 feet 6inch's,I have a 1000w hps for flowering, the bulb is hung inside the hood running horizontal, all the walls are painted with flat white as I mentioned before heat is a little problem, which I am correcting as we speak.
#1 Do you think in a grow box that size i could do without the reflector hood, would the lumens remain the same? or should I keep the hood?
I figure I could probaly lessen the heat by removing the hood! and just let the bulb hang!................but if I am going to lose a big amount of lumens maybe I should keep the hood?,,,,,,,,,I plan on getting either a ac unit in the next week or so,or make my own fan with glass for the bulb.....do you think if I removed the hood my heat would reduce alot???? here are a few pics.

Note: I only close the doors when lights go out! NEVER WHEN LIGHT IS ON LOL.

first, that is a great growbox to remove the reflector...you just have to put reflective material on your ceiling to reflect the light downward
It will be brighter than it was when you had the feflectors...if your lights are low, I mean early in grow when plants are small, you can build/fabricate a lightweight frame that you could wrap in panda plastic(my favorite, reflective material) and hang it 6"-12" above your lamp, depending on how cool your fans get temps in there around the bulb. I have a small $5 wallyfan about 2 feet away pointed right at my bulbs and I am flowering my main kolas 9-12in away from the bulbs...
2nd my temps went down 10-12 degrees when I removed the hoods. :) hope this helps you out, nice little area you have there, luckier than most.

Mellow...

First thanks guys for the info much appreciated
So Harddon there is a problem using clear containers for soil grows? if so I had no Idea! could you be kind to enough to explain why?
Now that I think about it,I know hydro containers if not darkened by duct tape or painted black ends up having algea form on the grow medium on the inside, but never knew that the light would have a effect on my roots in the medium of soil!,just for the record I never came across a bad fungus or algea inside the bottle or even the bottom of it????????????????..........but if the light slows growth or causes problems by all means update me please!
One more question for anyone with the knowledge, would it be o'k to hang my bulb verticle? will the bulb blow I ask this because latewood mentioned that a verticle bulb can't be hung horizontal unless specified may blow!,do you think my bulb could hang instead of having to run it only horizontol?

overgrow have a vid with an experiment half the room with reflectors half without, the side with the reflectors, higher yeild bushier, bigger plants, the side without, where smaller half the yeild, so reflectors seem 2 b key
