View Full Version : What to do if my plant ends up male?

Well my first "real" grow is coming along nicely. My plant is 2.5 weeks old, very green, kinda skinny, but new leaves are sprouting every couple days. I am only growing one plant at a time because I don't have the $$ or resources to grow multiples at a time. At what point do I see what sex my plant is? If it ends up male, can I do something to make it turn into a female or make it smokable once it buds? I have put a lot of energy into this grow and I talk to my plant and am getting attached. It would be very disappointing if this grow was all for nothing. Also when do I switch from light all the time to 12/12?
One more question- Is it my imagination or can I smell some skunkyness already towards the tip top of the plant? Thanks for any help!!

sorry, the news is bad.. all male plants are to be destroyed ASAP : (
it is sad because we do get attatched to our babies... but you will hate yourself if you keep a male around and it pollenates and impregnates your bitches....

once you get a female strain you like you should clone it so that you are gaurenteed females from then on....

yes you smell SKUNK!!!! : )

good luck

if its a male u have a few possibilities:
1. trash it and start a new plant and pray for a girl.
2. grow it and save the pollen for future references. it may just so happen that you love the strain of pot you got. so save the pollen incase your short on seeds and want to make a nice bundle of them with a female.
3. ummm not to sure what else you can do.......ummmmm be creative with the leaves lol? make a salad i duno. hell you can dry the big leaves out and make your own hemp cigar or sumthin.

peace

First rule of growing is: never get attached to your plants :p, you will end up hurt.

Okay, well you know, males happen. There are a million more seeds so don't get dicouraged and try again. But, unfortunatly, you can't change the sex of a plant, to my knowledge anyways.

But, if you do get a male, I wouldn't grow the whole thing out. I would chop it as soon as it showed and start a new seed right away. The male plant has very, very, very little THC in it. So what most people do, is chop it down and throw it in the hash bin for when they do a next hash or oil run. But trying to get THC from just 1 male plant would prove to be a waste of time. Male plants don't orduce buds, they produce pollen sacks containing pollen, that contains no THC.

To be 100% sure of the sex of your plant, you have to wait until about 2 weeks into the 12/12 cycle. That is the only way it will show its true sex. Also, when the plant is mature, it will show you pre-hairs, but I find they can be misleading at times and find it's best to wait until 12/12. Mature time varies for different strains, but mature is full grown veg, maximum veg time.

You can switch to 12/12 whenever you want. But you have to remeber that the plants size at the end of 18/6, will double, some evenb triple in height by the time it's done flowering. So if your plant is 10inches when you decide to switch to 12/12, it will be approx. 20-30inches by the time it's done flowering. Look at your height restrictions and do the math.

Good luck.

Thank you for the advice everyone. How do I clone my plant if she is a she? And should I transplant yet? The pot it's in now is about 6" across and 6" deep. I am going to be very upset if it turns out to be a male and all was in vein. :(

you need an expert on cloning here and i am not one i am afraid but since i see you're online and you might get this message and study a bit, then i would suggest you to go on www.overgrow.com and do a research for cloning....
i've never done it but, is not that hard to do...

check this link and learn how to clone from one of the BEST!!!!!!

Bad, I know this sounds bad but you really should not keep a male around.. you will end up regretting putting so much effort into something that gives so little return and can possibly ruin a future harvest by pollinating females...

can you post some pics of your plant.. If you pant has 3 or more nodes, there is a good chance we can sex it for you..
