I see a lot of sites that are really inexpensive, but I am conflicted as to whether or not I ought to order a bong off the net using my credit card. What would you guys do?

just make one man! get a plastic 500ml (suggested but it doesnt matter) bottle, make a small hole 3/4 of the way down, put a tube in the hole so the end hits the bottom of the bottle and the other end sticks out, this tube can be made from a discarded biro for instance. then make another "ventilation" hole 1/4 of the way down, put water in so the end of the biro (but not the hole in the bottle) is submerged, put a spliff in the tube, spark up, cover the ventilation and breathe through the top. you know you're doing it right when it bubbles.

its easy to make a bong, i used to be an expert before i brought one but, the problem is making the bowl. as for buying a bong from the net, i brought a vaporizer from www.cannabisheaven.com, and got it within the week

just make one yourself. All you need is plexiglass and a special drill bit to make the holes. Use the bowl and stem from that cheap old bong you want to fix up. Instead of blowing $30 plus shipping, you've got your own glass piece that you can paint however you like. I'm planning to do this myself, so I'll let you know when I'm done.

Like said above, bongs/pipes are not illegal untill they've been used.

Yeah i bough my nice colorchanging glass spoon pipe on the net, came fasy and it was tight as hell but like you said it's a bit expensive.
