Any health effects with mushrooms?

I have a friend who told me the chemical in mushrooms is a pure toxin, and it could damage your heart, liver, and possibly your brain. He is a smart guy, but this sounded kind of whack considering I've read about it on Erowid and couldn't find anything saying that.

Is this true?

Not a word of it.

Of course, there are some mushrooms to which this might apply, but none of them are mushrooms used to trip off of.

Except some of the amanita family. Amanita muscaria is used to trip, and in quantity it can damage your body, and alot of it's relatives ((other amanitas)) are deady poisonous, but absolutely beautiful to look at. ^.^
