Hey guys. I just wanted to say I caught Nanci Griffith and Arlo Guthrie at the Newport Folk Festival last night and what a show it was! He performed Alice's Restaurant (all 18 minutes of it) to mark the 40th anniversary of his being arrested for littering. Listening to Bob Dylan and seeing Arlo have made me want to take a closer look at folk music and I'm going to start to learn more folk on my guitar. Any other Arlo or folk fans wish to share their comments about what the music means to them?

Arlo is very witty, and held his own with P.J. O'Rourke on the Bill Mahr show some years ago.

Coming Into Los Angeles
Words and Music by Arlo Guthrie

Coming in from London
From over the pole
Flying in a big airliner
Chickens flying everywhere around the plane
Could we ever feel much finer?

CHORUS:
Coming into Los Angeles
Bringing in a couple of keys
Don't touch my bags if you please
Mister Customs Man

There's a guy with a ticket to Mexico
No, he couldn't look much stranger
Walking in the hall with his things and all
Smiling, said he was the Lone Ranger

CHORUS

Hip woman walking on a moving floor
Tripping on the escalator
There's a man in the line
And she's blowing his mind
Thinking that he's already made her

CHORUS

Coming in from London
From over the pole
Flying in a big airliner
Chickens flying everywhere around the plane
Could we ever feel much finer?
CHORUS

Yeah, he told the story behind Coming into Los Angeles of the pot bust. Then he broke into it with his son's band, the Mammals.

Duppy Man, Arlo is still pretty active in his touring from what I understand. My hippie aunt and uncle have seen him multiple times.

Luuuuv Alice's Restaurant!!!

I had a fish recently named Arlo, though he was named after a really friendly & funny bagger at Whole Foods (who may well have been named after Arlo Guthrie). It turns out he's a cutie pie too, I just couldn't tell at first (the person, not the fish). Kinda young though, ohwell.

Arlo the fish has since gone on to the great bowl in the sky, but I now have Ar-2 (get it? har har har).

funny, I've been workin on it for my Solo act...Alice's Rest. and City of New Orleans...
good stuff, wish i could've seen them...Love Nancy Griffith, too, most people don't know that she wrote and performed "wind beneath my wings" that Bette Middler made famous, but I had seen Nancy do it many times before...later

Funny you mention that, because Nanci performed "From a Distance," another song that helped Bette's career. Turns out the record label didn't like Nanci's voicce very much, so they kept her version from getting as much exposre. On stage, Nanci said, "Look where I am today, and look at at Bette Middler's career!" Ouch!

I wonder if he will tour GB in the future I would love to catch him live, i've seen Dylan.another great bit of folk history is Fairport Convention
im going to have a look on the web I thought he had packed up touring years ago the Alice's restaurant thing he said years ago he would not perform it again also the master copy was destroyed so it has become a very rare album

saw him a few years ago with his son's band, "xavier" backing at this small old movie theater in vegas (the huntridge)...awesome show! he's still got it...and his son will be carrying on for that family for years to come!
