No it won't work, i think because to root a cutting you have to cut the leaves, just let a few chunks of leaves. If you remove almost all the leaves of a plant, it won't recover. BUT, what you can do is digging out the roots ball in the soil, then rince it with water to remove all the dirt and put it in an hydro set up. But why don't you seed directly in an hydro system ?

i grow dwc and soil...I think you can wash the soil out of the roots and put it in 5" netpot w/hydroton...which is a medium...it will work, but i don't know if the stress will be too much for plant...yield could suffer...hope this helps, later

If you wash gently the roots to remove the soil, the plants will recover. Try not to break one root. Before putting it in hydroton, you could put it in a clone bubbler system hanged with a clotheclip over the bubbling solution, in order to refresh the roots during a few days with light nutes concentration. I've done it yet and it works.
