come on now
other message boards have more advanced features
as partakers of the sacred herb, we should have the cutting edge technology at hand, dont you agree? :)

Wot sorta more advanced features do other forum's have? I don't use any other 1's so the options seem fine to me :D

Ron is in the process of preparing to migrate to the latest version of the vBulletin software. Once that happens, there may be some new features. For practical reasons, many of the features of the current vB package are disabled or restricted, and I would expect these to be the same in the new version. But allow me to point out that it is NOT the features of the software that make the community, it is the posts and the personalities of the individual members. Without that, all the features, bells and whistles in the Universe mean exactly diddly-squat.

So? You can set up polls here for people to vote on, too. Like this one (http://boards.cannabis.com/showthread.php?t=26200), for example.

You mean the CANNABIS.COM homepage? http://www.cannabis.com/
What should it have that's not there?
There are no pull-down menus, no highlighted/floating links, no javascript, etc to maintain compatibility...
Are more glitzy graphics, etc needed? -and why?
Does anything not work properly / inadequately on the homepage?

Everything looks fine to me. There are no broken links or images, and the navigation is easy and intuitive. The layout is perhaps a bit cluttered for my taste, but I've seen far, far worse - and I'm talking about major corporate websites.

not bashing the site, ron. good information and great forums. Just saying, the site does look a little dated compared to most other sites. Not sayin there should be annoying flash animations or pull down menu's, but it looks the same as it always has, and the ads could be presented in a less obtrusive way. besides, alot of the links on the page are actaully just ads for other sites.
Just throwin that out there, no offense intended.

Why do people insist that websites change their appearance periodically? If a layout looks good and works well, why screw with it?

Thank you for the insight - feedback helps us make things better...
The home page may appear "dated" to many folks, since it's mostly all text-based; many sites use a lot of embedded graphics, javascript, and flakey browser-dependent hacks, etc to make edges look rounded, text appear highlighted when mouse pointer is over it, more polished look, etc ... eventually cann.com may be updated with some of those elements, but not until most all folks are on high-speed connections and faster computers.
While on the topic of "dated" ... Google's homepage looks similar in design as to when it started about 7 years ago with minimal graphics and features ... doesn't seem to stop people from visiting.
On a related topic, in a sense, the cann.com home page already changes all the time - the picture of the day updates daily, the cannabis news headlines updates every few hours as do the message board topics shown; the homepage is very dynamic with many embedded elements that update frequently.
I understand your sentiments about the ads ... the way the ads are presented is by design; that isn't always the best thing for visitors, but advertising greatly helps cover costs so it's one of those tradeoffs we have to make to keep cann.com running.
Thank you again for your feedback and comments - it better helps us know what we should consider changing/improving, etc.

Ron, many of the "glitzy graphics" you talk of are now standard on most sites, and are a simple piece of HTML that can be done in a matter of seconds. I know what you mean when you say that this site doesn't need those things, and it doesn't, because content is the most important thing.. but when you already have the content why not then update the aesthetics of the site aswell? These forums have all those "glitzy graphics" because they come as standard with the vBulletin software, right?

Put an mp3 player on it. Every site should have an mp3 player. I mean it's 2005 for gods sake. :p

And why would a page need one? I dont know anyone who doesnt have a player on their computer already. I dont get it(??) I play my tunes and surf all the time.
One thing I have noticed is that the "potprice" info hasnt been updated in months.
And when I click on the 'pic of the day' to see the enlarged picture it is very rarely the same as the one previewed .
But I spend all of about 20 seconds on the homepage each time I log in so it doesnt really matter to me what it looks like or how it functions. But thats just my opinion.
