I just love to watch foreign movies....I wondered if anyone else here does...

One of my favorite is Amelia. The colors in it are really cool if you are stoned...lol the music is pretty nice too.

So I watched this one a few days ago called Carandiru.

OMG it was so sad. It was about this prison in Sao Paulo...
The conditions there were terrible....and they rioted so the cops came in and just started killing people it was really depressing.
Anyone else seen a good foreign movie?

i can sit down and watch foreign movies and enjoy them too, but you must forgive my bad memory, i don't remember any of the names. there is one that i remember, it's a cartoon - the triplets of bellville, it's really cool, trippy too.

I've seen a lot of foreign movies. I started watching a lot from China and Taiwan when I was learning to speak Chinese. Although most are really bad kungfu movies there are quite a few deeper/artistic movies as well. Try a movie called Xiu Xiu The Sent Down Girl. It was directed by Joan Chen and was actually banned in China. It's a pretty deep, sad movie but the cinematography is great.

Another good foreign movie is a Vietnamese one called The Scent of Green Papaya. There's not a whole lot of dialog but what is said is meaningful. Plus, like Xiu Xiu, the cinematography is fantastic. Oh, and the story does have a happy ending.

Foreign movies are good, ive watched a good number of them and have enjoyed most of them, i like the fact that theyre totally different from contemporary hollywood flicks and offer a more natural view in cinematography and story lines also the trippiness they involve in them.

I've always liked good foreign films, but I didn't know If I'd be able to handle subtitles while high. But the other night I smoked a joint and watched this film Pyrokinesis. It's about this woman who can set things on fire with her mind. I enjoyed watching it blazed. The subtitles weren't that big a problem. Run Lola Run, La Femme Nikita, Violent cop and Tampopo are all good. It's too bad I didn't see them stoned!

I liked what the creators of south park had to say "foreign films are just a bunch of gay cowboys eating pudding"
but then again a foreign film to me is from america.

The seven samurai!!!!!!!! ok theres a good one. 1950's japaneese movie about honour, sacrifice, nobility, forgiveness, mercy and kick ass wicked sword fighting...at the point when guns rendered swords virtually obsolete :D

Amores Perros is really graphic.

Oh yeah and the motorcycle diaries is an amazing movie. The boy from Amores Perros is in that, and hes also in Y Tu Mama Tambien. Hes also a major babe. I know his first name is Gael..but I forget the rest.

But yeah Amores Perros is definitly among one of the most graphically fucked up movies I have ever seen.

Hey Blue Cat, I know you're interested in China so another one you may want to check out is the one Ganj mentioned-Beijing Bicycle. It's a pretty accurate depiction of life in a big city in modern China. A couple of other good ones are:

To Live- a great movie about lifes up's and downs. It follows one family from the mid-'40s or so to about the mid '70s. Banned in China because it depicts the ridiculousness of the Mao years.

Qui Ju- Kind of funny movie about one woman's quest for justice after her husband is kicked in the balls. Sorry, its a bad description of a good movie.

Postmen in the Mountains-Interesting father and son story about life in modern rural China.

Oh, when watching Xiu Xiu keep in mind that the time period for this was the mid '70's. A lot is different now.

Now I gotta go and find that City of God movie that everyone is talking about.

American films are foreign to me too although they dont really count! - Downfall is a great German film about the last days of Hitler
Some good british movies are Scum, McVicar, Football Factory, I.D, the Italian Job(original not piss poor remake) Twin Town and Trainspotting, theres loads more great British films and none are like that poncy Love actually and 3 or 4 (im not sure) weddings and a funeral(mine after i watched it)

BlueCat
08-04-2005, 03:49 PM
tee hee I liked Trainspotting... :)

Thanks so much Fengzi.. :D I will go look for those now and put them in my queue.

They should mail out Xiu Xiu this week...I'll comment once I've seen it.

Bus 174 is about the children that live in the streets of Brazil...and the media's hunger for a story...it is really eye opening.

Glad to hear you liked "To Live" Blue Cat. It really is a great movie. It always blows my mind to think that my wife lived through some of that time period and my mother and father in law experienced all of it. In fact, my wife never even met one of her grandfathers because he was a rich landlord and sent to a "re-education" camp shortly before she was born and never heard from again.

There are still a lot of the old style home homes and architechture in China. It's actually pretty surreal beacuse you can go from an ultra modern "Blade-Runner" type city (Shanghai) to an ancient village with cobblestone streets and traditional architechture(Zhou Zhuang) in about 20 minutes. The farther west you go the more traditional the cities are. You'll actually find little villages high up in the mountains which are inhabited by some of China's minority people, similar to the hill tribes of northern Thailand. Below is a picture of a village my wife and I went to on our honeymoon. It could only be reached by a couple mile hike up the mountain through the terraced rice fields. Going there was definitely an awesome experience.

its not really a foreign film but its scottish, its called SWEET SIXTEEN its really good u can download it at www.torrentspy.com heres a review: http://www.bbc.co.uk/films/2002/09/18/sweet_sixteen_2002_review.shtml

"Opening in Greenock, a rundown town near Glasgow, "Sweet Sixteen" follows teenage scally Liam (Compston) as he struggles to prepare for the release of his ex-heroin addict mum from prison.

Desperate to try and build them a proper family home, Liam needs money. And fast. Muscling in on his mum's boyfriend's drug business, Liam and his pal Pinball (Ruane) set themselves up as dealers, displaying an entrepreneurial skill that has little other outlet on Glasgow's unemployment-ridden estates.!"

Luis Buneul, an influential director from Spain, made great films. Sometimes they are shown on cable, and are not to be missed. Many of his best were filmed in Mexico. He started making them in the 1920's, and continued through the late 1970's with That Discreet Object of Desire. He could work with avante garde, was the fouder of surrealism in film, still tell great stories, and more all in the same film.

The German expressionist films, from the 1920's and even before, were a big influence on Buneul - and also worth checking out.

City Of God

This is the most amazing film ive ever seen!

Review (GOT 5STARS) at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/films/2002/12/02/city_of_god_2003_review.shtml

"An intoxicating shot of cinematic adrenaline, "City of God" starts with a desperate chicken escaping slaughter and being chased by a gang of pistol-packing prepubescents.

It's an apt allegory for the frantic fight for survival of the protagonists in this ferocious blast of gangster mayhem.

Rocket (Alexandre Rodrigues) narrates our journey into the slums of Rio de Janeiro, the City of God. A child of the 60s, he witnesses two decades of barbarity, greed, rape and revenge which fuel a catastrophic gang war.

Fear and an instinct for self-preservation keep him on the straight and narrow, but his childhood associate Li'l Zé (Leandro Firmino da Hora) grows into the ghetto's godfather - a ruthless, demented killer who makes Joe Pesci's "GoodFellas" psycho look like Mary Poppins.!"

Here's one that practically NOBODY has even heard of, much less seen - LITTLE MURDERS. I saw it several times in the movies, years ago when it came out, and just bought the DVD. This is one of the craziest New York City films ever made. If you're not from New York, or another big city, you might not get it. The scenes with Donald Sutherland as a hippie minister, performing a wedding ceremony, decribing an acid party, were worth the price of admission, but the movie never made it big because it was a black comedy, written by Jules Feiffer, about random killings and people going crazy. It was directed by Alan Arkin (who also plays a manic Detective in the film), and starred Elliot Gould. Released in 1971.

Don't look at the "scene selections" on the DVD because it gives an important part of the plot away.
