They won't need ferts until 2-3 weeks into growth. If your using a soil that contains ferts already in the mix (which is not good) you may have to wait longer and may even stretch your plants growth. Go to a nursery and see if you can get Promix bx soiless medium. It is the easiest stuff to grow in. Also, if you can find a hydro shop, get some Fox Farm ferts. Get grow big for vegging and tiger bloom for flowering.

Is there a way to tell by looking at the plant if it needs to be fertalized and also can you tell if your over fertalizing?

I read somewhere that Standard Miracle-Gro is okay for flowering, but for veg you want to go with Miracle-Gro tomato food because of the higher N levels. I have hear bad stories about chemical ferts and have had my plants burn the first time growing because of premixed chem ferts in the potting soil (Pirate is right about them). But then again, it may workout fine for you. Try using 1/3-1/2 of the recomended mixture of fertilizer before using the fully recomended dose

miracle grow is crap and leaves a metalic taste in your smoke. First I personaly would use Foxfarm ocean mix to grow with soil or Foxfarm light warrior for soiless. Then use a good organic or food grade fert. Fox farm has some good organic nuets also try checking out Supernatural brand fert and nuets. their web site has alot of info.www.supernaturalbrand.com
