Do you have to have perlight?

I was wondering if you have to have perlight for growth? And are you supposed to shine light if you just planted?

Hey Mstmary. Here,s what i do bro. I just use the potting soil i buy that already has perilite in it. I never add anything to my soil but nutrients. I add bat guano some manure and a little dolomite lime for ph. Keeps it at 7. It does alright for me but i would like to try some fox farm soil one of these days and see how it does but it,s expensive. But; NO you don't HAVE to use perilite but it makes for better dranage; and drainage is inportant. Most potting soils you buy have added perilite in the mix. Happy growing bro!
