i have a plant that was topped and pruned so that it only has 4 major branches. this plant has been flowering for 4 weeks now, and i was wondering, if i cut off one of the branches, would it have any adverse effect on the plant? and would it cause the plant to put more into the other 3 branches?

SOunds like a bad idea... can you tell me why you want to cut it?
Are all 4 branches the same length? What kid of light are you using... 4 weeks is pretty (substantial) deep into the flowering process. I would say, only do it if it is a must.

If you cut off a main branch now in flowering, the shock will be such that by the time the plant recovers, it'll be time to harvest.
Yes, the plant will divert energy into growth but it will be energy diverted to NEW FLOWER growth, NOT the flowers you already have.
Hence, the flowers you have will be already past their prime by the time the new ones show themselves and do anything worthwhile.
Use the veg stage to prepare the plant for flower. Once going into flower, you dont want to shock the plant.
