When it starts playing, hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and see if you can spot any running processes you don't recognize in the Task Manager. Also, go to Start > Run and type msconfig, and click the Startup tab. Look and see what things you are loading on startup that might be the culprit. You can uncheck anything you find that looks out of place, and then click OK. Restart your computer and see if the problem has gone away. if it has, you can run msconfig again and re-check each item one by one, restarting after each one, until you find the one that caused the problem. Also try running a spyware checker such as Lavasoft's Adaware, or Spybot Search & Destroy, since the problem may be related to malware on your system.

That alone won't fix it. The next time you restart it will be there again. You need to use msconfig to stop it from loading in the first place.

The best free virus program is www.trendmicro.com with their free online scan. they'll most likely get it out. second best would be a free downloadable program called Ewido.

I set up a computer in my spare room once. (room we thought was ghosted) It started typing random words out after an hour or so of being hooked up. I did all kinds of stuff to get it to stop typing random things, nothing worked until we took it out of the room. Many strange things happened in that room that made me beleive in ghosts.

will it still store it if a hard boot is done? i remember with win95, anything/everything that came into the puter during that particular session would be wiped with a hard boot...it's not a good thing to do regularly but has gotten me out of probs. haven't had any in so long now (yes, knocking on wood) that i may have been spoiled with the new windows and all the blocks that come with it...whatever we're running now...xp i think.

Randomly appearing characters problem may have been due to the microphone being turned on by default - search Google / tech sites for more details.

Perhaps... but as my nephew found out the hard way, not cleaning out spyware/trojans/viruses, etc can often lead to much worse; free usually isn't free.

In his particular situation ... one day he got home, turned on the computer, saw some weird Windows errors, and it then locked up - most every file on the HD was deleted.

it typed random words...mostly gibberish you couldn't make a sentence out of. Though when you played a cd in that room the sound and bass would go way up on a few songs every time. (one was big pimpin' by jay z) He seemed kind of hostile if you where doing sex type stuff, but if you where smoking out in the room he would be chill. (hostile- things fell off the walls, lightbulbs blow, candles go out, electric flicker) (chill- joints and bowls seemed to last twice as long, total feeling of peace and coolness in that particular room)
I always assumed it was the ghost of a dealer.

It may have something to do with Cosmic Rays (http://boards.cannabis.com/showthread.php?t=24452)....
