Alright, my friend and I had a debate this weekend over some blunts and budweisers. He feels that everything in the world happens by the hand of fate. So you can assume that he also thinks that we, as individuals, are controlled by fate or destiny. He then went on and said that he thinks that fate is inevitable, unchangeable. I thought his views were rather pessimistic because I always try to look on the brighter side of everything. I just looked at him like this  when he was painting this picture of helplessness and apathy.
I, on the other hand, believe in will power; I think that every individual has the power to change anything in his or her life. However, I will not go on a limb and say changing a certain thing in your life will be easy. I just think that people have control of their lives, and self-help is the only help you'll ever receive. But what do I know? I want to know what you think about destiny/fate vs. free will/determinism.

There's no "master plan," I don't think, but your subconscious can definitely cause apparent "accidents" according to what it wants, or even take information that doesn't register on a conscious level and use that to build a situation where your subliminal ideas can be acted out--ie, you see a pretty girl at a cafe and would like to talk to her, but you never get up to greet her. But maybe your subconscious overheard her conversation and retained that information apart from all the other chatter in the place, so without even realizing it, you might know what her plans are for the day--let's say a trip to the mall. Then your subconscious could make you decide you're in the mood for a new CD, so you head to the mall and, gasp, run into this girl. Fate? Destiny? Your brain is god!

"Everything happens for a reason"
To quote the great Adam Carolla.
What the fuck does that mean you goober? (people who think that)
Innocent people are shot and killed for no reason? Had to happen?
People get raped? Had to happen?
Fuck you people who think like that

Well technically everything does happen for a reason, because every action is a reaction to a previous action. Like there's a reason we're at war in Iraq--there's a lot of oil there. It's not a very good reason, but that's the reason anyway.

I wouldn't go as far as to say that fate/desitiny doesn't exist, but I think the definition of it for me is a bit different. I think we existed before we came to earth, and lived in a pre-existance where we picked up certain traits/talents/knowledge, but when we were placed here on earth a veil was placed upon us..
But I think that through expierences some of these certain traits can get picked up, or are real personalities start to shine out, which is why I think some people can be "Destined" to do something, this doesn't mean they had to do it, but rather that they had a great chance of it.
Everyones here for I reason in my opinion. We aren't here to live out a routine lifestyle like a mindless, heartless, robot.. But thats just an opinion =)
