sorry, the title isnt very relevent, but its a great song.

i have a 400w mh/hps and i am keeping it above my seedlings, about 1 metre +/- a few inches. for fear of burning the little sweeties could it be possible to substitute with a 40w desk lamp? if so for how long?

NOPE, get a florescent save the heat and other problems from using to hot a light on seedling and clones. .

you'll stretch those girls like there was no tomorrow. i'm with zandor, start your seedlings with fluorescent, or compact fluorescents. a meter +- a few inches will stretch the hell out of your seedlings.
whereas with fluorescents you can have the lights about an inch from the top of the plant without burning it
