Basically... when you toke regularly the smoke doesn't all go straight to your lungs. It kind of takes its time getting there... so a bunch of smoke ends up just chillin out in your pipe. When you release the carb, it rushes air quickly through the pipe, moving all the smoke into your lungs. You can't effectively get the bud to burn with the carb uncovered, and you can't get all the smoke out of the pipe with the carb covered, so you use a combination of the two. You can shotgun a hit if you take a long hearty hit, then when you release the carb, pull super hard. The smoke will shoot into your lungs and incredible speed, and much coughing will ensue.

does anyone else not see the purpose to put a carb on a glass spoon? it's not that big, not like you're wasting much by not clearing it, and hey not clearing it means more resin build up....the only thing i actually do use the carb for is a scraping hole to get resin out, otherwise i just cover it and hit it.....i just don't see the point unless it has a decent sized chamber to fill up.
Yeah, rushs on pipes are pretty pointless.

yeah unless its like one of those hammer pipes that have a big base on em, but with a glass spoon its a waste of time

Yeah, my spoon hits pretty hard, its def not small though. Not huge, but you'd have a hard time palming it. Even for small spoons though, its nice to not start your next hit with stale smoke.
