How do u tell what kind of bud you got if you dont grow???
what i do is just buy an ounce once a month of the best bud i can find and smoke on it

My dealer doesnt know(grabs 1/4ps daily), and the guy he buys it from(who picks up Ps daily) both dont know the strain/type, just that its primos

i know i got some really good shit right now, but one thing ive always wanted is to know what kind of bud im smoking..........i dont got a cam i'd describe it as light bright green, almost looks like it got snowed on or has icing covering (very thick white crystal cover), It is all 3-10 G sized buds, even the leaves are covered in crystal, no seeds, it smells very strong fruity/skunky, it tastes good, very strong FX - if you smoke too much youll pass right out (the other day i had a few too many hits in row layed down with tunes on and woke up 3 hours later not even relizing i fell alseep)....its soo nice ive spent at least an hour just staring at it on my black table with the lamp right over top of it

i would grow but its not an option in my current situation so how do i tell what kind of weed i got?????how do you tell the difference between indica and sativa???? how do you tell what strain it is??? or if it is a hybird strain or what???? ive tried using smokersguide.com but theres so many slightly different kinds and all so very similar in looks and smells etc. i cant make out which one i have

Unless you are getting it direct from a grower, someone very close to the grower, or a "legit" source like a medical cannabis club there really isn't any way to tell exactly what you've got. A lot of people say they've just gotten some Northern Lights, Haze, Trainwreck ect, but I would bet that in most (certainly not all) cases their dealer is just telling them the name of some good strain he's heard about. I don't know of anyway to determine a specific strain from a picture of a dried bud or even the bud itself. Maybe some expert growers out there might be able to but I would think they are few and far between.

What I, and a lot of people, have found, however, is that you can tell if a strain leans more towards the indica or sativa type depending on the high it produces. Buds that are mostly indica have a more pronounced body stoned type of high, the kind that keeps you on the couch. Sativas have more of an up, brainy high, the kind that can get you seriously wasted but won't put you to sleep. It sounds to me like what you've probably got now is an indica dominant strain. I could be wrong though, it wouldn't be the first time. Anyhow, I hope this helps.

yea good point.

i just judge it by all available observations

smell, look, feel, shape, taste, effects when used, etc.

youd think that using those criteria youd be able to identify the strain/type.

Yeah, only when you get weed from the source, or like one person down the line from it, can you generally be sure of what it is. Not all of us are that lucky.

Well, not all of you. :D

The Scientific Method aint good enough to help tell?
Characterization (Quantification, observation and measurement)
Hypothesis (a theoretical, hypothetical explanation of the observations and measurements)
Prediction (logical deduction from the hypothesis)
Experiment (test of all of the above)
Conclusions

It's close to impossible to tell. Lots of different strains have very similar characteristics. Another reason is that the smell and taste can be altered by the brand of nutrients fed to the plant.

No. You can make some educated guesses based on smell, texture, color, and the size, density and distribution of the hairs, as well as the type of high, but no way can you narrow it down to the exact strain. Sort of gene sequencing, you'll never be able to tell precisely.

have a look at it under a weak 3x magnifier or whatever you can get your hands on, that way you can get a close look at the bud and see what the trichomes(the thc filled glands on the bud)are lookin like. because after all thats what your looking for at the end of the day, good ole thc.
usually i think thats a pretty good indicator, if the buds are nice and crystally, they usually do a good job.

edit: obviously there are alot of other factors that come into it, how they were cured, smell ect, but thats the first thing i look for.

These days, I can't tell what type it is except for the type of high it produces. As many of you older people know, in the past we got Columbian (golds, reds, "commercial" and more), Hawaiians, Thai, etc., and it was usually pretty easy to spot them by look, taste, aroma, etc. There were also types whose origins were hard to distinguish. We once got some red Jamaican lbs., about 1975, that were formed like wheels, smuggled over in gray plastic pails that had the legend "Joint Compound" stenciled on them LOL.

I don't know how much THC was in it, but that old Columbian gold was some sweet tasting, affordable, pleasant stuff. I haven't seen any in the U.S. for over 20 years, but they did have it listed on a menu in an Amsterdam coffee shop about 10 years ago - very $$$.

The dealers I buy from almost all the time know what their weed is called.

And sometimes I can identify it myself.

Just wanted to thank you for posting this. I've never known what kind of weed I smoke (didn't know the difference between indica and sative tillI came here :)) Reading your post makes sense though, since sometimes I just feel like vegetating, and other times I actually will get up and do stuff. I'd have to say that according to your description the indica is the stuff I really like.

Thanks again...it's great to get good info from experienced folks. :)
