dont no where you heard that but to much acidity in soil will just kill it
5 is too low and 8 is too high of ph
anywhere in between should be ok
shoot for 6

where did ya hear that high acidity created more females?

but if that were the case my high alkaline soil along with the water (9.0) would mean i get a good share of f's from my seed...i do not. never have after 20-some years living in the desert. it's the same as everywhere i've lived...slightly more than 50% female. now i do use a potting soil mix but it's ph-neutral. periodically i have to use ph-down (available online or any good nursery/landscape store) in the water unless i pre-treat the soil in the spring.

another good reason to test BOTH the water and the soil...rain too. the rain in the sw can be very acidic, especially during fire season, like now. it has been as low as 5.0!

Hey Firsttimefarmer

It's not the soil alkalinity that determines gender it's the genetics. In all the experiments I have done there is only one way to create female plants. Get a large tray of rotting fruit put a fan behind it and let it blow at the plants as they grow,(from seed). Add more fruit as the pile shrinks to a rotting mass of fur. I really don't know what chemical processes are at work here but I know it works. The first time I did it I got eighteen out of eighteen female plants which anyone will tell you should be impossible. With subsequent cuttings I ended up with seventy-four ounces, some buds as long as two and a half feet.

My advice is use clones and don't worry about gender.

excellent advice and an interesting experiment...have to try it next time we start a seed batch (outdoors tho...sounds a bit messy/stinky for inside). thanks!
