Why do you think we feel the need to pay to be entertained what has happened to us when I was a child we made games up and spent hours playing them...not now it has to be structured play ???

dont know dude im with you though when i was a kid i was happy just to take a walk in the woods or sit at the river or beach and watch the sunset or fish or hunt it takes a freakin crow bar to pry that kid of mine away from the phone and his play station and whats worse kids under 16 now cant hardly get a job any more no one will let a kid cut thier grass or shovel thier driveway any more for fear of a law suit all these enterainment distractions deff. are not doing kids any good

True when i was a kid it was even different then than it is now. There was atari in the way of computer games back then.I was always outside as a kid playing and skateboarding, rollerskating, bikes always digging holes in the yard and filling them with water and tadpoles then trying to cover it up so my mum didnt see.I liked collecting bugs lol like spitfires, spiders, ants and grasshoppers and stuff. Also there was a creek right behind my house and trees so we used to make tarzan swings and stuff i wish i was a kid again lol.Im always trying to get my son doing something other than playstation he is not interested usually but when my step daughter comes on weekends she loves to do other things with me rather than sit inside and play computer games.I got them outside last weekend with a huge piece of cardboard and made them collect sticks and leaves and all bush stuff then i told them to make a bush scenery lol my son hated doing it but my step daughter loved doing it.I told them that no games can go on until they finish lol it took them all day off and on but in the end they were proud that they made something like that because they did it themselves.I even get the kids sanding sometimes lol or helping me cookthey love when u ask for there help they feel important.

I get you, duppy. I was wondering a while back, when do dandelions stop being flowers and become weeds? When you're little you pick them for your mom, when you're older you spray them with weed killer. I leave them alone, what's wrong with a little yellow flower?

I remember going down to the river and catching crawfish. Put them in a rock arena and have them fight. catching catfish like nobodys business. Even catching some pigeons now and then under the bridge because there were thousands of them. Bicycles and no helments and many wipeouts. When we played GI joe we were serious lmao.
Yup I remember being knee deep in dandelions popping heads off :)

most so called weeds that inhabit or gardens today were useful years ago like the lowly dandelion is great to eat from the flower head to the root which can be dried and crushed makes a coffee substitute

yea I know what you mean lily its just a shame the kids don't do it when I lived in the country my garden backed onto about 200 acres of wood and fields my 2 lads came to stay and asked me if they could go out, they went to the corner and just stood at that time they were 9 and 11 I suggested they go and play in the fields and the woods they went out into the field and leaned against a fence post again i went out and said why don't you go and explore the woods and stuff their reply WHY would we want to look in woods that boring
I know I posted this before but this thread reminded me of it
- for those of us who were kids back then :)
Growing up in Ireland
I'm talking about Hide and Seek in the park, The shop down the road, Hopscotch, Donkey, skipping, handstands, stuck in the mud, football with an old can, Dandy, Beano, Twinkle and Roly Poly, Hula Hoops, Jumping the stream, building a swing from a tyre and a piece of rope tied to a tree, (If you live in Dublin the lampost), building tree-houses, climbing up onto roofs. Tennis on the street, the smell of the sun and fresh cut grass.
Hubba Bubba bubble gum and 2p Flogs, macaroon bars and woppas, 3p Refreshers and wham bars, superhero chewing gum, golf ball chewing gums and liquorice whips, desperate dan and roy of the rovers, sherbit dips and Mr. freezes, marathon bars and everlasting gobstoppers. An ice cream cone on a warm summer night from the van that plays a tune chocolate or vanilla or strawberry or maybe neopolitan
Wait ... Watching Saturday Morning cartoons ... short commercials, Battle of the Planets, Road Runner, He-Man, Swapshop, and Why Don't You?, Transformers, How do you do?, Bosco(SANDY), Forty-coats, the Littlest Hobo and Lassie, Chucklevision, The Muppet Show, MacGyver, Scarecrow and Mrs King, Little House on the Prairie and Highway to Heaven, or staying up for Knight Rider and Magnum PI.
When around the corner seemed far away and going into town seemed like going somewhere.
A million midget bites, sticky fingers and mud all over you, knee-pads on your jeans, Cops and Robbers, Rounders, tip the Can, Queenie-I-O, climbing trees, spin the bottle, building igloos out of snow banks, walking to school, no matter what the weather, running till you were out of breath. Laughing so hard that your stomach hurt, Jumping on the bed. Pillow fights, Spinning around, getting dizzy and falling down was cause for giggles, Being tired from playing... Remember that?
The worst embarrassment was being picked last for a team.
Water balloons were the ultimate weapon
Football cards in the spokes transformed any bike into a motorcycle.
And don't forget the Marietta sandwiches we'd make by buttering a cupla Marietta biscuits and stickin' them together. And that quare oul mixture made in a tall glass with HB ice cream and Taylor Keith Red Lemonade.
I'm not finished just yet...
Eating raw jelly, orange squash ice pops
Remember when ... There were two types of sneakers - girls and boys and Dunlop Green Flash and the only time you wore them at school, was for "P.E.", Gola football boots.
It wasn't odd to have two or three "best" friends, when nobody owned a pure bred dog, when 25p was decent pocket money, when you'd reach i nto a muddy gutter for a penny, when nearly everyone's mum was at home when the kids got there, when it was considered a great privilege to be taken out to dinner at a real restaurant with your parents
When any parent could discipline any kid or use him to carry groceries and nobody, not even the kid, thought a thing of it.
When being sent to the head's office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited a misbehaving student at home. Basically, we were in fear for our lives but it wasn't because of muggings, drugs, gangs, etc. Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat! and some of us are still afraid of them!!!
Remember when....
Decisions were made by going "eeny-meeny-miney-mo." Mistakes were corrected by simply exclaiming, "do over!"
"Race issue" meant arguing about who ran the fastest. Money issues were handled by whoever was the banker in "Monopoly", the game of life and connect four, atari 2600's and commadore 64's. The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was germs. It was unbelievable that Red rover wasn't an Olympic event...
Having a weapon in school, meant being caught with a biro barrel pea shooter or an elastic band. Scrapes and bruises were kissed and made better, Taking drugs meant orange-flavoured chewable vitamins, Ice cream was considered a basic food group.
Getting a foot of snow was a dream come true.. Abilities were discovered because of a "double dare" Older siblings were the worst tormentors, but also the fiercest protectors
If you can remember most or all of these, then you have LIVED!!!!

No, the world was never perfect but there was a time when it was a lot simpler. Even 20 years ago, things were alot different. Things that we grew up doing on a daily basis are completely different than now. You may not believe it, but it is true.

Things that we grew up doing on a daily basis are completely different than now. You may not believe it, but it is true. But because we exist in the present we can only know what has happened, not what will happen. We use our knowledge of the past as a frame of reference of how bad things are now, but as we can't see the future and only have evidence of the past we will inevitably believe our time to be the worst. What you can't see or feel can't hurt you, right? We can only feel the now so the now is the most real to us.
