This is the MAX space I can use for a closet cabinet grow:
4ft high, 2.5 feet wide, 2 feet deep
My plan is to grow a single flowering plant from seed in that area with either 250W HPS + 80W CFL's, or 400W total CFL (or something you can recommend?). Strain will either be Northern Lights or Low Rider. I could use some advice on what's an ideal cabinet size for my area. Let me know if I'm on crack with this idea. :o

sorry but what is your question?
you are looking for an ideal cabinet size?
if your area is 4 X 2.5 X 2,....is that not your cabinet size?
Or are you looking to place a cabinet in that space?

I like a challenge.
1. Are you good with hand tools and electricity?
2. Are you comfortable working around electricity?
2. Are you going to build this or do you already have it?

Hardon: My questions is how big of a cabinet, or should I say how small, do I need for one flowering plant + lights, etc. I will be replacing a dresser and that's the space I have to work with.
Zandor:
1. Hand tools, sorta. Elec, yes.
2. Yes
3. This will be built

Well it seems if you have that much space, well then you oughta build something that will take up that much space.
Actually sounds like a perfect space to grow one plant.
With the 4 ft. height though, be prepared to tie her down and bend her over and over.
Also, you might wanna grow 3 to increase the odds of you getting a female.
You got the grow container which will be how tall?
You have the light hanging which will take up how much height?
HOw much room does that leave you for veg and flower?
Maybe 2.5 feet?
Thats not a lot, but a low grow spread out and bent might be the best bet. When flower time comes around they WILL double in height.
Make sure you have indica dominant strain!!!
Finally, your 250W HPS will be enuff for this grow space. But plan on good ventilation with such a low height.
Yes, you can do it.

Give me until midweek and then we can talk again I'll draw something up for you. You are not like growing in your parents home and want to hide this or something are you?
I assume odor control is also in issue right?

LOL....
Make sure he is not 'pennyless at the moment' either before you draw plans :)

true...what is your budget for this project may we ask?

I do understand that height will be a concern and I will definitely be doing some tying down. I'm picking NL which is indica dominant and also has low odor.
I am growing at home with the rents. They know I smoke and don't care as long as they don't see it or smell it. *tangent* I planted a bud seed in my mom's indoor garden when I was in 7th grade and they made me flush it 2 weeks later when they found out, maybe this is my destiny, lol. But really, my main concern is odor as they are never in my room.
The budget for building just the cabinet is a bottle of Jim Beam. GF's dad is a handyman and bartered to build it for us, hah. That really only leaves me to buy the 250W HPS (http://www.insidesun.com/index.php?action=item&id=747&prevaction=category&previd=2&prevstart=0 perhaps this?), fans, etc. My project budget is spending as little as possible but still have everything I need.
I'll be grateful if you can draw up some plans as I know yours will be better than mine, judging by experience. :)

NL has a "low odor"? That is just not true. The rest of your plan however is right on target. With good ventilation you can minimize the smell.

All right I'll do it, but you need to take pictures for me....deal?

Don't spend any money or buy any lights yet

yeskaa: Yes, most likely two or three 55W full spectrum CFL's.
keywestcathy: Most of the threads that i've come across have said that *shrugs*
Zandor: Deal. No money has been spent yet. :)

Might have to rush this growbox design a little if you don't mind. GF's dad is on a week vacation from work and I found out he already started gluing planks for it yesterday. Going up there today to help out.

sorry the last week of chemo is a little harder on me then I thought. I do have a hand drawn plan but I have not had a chance to put it to auto-cad yet. Either way I'll finish up and get it to you ASAP.

Wow, I didn't know you were going to get that involved in the design :)
Think maybe you can send me a rough sketch of what you have done by hand by email? axeeonn @ yahoo. com is my email. Just want to check if the basic design is on par with what my gf's dad has done so far.
Hope you feel better with your treatments. Don't meant to put any extra pressure on you!

I'll scan it in and email it to you when I get back. Today should be my last day going every day so after I rest up a bit I should be fine.

The box has been built. It is 5x2x2 and was made out of plank boards glued together, cut, nailed, then will be sanded and varnished. It will be light sealed from the inside and then lined with mylar. The front panel was cut horizontally in half and the top became the door to keep it small. Looks damn good for free shit so far!
Awaiting lights, odor control, and duct fan to complete. Pics were taken by a digital camcorder and thus a bit crappy.

Ok now you need to line the inside with 3/8" roof insulation sheet foam they have one that is white backing with a silver front. Install it on the inside of your box and use gray tape to seal the corners and edges. You can put your Mylar over the form. This will help to seal in your odor and stop light leaks as well as keep bugs out.

Is the foam necessary? The inside will be air sealed with silicone and putty where the planks have gaps. No problems if you still recommend it.
Zandor

Well the foam is only about 5 bucks a sheet. It will provide a seal for the cracks and is an easy way to enclose a room or box and control all the corners and cracks it's you choice. No it's not required. I just fine in closets and small cabinets it works very well.

Bought 4" duct fan and 2mil roll of mylar today at local store. Will be installing in the cabinet tomorrow.

Here are the pics of the fan going in. Notice the use of materials already lying around the house (dryer hose, window screen, and sink disposer cap). Goes nicely with the free wood taken from pallets. Hole was cut on the bottom left side to accommodate my closet. Urerthane coating was applied after pics and further sanded down to feel like a baby's bottom.
All that is left to really do is the top vent and odor control. The inside will then be lined (found some stuff in garage that will work like the foam) to look more flush and then topped with mylar. Going to install brass hindges on door, too.
What do you guys think so far?

To seal light leaks around hinges on doors you can staple pond liner in strips on the door and the sidewall. Make it protrude a little inside like a U and that will stop the light leak from side door cracks.
