Hey, I was just wondering if there are any previous americans on here that have moved to another country (or canada). I wanted to know how the whole transition feels, do you fit in well? have you made lots of friends? Ive thought alot about moving to Vancouver after im out of the army, heard its really nice and the closest thing to amsterdam. Id like to move there (amster.) but it would probably be hard to live a life with everyone speaking dutch and your speaking english.

I am considering moving as well, the no tolerance attitude here is getting tighter and our freedoms are dissappearing more and more every day. I don't see it getting better so I am also curious about transition and how well Americans are accepted and fit in.

Oh yea, I forgot to also add, how hard is it to find a good job?

I moved to China for a little more than a year back in '96. That was total and complete culture shock. Did I fit in? Depends on what you mean. I was white, about 50lbs heavier and 6" taller than everyone around me, so, I stuck out like a sore thumb. After a couple of months or so I'd be down in the markets arguing with some old lady about the price of bean sprouts just like everyone else. I did make a lot of friends, and my wife, there who I still keep in touch with. The strangest thing was the reverse culture shock when I came back. I actually had to drive to get places, couldn't just walk out the from door and buy breakfast from some street vendor, and for the amount of money it takes to buy a Subway sandwhich here I could have a feast in a decent resturaunt there. I was happy to be back home but it just felt weird.

That being said, I think going to Canada, isn't going to be too much of a culture shock for you. Maybe Quebec but certainly not Vancouver. Probably no more than the shock I had moving from Florida to California back when I was a kid.

As far as getting a job is concerned it the same story everywhere. What are your skills and are they in demand?

I would never move out of this country. But i would like to visit another country.I went to fiji for about 5 weeks when i was a teen i fit in very well with the locals they were beautiful and they like they kava lol.Fijians shine with happiness even though they have nothing. If i had to move overseas it would be to a place like that.

I moved to Israel for a year and a half. It was difficult to learn Hebrew, especially because all Israelis wanted to practice their English with me. There are also huge cultural differences, but less so because of the common religious background. The most difficult transition was actually moving back to the states. In both situations it took about 6 months to adjust and feel comfortable. Now I go back and forth between the two countries. have fun and best of luck. as we say in hebrew, "nesiah tovah" or good travels.
