I have only grown once so any input from veterans is welcomed.

I topped my plants at the 4th node, all except one. I topped it at the 3rd node on accident. It was the smaller plant all through Vegetative growth but once I started to flower it grew faster than the ones I topped at the 4th node and in a week 1/2 is the largest plant I have.

I do not know if this is common but thought I would share this.

topping will cause a growth spurt after it gets through the initial shock, also, if you were just beginning to flower, that would mean more height growth...one of my plants doubled in height when i topped it...i would say that's definitely typical, your buds will be smaller but more plentiful all over the plant

Third node is okay as far as I know. That's where I usually top. I like the plant to be split as low as possible to create a lower center of gravity.

I plan on transplanting a month old outside plant to a larger pot. How long after I transplant can I top it? I dont want to create excessive shock or stress.

A month will put the plant past the 3rd, 4th and 5th node. You want to top at one of those nodes and waiting a month is to long.
