I have a question for all you old timers. How was the bud through out the 60s, 70s and 80s. Was it as potent as some of the bud today? From what i know the bud in teh 60s and 70s was all pretty much just plain weed. No nugs or very high potent weed with lots of crystals. Is this true?

Don't know about the 60's and 70's but I started smoking back in '82. Back then we did just get pretty much plain old bud and it was either brown or green. I can't ever remember hearing about any different strains like you do now.
It wasn't until the early-mid '90s that I started seeing really good bud on a regular basis. I can remember, however, getting a bag of really awesome indica in '86. Good enough that I clearly remember it almost 20 years later.

I cant speak personally about the 60's-70's for potency. It is a fact though that bud has doubled in potency since then. A result of breeding and a better understanding of the plants nutrient needs.
I see kids these days smokin shit that is dankier than anything I got my paws on at their age. Its getting better with time. Eventually itll max out .

I know an ol hippy that smoked in the late 60's and 70's, he says over all, the bud has gotten alot better, but you could still occasionally find some that was pretty much as strong as the really good stuff is today. He would tell me these stories about this dealer/friend of his that everybody called wildman, (or animal, somthing like that) who would occassionally bring big sticky donkey dick sized buds over. So if you had the right connections back then, you could still get good shit.
I think the main reason most of the weed we have today is so potent because alot more people know how to grow good bud today than they did back then. Back then it was mostly a bunch of amatures lookin for a quick buck. Now its become a competitive buissiness, handled mostly by people who know their shit. Not to mention, even amatures these days have alot more of resources for learning how to grow bud than they would have had in the past.

smoked my first jay in 79' & for me it all depends on who you know as to how good weed is.I rember real good buds like x-mas tree & chocolate thai, then a few years of dirt press weed.
I really think it is a matter of what they are passing to ya less you grow then it bout what seed you bought

Between '78 and '86 I was so blessed to have friends introduce me to (and keep me well supplied with) Maui Wowie, Afghani Gold, Columbian Gold, Tai Stick, Turkish hash, and of course all the swag that always is around. We used to take the really primo stuff for granted. How stupid were we??????????!!!!!!!!!?????????
The really great stuff back then was as good as anything out there these days. But that wasn't the norm. I imagine most folks today make do with less than the best, just as most folks did "back in the day".
I wouldn't necessarily want to relive the days of my youth, but I sure wish I could transport some of that fantastic herb to the present. :D

I started smoking in 1977 -- you could still get Panama Red, Acapulco Gold, and real Thai sticks, as well as big bricks of blonde and black hash. And I remember in the early eighties getting big Hawaiian stalks. It's hard to compare potency now, but I do remember getting so stoned it would take me hours just to remember what I was going to do.
I think pot today is stronger, but I've build up quite a resistance over 25 years of smoking. There was definately good shit back then though -- wish I saved some seeds so I could bring some of those strains back.

i asked my mom this question.. she wasnt smoking in the 60s but mostly the late 70s and through the 80s.. she said that the only reason she would classify old time weed better is that you got more and sometimes it was laced with hallucinagins.. or however the fuck you spell that.. hallucinating off of a bag would kick ass. i envy her.

I was gonna mention Acapulco Gold. I've never smoked it and I don't really know shit about it, I'm only 22. But when I've spoke with older growers/smokers from the 70's, they all mentioned Acapulco Gold and how strong it was; I've read about it in various books too, it said that just one joint would put four men on their backs.

Howdy GTC,
Yup,AG,is/was dang good,as well as the other classic strains, and I say that most could hold their own against alot of these new-fangled strains. I miss the weed of the '70's,I started toking in '73 and had some of the best smoke then and very little like it,since. Yup...I miss the '70's and the smoke we had back then..my intro to modern strains, was when I grew out some of the test beans that led to the developement of Cindy-99..that smoke was sheer ambrosia..I can only imagine what the finished strain,C-99,is like.
Have a good one !

new fangled -- lol
Acapulco Gold was this bright yellow pot pot. It was extremely potent -- at leasst for it's day. But so were the other classic brands. Unlickily, I only saw these specialties a few times before they suddenly disappeared and became unavailable, but it sure was a great intro to smoking 101
Hey? Anyone preserve any of those old seeds? If you did, clone me good buddy ...

P.S. My dad caught me smoking in the basement and flushed the last 1/2 oz of Acapulco Gold I ever saw. That was just before they they sent me off to boarding school.

Most U.K. people I know in the 70's smoked solid. It was superior to the soapbar crap you get now as it was imported from Holland. Went there to work in the late 70's, and viewed "bush" with great suspicion until I tried some. The high was different to skunk, though no less potent. Resin was easier to transport.

in the midwest, it was usually just commercial mex (green and red celophane-wrapped kilo's) but decent enough to sell for around 15-20/oz, 100 or so/lb. once in a while a friend's brother or someone would send a package from oversea's and we'd have some most awesome nam or cambodian for a while...or thai sticks. even more rare we'd get panama red or jamaican but usually columbian was always around (red and gold) and fairly reasonable at 4-600/lb.
to compare the different era's is hard but i'd say there is much more decent weed around now while top quality remains hit or miss on the open market...always around if ya grow tho. prices are pretty much the same when inflation is considered, maybe even cheaper now for some. remember, back then minimum wage was 1.15-1.25/hr.
and by "decent" i'm talking about the b grades...between mediocre and primo/top quality.

in the UK there was a fair choice we had the old fav. paki-black, red & gold seal, Leb Nepalese.
I started in '68, there was sufficient good reefer to keep you pretty spaced. Also a lot of hash in those days. But there was something about it back then, I think because mainly sativa was available. You'd get your mind going pretty good without the physical weighing down indica seems to induce.
But I take the phenomenon of overstimulation into account. Back then, there was little super-weed to be had, you were satisfied with what was around because you didn't know any better. If we'd had the kind of stuff that's available today, we'd probably have smoked less and enjoyed it as much.
Make any sense?
