View Full Version : I F**CKING HATE MATH

Well, British Columba high schools focus WAY too much on Math. I'm in Grade 11 but still stuck in Math 10 (used to skip quite a bit), and math is the only class I've ever had any trouble with. The Math 10 classes in our school have a 85% fail rate, and this is not an exaggeration.

This means about 25 of the 30 kids in each class fails, and the teacher's still refuse to rethink the way they teach. The math they are teaching is much too advanced for anyone who does not think mathematically, and for those of us who want to go into university there is no choice but to take math until Grade 11.

Moreover, when I ask the teacher for help, their answer sounds like this;

"Its so easy! All you have to do is take the SEFJKINDKLNSJNENDDJJKDJ and divide that by OLDSIOEWOKLSMSIENRELKSD and factor that to UEEDKDKSLHNSHNDNJS! See, its so simple!"

Yes well this is just me venting basically, but are there any classes my fellow board members hated with a passion or disagreed with the way the class was taught?

McCauley Caulkin hated math too, but math is trippy, you should watch that movie "Pi" (from the same director as reqiuem for a dream) its about how everything in the universe cam be solved with a mathematical equation, so you could basically predict future events if you could find the mathematical solution for it (the guy in the movie tries to figure out the stock market) its pretty wicked

Math, is'nt my strong point, but I pull a 75-85 every term and get by. Get a private tutor (then learn how to spell tutor), or explain to the teacher that you just don't get it. Also, most importantly-Don't Skip Your Classes! If you want to learn it anyway. I skip options or Art sometimes, but not my core subjects.

Right now I am working on rational expressions and algebra. Geometry I don't mind because I find it more applicable, but rational expressions drive me up the wall. I have high 90s in every other class except math, so it REALLY drives me ballistic.

Why couldn't I just let HER be the tutor? Lol actually we first met in English class in Grade 10, and by the second term both of our marks were abysmal because we kept sneaking off to the library to fool around. We've never had a class together since then, and we both agree that that is pretty much a good thing in the end.

Hmm, your favorite subject is English isn't it?
No, but close. English is the class I get the highest marks in. My favourite class is either Acting or History.

I used to not mind math, but I have to take too many fucking math coarses for my major at college. They aren't the easy ones either, Calc, Calc II, Discrete Math, Linear Algebra, and Statistics. If I took Calc III I could be a math minor, but fuck that. Too much theoretical thinking, I can dig on physics, its applied math, but strict mathematics is the worst.

Yeah, I have a 99.2 in English right now and so much of the shit I hand in was written while I was baked out of my fucking gourd. Same with Socials (which is just our name for History/Geography), I can't wait for History 12 next year.

I'm also the senior male actor in my school right now, so that means I help organize and even help teach a Drama 9/10 class.

Wow, I'm sorry, I write WAY too much while baked.

I fuckin hate math. When i was in the states all they taught me was algebra and i understood the easy stuff but fuck me i suck at math. I never did my homework either lol which wasn't a good idea but i just hate doing homework. I think i just passed with a D or something. When i came back to England and was in my math class they were teaching all this stuff i didn't know that wasn't algebra so i was useless. So i have to take my math gcse at college next year and i'm really dreading it but i'll just have to get through it somehow. Math = worst subject ever. Sure, you need basic math in everyday life but all that other crap, yea rite.

Stedric,
If I may add my two cents worth... I am no math whiz myself so I can totally empathize with your situation. But I work as a social studies teacher so if you don't mind, i would like to make some suggestions...
I know you know this, but math is a peculiar subject, in that, since it is a language, like music, the key to at least passing math, lies in doing the work daily (attending class) and doing the homework every day. It is not like other subjects where you can let things slide a little and get caught up. Also, having a teacher you can relate to and who can relate the subject to every day life for you is important. You might check out an awesome math tutoring website called purplemath.com It really helped me out and like i said, i am an idiot when it comes to math...(come to think of it, i am an idiot in a lot of other things too).
good luck. oh yeah, whatever happened with that Olan dude that was trying to break into your house?
take care...

Languages 'Irish' and 'French', we did 'French' in primary school, it was compulsory in secondary school for 5 years and my third level course had a unit of 'French', that was 2 more years.

That was 14 years of crap that I had to struggle with!

I hate foreign languages.

Everyone else should learn English, not at all politically correct but that's how I feel.

By 2012 half the worlds population will have learned the English language, it is the Corporate language of the world.

As for Maths, one of my favourite, some things where better at and others we excel at.

ya, i feel you. i liked geometry too, but algebra is ok if you give it a chance. rational expressions kinda suck, but are mainly just factoring problems, so just beef up on your factoring skills and you'll get it. i had to do that last semester. next semester i have to take pre-calcus or trigg....ugh. i am kinda worried about that, but i know if i apply myself i'll do fine. good luck, sedric, and pull that grade up and you'll have some good grades!

Mathematics can be difficult.

If the problem is with your teachers, then a good tutor would help.

Analytical skills are developed on the left side of the brain. If the right side of your brain is dominant, then you may never be good at math.

Left side dominance: Logical, sequential, symbolic, reality based thinking : example scientists
Right side dominance: Intuitive, randon, concrete, fantasy based thinking : example artists

85% fail rate? That's fucking harsh man!

I suck at math, I believe only in the power of the cram session (not to be confused with jam session).

As for the idea about math being a language, I can see that. But what if you're also terrible at retaining information about a new language? I know I am, I dragged my ass through my last year of French like a dog with worms.

No offense man, but that theory was proven to be mostly bullshit along time ago. Your brain IS divided into different sections based on scientific or artistic thinking, but they aren't mutually exclusive at all.

Do anything you can to ace it master it....

Im 42 years old and I believe life is a big ass struggle for me cause I just didnt have the math skills in reference to the work world....

I just have two work three times as hard and be a good doggie...

It seems the math heads and high science/computer people are able to write their own ticket....do a bare minimum of work and get paid the most...

I dunno Stedric but from what I see of you, you are more of a creative artistic type what with the school play and all...your probably very popular at school with the girls and all...I was like that too and had a lot of dreams of being a writer or in TV production.....I went to college for it...but a fter a few years of not making alot of money I turned to the conventional work world and found myself a t a loss in technical terms.....I caught up a little then the wife and kids came along and it just gets harder to work, hustle and go to night school...it really sucks especially for a stoner who looks for a little pleasure in life...

Just wish I woulda squared all that shit away years ago when I was a free agent....

I realize you may not make the association/correlation that is just my opinion..

Ahh shit, y'know what Sted? from what I hear of you you are destined for some greatness anyway.... :D

Yeah but I understand his points...

If you have the math skills it opens certain doors in your college options...

Jobs like actuaries where well skilled mathematics types get the red carpet treatment cause they have a hardcore skill, but to the actuary, its probably as easy as going to the bathroom....

Yeah then Ive heard the stories like..Oh well he may be a genius but he cant navigate his way through a social situation or the fucking door, for that matter......

Its very hard because I think the school systems are placing more emphasis on math these days..cause the States cant compete with the world..I mean these young students coming out of China and India are so damn well educated we over here in the States gotta catch up....
