Realistically, how long will it be before marijuana is legalized (or decriminalized.....or whatever it takes so that you can grow and smoke it in your own house)?

I'll stick to my guns and say never.
I'd say the fight for marijuana legalisation in both the US and UK is very much a lost cause. For every one stoner that wants to get high in peace, there are 10 angry, mothers/politicians/paranoid androids that vouch for political correctness above the undeniable truth that weed is relatively harmless.
At the very least, not in our lifetime. There would need to be some serious bend in society for it to be considered.

It's basically like Prohibition in the .... twenties?? How long did that last? I bet weed's prohibition will last a little longer than that.

It already has.
but I'm hopefull for here in Canada. we've legalized medicinal weed for any chronic illness for which conventional medications cannot relieve the suffering. I think if we really work, keep the conservatives out (not saying they're all bad, just conservative), and have a more liberal government in our neighbore America, it could eventually happen.
Lets just remember guys, you have to continue to fight till the outcry can't be ignored. History has had situations like this which seemed impossible too, but people continued fighting and eventually won. Example: womens right to vote, resurgence of democracy, legalization of birth control.can't you friggin believe that, birth control was ILLEGAL till 1969! but people fought for those things and got it.

Court Rules Against Pot for Sick People
Federal authorities may prosecute sick people whose doctors prescribe marijuana to ease pain, the Supreme Court ruled Monday, concluding that state laws don't protect users from a federal ban on the drug. ........this was in the header of my news home page....just cuz a state law may approve of a sick med user that doesnt mean the federal government is gonna put up with it....i think its b.s that a state law can pass but yet the feds are gonna say .." well fuck that law bust them anyway "
